Ultra-Wide Landscape Photography on Dartmoor with the Laowa 15mm f/2 Z Mount on a Nikon Z7

How wide do you go with your landscape photography? I love using ultra-wide angle lenses for my landscape photography and in this video, I attach a Laowa 15mm f/2 Zero-D lens to my Nikon Z7 and head to Dartmoor to capture some sunset photographs.

    The Ramson shots at the end, particularly the first with the leaves rushing in at the foreground and the last one with the path were lovely Julian. And this from a man who says he struggles with woodland...Phah! I've hoped for some time that you would show some inland, lowland images from your area! Wide angle lenses are brilliant if you know how to get the best from them and you nailed it with those!

    Steady on Simon, you might make me blush. lol That's most kind of you to say. To be honest though, it is by watching videos like yours that I get inspired to take such shots. I do find the macro shots hard (both composition and camera skills), but I found that the Laowa wide angle lens with it's close focusing was half way between macro and the type of wide angle landscape shots I take. Anyway, most it is down to lack of practice with that genre of photography. I will do more. It's just lovely being in woods with all the smells and the sounds. But I got a long way to go...I had to look up "Ramson" lol Thanks for your support mate. :-)

    Hi Jules: Another wonderful video and the evening that you had was spectacular indeed! We are considering coming to the Dartmoor area in the spring of 2022 and we were wondering what community would be a good base of operations for a few days before we head over to Southampton? Cheers, Keith

    Thanks Keith. You could look at the area around Bovey Tracey (in the south east corner of Dartmoor). You'll good access to Dartmoor, but you'll be close the south coast as well (if you fancy doing some seascapes), and Exeter (and the motorway). :-)

    How do you like to Laowa, Julian? I was thinking of buying Nikon Z 14-24 (and selling my Nikon F-mount 14-24) but this Laowa seems like a very cost-effective (and worthy?) alternative. Presumably manual lens is fine for landscapes.

  • @jbairdexp

    @jbairdexp

    Hi, nothing wrong with a manual lens for landscapes. The Laowa lens is great for it's price, but it's not as sharp as say my 14-30. But I needed a cheap, fast aperture, wide angle lens for occasional use, so for me there was little point in spending a large sum of money on the 12-24 f/2.8. As with all these things, it all depends on how you are going to use the lens and how much you are willing to spend. Given that you've purchased a Z9, I would think the 12-24 or 14-30 is a better choice and in budget. :-)

  • @mitchellweitzman9329

    great video and production! compared to your 14-30 Z, how do the sharpness of the two compare? is the laowa even good at large open apertures? thanks!

  • @jbairdexp

    @jbairdexp

    Thanks Mitchell, glad you liked the video. I don't use the lens very often to be honest, but it's not as sharp as the 14-30. IT's a good lens for it's price, but it's no replacement for the 14-30.

    Wow you dropped lucky, but seeing as I’m a believer of making your own luck! Some great shots. Horizontal for me. 4:31 gorgeous! I don’t normally get drawn in for gear videos but I’ve sold my 16-35 f4 just too big with the FTZ on the Z7. I don’t feel a wide angle zoom is needed for me, so this lens could be heading my way! Or let me know when your selling it 🤣

  • @jbairdexp

    @jbairdexp

    Cheers mate, I agree, you do make your own luck and it starts with making the effort to get out in the first place! Given the choice, I'd still pick my Nikkor Z 14-30 over the Laowa because it's so versatile, but there is nothing wrong with the image quality of the Laowa. Different lenses, different needs. Great to have all this choice isn't it!

  • @MaliDaviesPhotography

    @MaliDaviesPhotography

    @@jbairdexp all that choice I guess has always been there, but now with mirrorless it does seem to be more affordable? I think this is something that gets over looked. Take the Z7 and 24-70 f4 imagine that as a starter kit 10 years ago, wow! The D850 and a lens was a bell of a lot more. I’m going on lol 😂 maybe an idea for discussion.

    Nice work Julian. I think I preferred the vertical one where you asked. the landscape view seemed to lack something on the right. I wonder where you are going for the astro work? I would have thought Dartmoor was the ideal spot. I had hoped to do a bit in the Lakes last week but not one clear night sky. Will just have to go back again... Thanks for sharing Julian.

    Hi, I never used a L bracket on my D850 when I had one because of the tripod head I was using. However, I use an L-bracket from 3 Legged Thing on my Z7 at it's excellent. I expect they'll do one for the D850.

    How does it compare with your other wide angle? I can't say that I do hardly any wide angle shots, mainly because foreground is an afterthought for me; although I did get down low and shove some seathrift into a shot today to hide a mess of seaweed. I'll need to make the effort.

    Hey Ian, hard to say at the moment because I haven't done any proper side by side comparison but the images from the Laowa look great. However, the Nikkor 14-30mm is probably always going to edge it in terms of which lens I take out. It's super sharp and focal length is very handy.
