Ultra-Small Water Power Generator

Ғылым және технология

Hydroelectric generation uses water power to drive turbines and is an important means for producing the electricity so essential for modern life. Facilities have been becoming smaller, with generators able to use diverse water power sources. We’ll look at an ultra-small generator developed in Gifu that’s highly portable and works even with shallow, slow moving water. Already tested powering street lights, it promises to allow people in the world’s remote regions to generate their own electricity for the first time.

    That's a very simple yet such an efficient solution. It works on the principle of Archimedes Screw . Most of the times your thinking is limited by simply imposing the condition that you need height(P.E=mgh=>K.E) to produce electricity from water. But having proper knowledge of working of turbines working ranges and a little bit of height can produce a very effective results as shown in the video (although you will produce only double figures of watts, considering the size).

    For small scale hydro, I've always wondered about anchoring a similarly sized prop or paddle-wheel boat to the bottom of a river and driving generators with that. Perhaps on a larger model (small craft), even charging an onboard battery which could then move the boat via the same mechanism. as in, charging while anchored until it generates enough power to move.

    Good old Archimedes screw, originally designed as a lift pump for all the reasons others have mentioned - simply design, isn't affected by small debris, sand, grit, etc like impeller pumps can be. Fitting a generator instead of a motor is also an old idea. Using it for small scale lighting can work, however that open trough under the screw is inefficient and is why it needs the angle to assist the water flow. The screw should be fully encased in a tube. That would greatly increase the efficiency, and it wouldn't need the angle, it would still work submerged, or in heavy flood flow, where excess water would simply flow over the top and not interfere with the screw operation

    I was thinking the same thing. Or for anybody that has sump pumps, could they use one to charge a battery in a flood condition? So while your sump pump is running, pumping out the basement, it charges a battery so if the power from the street it lost, it will still continue running the pump. There will be some loss there as the pump would draw more than it generates, but it might work.

    It depends on where you live, of course, but generally, if you own the land, and the rights to the river, it should be no problem. Huh? Well you have one already, its called a coal filter, literally anyone can do it (cloth, crushed charcoal on top, then sand, then tiny rocks and gravel in an upright bottle). That still leaves microbes and stuff, but you can purify those by running a transparent tube in zigsags through a long bigger mirror tube with UV lights installed in there, it'll purify literally everything... Or just a long set of transparent tubes that run under the sun. Or just boil it.

They don't use (or need) vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, electric stoves or other devices using high-wattage power. Light is key - and the growing ubiquity of cellphones enables communication. These two factors (light and communication) are fundamental to small business development, education and economic growth, so this idea is perfect for billions of people in the developing world.

Sure, the screw portion of the device has the same properties, but the Archimedes screw was a hand-cranked pump to bring liquids and grains to higher altitudes. Not so much hand-cranked nowadays but you get it. This is almost literally the opposite of an Archimedes screw. Not saying it's a brand new invention worthy of crazy award, but it's not what people here are saying. • @walterbunn280

    @walterbunn280

    4 жыл бұрын

    Actually debris, wild life, and flooding are areas where this design really shines. This type of turbine is relatively safe for fish. The fish don't have to spend a lot of time in the path of the turbine blade, and, even if they get near it, the blade probably isn't moving fast enough to cause injury to them. The Later parts of this turbine are not screened so debris and wild life shouldn't be a problem. Flooding might be a bit more worrisome, since this design looks like it might stop spinning if it's submerged, but it is based on low rotation speeds. Water depth might not matter, depending on geometry of the creek bed.
