    A gyro copter has no motor attached to the rotor blades. The blades are free spinning. The gyro copter is normally propelled forwards by a tow rope or by a standard aircraft engine/propeller arrangement. As the gyro copter moves forward, the moving air flows upwards thru the rotor blades causing the blades to spin. As the blades spin, they create the lift necessary for flight. This gyro copter has no motor. It is being towed by a car, the forward speed causes the blades to spin.

    The amazing thing about John Dickenson's 1963 invention, the Pendulum Weight Shift Control System is that it can be used for any wing configuration. This brings it full circle, John was working on auto-gyros before he invented the Modern Hang Glider.

    A bit like a 'very special' windmill working at an extreme angle of yaw. Yes, the airflow is wonky, asymmetrical, and counter-intuitive for some, but it does work. They are still used for gyro training, & were used in anger during WW2 - see Focke-Achgelis Fa 330 on Wikipedia and KZread. The 'windmill' does need to be carefully designed and built for this to work. It was the crowning achievement of rotorcraft pioneer Juan de la Cierva. See also 'boom trainer' gyro.

    Looks like it has a pretty slow speed before it autorotates effectively (the guy isn't running very fast before he manages lift-off using a tow line), but is there any footage of a gyrocopter like this taking off from a slope without a tow? If it works well enough, it also seems like it should be more popular. (Instead of seeing just this one bit of old video.) Or does it just not offer much if any real advantage over fabric or plastic airfoil hangliders?)

    @pixelsilva Pranked? No, why. The spoken text on the video explicitly says the gyro glider is towed on the cable by the car to lift it. Once the pilot releases the tow cable, he starts descending and lands. And it's not a helicopter, it's an autogyro, an aircraft which has a totally different operation principle and just looks similar.

  • @mastersduhgree
    @mastersduhgree12 жыл бұрын

    So it would appear that the (extra)momentum that the car provides at takeoff(going faster than the guy can run once lift is achieved)is what actually provides the speed for the rotor to give the gyro flight time then...Is this correct anyone? As there is no engine to provide that much momentum for lift?

    🔴 What Is Islam? ⚠️ 🔴 Islam is not just another religion. 🔵 It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham. 🔴 Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God. 🔵 It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone. 🔴 It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine. 🌍 The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as: 📖 { “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4)[4] 📚 🔴 Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus. 🔵 Rather it’s going back to the original teachings of Jesus and obeying him.

    He's being towed. Gyrocopters have no motor driving the rotor; the rotor is driven by the air passing through it. Here the tow rope takes the place of thrust from the propeller in a normal gyrocopter. This is from the 1980s; it was a cool stunt but a very inefficient way to build a hang glider.

    I am guessing the empty weight is around 30KG. It looks like the blades are around 4m. Here is a great article discussing the design of gyro wings. www.buildagyrocopter.com/designing-gyrocopter-rotor-blades/ Note how they say you don't want to exceed 8.8 kg/m2 disc loading. At 165KG the Hoppi-Copter had a rotor diameter of 4.9m and a disk loading of 8.8 kg/m2 according to this Wikipedia article. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoppi-Copter I think this an interesting design and wish I knew more about it too!

  • @nameberry220

    @nameberry220

    4 жыл бұрын

    I am very interested in hearing any discussion on this topic. I believe one of the first challenges for a weight shift gyro will be that the controls are not intuitive. Because of the way forces interact with a gyro if you weight shift to the right/pull down the right gyro wing - it'll send the nose up. This will happen in all directions that you weight shift> All gyroplanes/gyrocopters take this effect into account when designing their controls and the controls are offset 90 degrees.

  • @georgethalman1639

    @georgethalman1639

    Жыл бұрын

    You are not weight shifting you are the weight hanging in the center CG and you are pulling that triangle over to the right to turn right or to the left or pulling it under you to go nose down or pushing it away from you to hover or nose up of course you have to have the speed if it's going to climbing altitude otherwise it just will settle to the ground if you do not have at least from what I've read a 22 mph wind and of course that all depends on how much you weigh and the diameter of the rota props but yes you are not pulling your weight over your pulling the triangle to the right left forward or aft...

    From my sport of freestyle climbing ( climbing without ropes ) would love to make the transition to gyro copter hang gliding, does anyone have the blueprints for one of these? If so I would like to build one and fly it over Dartmoor or Bodmin moor??

    Pierre Dignand How about regular para or hang gliding? or base jumping with a wing suit if the others aren't satisfying your need for adrenaline. I don't see how this would be a good way to get into aviation. Imagine trying to compensate for the gyroscopic precession at the same time as you're trying to enter a climbing turn, now do the same in the other direction.

