Ultra Light Fizan Compact trekking poles - Reviewed after breaking them

After breaking my Fizan Compact trekking poles I decided to give them a through review, that analyzes their strengths and weaknesses.
The Fizan Compact is 3-piece aluminum trekking pole that uses a twist-lock adjustment system to maintain its length. You don’t need to use a lot of force to twist the segments together and the poles are resistant under weight. However in dusty or freezing conditions I have noticed the locks occasionaly slip.
Specs at a Glance
- Fizan claims that each pole weighs 158 grams but after weighing them myself I found that they actually have 171 grams, (with straps and summer baskets)
- The maximum lenght of the poles is 132 cm
- The advertised collapsed length is 58 cm, but they are actually 60 cm long
- The Grips are made of EVA foam, but their usable length is only 9 cm, so I think these poles would be a better fit for people with regular or smaller hands. After significant usage the foam will start to chip, but not enough to bother you in any way.
Baskets
The poles have carbide tips and come with three different plastic baskets.
- The summer baskets have a small footprint and are the lightest.
- Winter bakets have a wider support for weight distribution.
- The mud baskets can also be used to prevent rock entrapment.
Because the basckets rely on tightness to stay on, as you wear through them they can detach under deep snow or rocky terrain.
Fizan doesent provide you with any spare baskets.
Performance & pricetag
Well, it took me one hike to get adjusted to them, because they are so lightweight you can barely feel them.
They sometimes vibrate on rocky terrain, but they dont send shockwaves up your arms.
These poles flex under big weights, but they can also break if you put your whole weight on just one of them and the pole hits the ground at the wrong angle.
The poles I have survived for 350 km...and 60 or 70% of this distance they ware used on steep ascents and descents on rough terrain.
With a price tag of around 50 euros, the Fizan Compact is one of the most affordable and lightweight trekking poles on the market,
You`re probably asking yourselfs.... How did I manage to break the pole?
Well... the truth is that i`ve stepped on it, and during the descent from where we ware filming this review... this happend.
Even though i`m not happy that I broke them in a relative small number of km, i have to mention the fact that i used them really hard and I never did any maintanance on them.
In conclusion I feel that the performance you get for the price is remarkable, but due to it`s light weight, the durability of the product might not be as good as other types of poles that are heavier.

I walked 1100km across Spain with them, they were so light and sturdy. I loved the shock absorption too, handy when walking over rocky terrain. Would definitely buy them again if mine broke too!

What a great video. I\ve just bought the Fizan poles, and am struggling to use them, because I don't seem to have the gizmo that tights the poles into a fixed position. So... but at least I now trust the poles! Thank you Cetateanul.

I have had mine for 7 years for the JMT and 1/3 of the PCT. Older model weigh 6 oz. Thinking of upgrading if I can get 5 oz. for $70 on Amazon.

I don`t know, i never used them like that. I did use them as support for my Zpacks Duplex, and they work great.

At the store. But they are pretty sturdy. After i broke this pair i had a pair with which i’ve done around 2000 km. And i used them for my Zpacks tent also.

@@CetateanulCarpatin thanks a lot. I was also thinking about winter baskets. Could you get those winter baskets somewhere without any problems?

Better to break your stick than break your body parts. They did their job.

I think the weight of the owner has something to do with their durability :)

Evergreen Man Yes, that's true :-) Physics sux :-):-) Still (as I have mentioned in my review), it's a great piece of gear... just need to be a bit gentle... or you know? Maybe you need to hike some long trail (PCT, CDT, AT, Transalpina,...) to loose some weight :-):-) I have lost 10 kg after like 1,5 month on PCT... and than there was nothing to loose from the fat anymore:-)

I already lost some of the weight, whats the point of ultra light packing if you carry around a belly? :) Now i`m at 82 kg, but when i bought the Fizans I was 97 kg and had a pack of 13-15 kg and absolutely no regard for their well being, so yeah, they are pretty sturdy for how much they weigh, and that`s the reason why I got a new pair. A green pair, obviously :)) I have some thru hikes planned for this year, and I can`t even begin to tell you how excited I am about revealing some lesser known trails that are Romania has to offer.

Evergreen Man I have been told by friend about trails in Romania. So far I have hiker Rila and Pirin in Bulgaria... was very very nice... and there are mountain huts, so you can buy food as you walk :-) kzread.info/dash/bejne/pnWhr5ZuaM-adco.html Depended on you height (180 cm?) ideal weight would be around 76 kg... it's not the best to be just skinny, then you need to carry your food in the backpack - then is a much better to carry the energy in the fat on your body... and "eat" from it like 100 grams a day :-):-)

There are plenty of marked trails in Romania, and they are not as crowded as other more popular places in Europe. But what I really like is that there are also a lot of unmarked trails that allow you to experience nature at it`s best.