    I want to do wingsuiting but apparently I have to do 150 skydives first, cant afford 150 of them, so thought about buying a microlight two seater Probe so I could use that to get my 150 dives all done.

    Pierre Dignand skydiving can be a bit expensive but one of the established skydiving centers will give you the best bang for your buck. After initial AFF training it will get more affordable and they usually have the equipment for rent. If you're looking for excitement for a bargin (shy of free climbing of course), I would recommend a hang glider! I used to fly this great Skyhook Gypsy from your part of the wold. They are affordable and you can make it just as exciting as you want. Paragliders are even easier to get started on and the price about the same. And you've got all those beautiful places to fly.

    I dont understand how it climbed as far as it did without power. Seems to me it would be the same as a hang glider with a simple wing and glide after running for maybe a hundred feet or so, but not climb and continue to climb.

    It's towed. But it could probably get picked up by a strong wing as well, I've seen hang gliders do that.

    G'day, Peekaboo ! You've been getting around, haven't you...?!?! This thing has all the disadvantages of a Hang Glider and all the disadvantages of a Gyrocopter with none of the advantages of either... The Germans used to have a more advanced version of these in WW-2, used as towed Kites pulled up by their U-Boats, to search a bigger Hotizon for Allied Convoys to attack..; they were better in theory than in Practice. The bloke flying this thing is clearly in the grip of a Death-Wish, simply to be Car-Towing on that Snow-Covered Road beside a High-Tension Powerline...; if a Gust of Wind had arisen from the Left, rolling him Right and Locking him out.., he'd've been fried like a Bug in an Insectocutor... Play Safe...! ;-p Ciao !

    CHOPPERGIRL AIRWAR Ah, yeah, I think I stumbled onto this in my feed, found you here, and couldn't resist ... I had a chance to practice my Anti-Aircraft (Camera) Gunnery on Monday, bagging a BAE Hawk at 1,000 Ft & 350 Knots at the ANZAC Day Memorial Service ; he did two beat-ups & both times I picked him up before he arrived overhead, following his track by audiolocation while he was out of sight..., and on the second run-in I framed him on the horizon 3 miles out, zoomed to full telephoto & as he came in Rifle-Range I reflexively lead him by 5 lengths so as he came overhead he flew *into* my frame and then it got funny.... I pirouetted to follow him out again, which worked well enough but for the point that I turned Right, and after the 180 degree pivot my "Test-Pilot's Ankle" let me topple over sideways...; in front of 1,500 people, between them and the Cenotaph, because I was there to help my mother lay a wreath for the Australian Flying Corps, so we were in the very front row of seats for the old & frail... It gave them a good giggle, and for any who've wondered if my walking-stick was an affectation well they saw what happens when I try going without it... To see a few photos of mum's father in WW-1 check out Part 1 of the "...Glen Innes History House, Make & Model Fashion Parade..." which I uploaded last week ; there 's a really good shot of him in the cockpit of a rare Curtiss Jenny which was such an early model that *it has a Steering-Wheel on top of the Joystick...!* My mother organised the Fashion Parade, to raise money for the local Museum, themed around the Home Front during Wartime, so she really cut loose ; and because it's no doubt her final Fashion Parade (she turns 80 next month) I videoed & posted the whole thing for her. She raked in $6,500 on the night, 300 people showed up, & I even coralled both my kids to be there too. The oldest uniform on the Catwalk was from 1904, and the Australian Light Horseman who began the Fashion Parade led the ANZAC Day March on Horseback, so it was a nicely coherant little Project to video...; it seems that Warriorism is a bigger Religion here in Oz than Christianity, there wouldn't be 500 people in Church on any Sunday in Glen Innes but 1,500 showed up to celebrate the time Australia invaded Turkey... As someone with "AirWar" in your Channel name I figure you'll enjoy the entire effort (?). Have a good one, ;-p Ciao !

    +WarblesOnALot Took the paint off my horse collar cockpit frame yesterday, polished the alluminum, stripped off the paint from my rudder pedals and floor pan today. Starting to look all new and shiny again, looks awesome. Spring is here and I can work outside in the shade. Question: did the VJ have foam wing ribs or such?

    no engine on the aircraft. being towed. This is a completely unpowered version of a Autogyro/Gyrocopter. in both the powered gyrocopters and this glider, the top rotor receives no power from the engine, and instead relies on autorotation.
