As a civil engineer, I have to fail the arch bridge on two accounts: 1. The bridge model is a tied-arch bridge, which works like a bow: the arch provides tensile force to a tying chord running flat/straight between the two ends. So bending the road deck up bends this chord up, which doesn't work as it will want to snap back into flat position. Curved roadways are possible on other types of arch bridges, such as through-arch (e.g. the Sydney Harbor Bridge) as the abutments provide the tensile resistance rather than a chord. 2. The bridge arches should align with the vertical columns. As designed, the weight of the bridge span and arch has to transfer laterally via a cantilever to the columns down to the water. Possible, but could be a huge source of failure and adds unnecessary complexity. Moving the columns out to meet where the arch touches down on the bridge deck would be far more realistic.

Ah what a shame! Thanks for the details. I might keep it for now until I can figure out a more realistic way that’s also fairly unique and not just a highway
Look at those majestic ribbons of concrete draping your city. Eight lanes of shimmering concrete. Smooth, safe, fast. Traffic jams will be a thing of the past. A place where people get off and on the freeway! Soon, there will be a string of gas stations, cheap motels, fast food restaurants, and billboards for as far as the eye can see! Absolutely Breathtaking. You share the same amazing vision as Judge Doom.

As a fun little detail you could remove the catenaries from the abandoned rail lines. Then you don't have to worry about the clearance and it's visually different from the active rail lines

Per my quick Google search, the Lenape Natives were the original indigenous people in Manhattan. Manhattan is their word for "the place where we get bows" or "place for gathering the (wood to make) bows". Nisha Palëpaya translates to Two Dollars. Probably not a great name for a city, but might be a good rabbit hole to go down for ideas.

Manhattan could be called Guldenburg, or something similar. Guilder or Florin (Gulden or Florijn in Dutch) was the currency of the Netherlands before the Euro; a nod to New York's Dutch past, and their affinity for money and commerce.
The trench you were working on starting at 26:40 would have been a lot easier with the Extended Road Upgrades mod by ST-Apps. That being said, I admire your perseverance and it ended up looking great!

Personally, I like the golden gate bridge. Is it big? Yes, absolutely. Do we all dislike the red colour. Also, yes. Eventually, there will be a mod to recolour it, and it won't bother you anymore.

Since New York was originally settled by the Dutch and was called New Amsterdam, I think you should include a few examples of that as well. Like the street pattern below Wall Street are the ones the Dutch made. Broadway for example was translated from Dutch “Brede Weg” which means wide road. Even the flag of New York has Dutch colors in it. So I think it would be fitting if you made the same kind of street pattern here, for the lower part of the Manhattan equivalent. And you could add some of the highest level european level row homes since they are pretty Dutch looking.
The Golden Gate Bridge is perfect for that area. The Verrazano Bridge is also big and crosses the NY sound like the one you have in the game
I really liked how you just demolished soo much. It felt really realistic and the fact that at some point it will be detailed up again makes me already feel satisfied. Great video!
A nod to the British viewers, I definitely think you should call the in-universe Manhattan 'Poundland' ;p
That truss viaduct you were talking about around 15:00 is called the Pulaski skyway, and it is a very interesting highway! I think you should keep the golden gate for now and recolor it if possible when it comes!
At the trench section at 26:40, you can make it narrower if you put one direction of the highway sunken and the other directly underground. This way there's only 2 lanes in between the couplet, look up at Ronda Litoral (B-10) highway in Barcelona, in the section where it pops up and goes parallel to Passeig de Colom, for inspiration.
Really enjoyed this one good to see you back two dollars

Around 30:00 I realized how useful a "half-bridge" option for the Extended Road Upgrades mod would be. Essentially a bridge (allowing things to be built under it) which is attached to the terrain at one side allowing zoning. A modification of the retaining wall option to show what's underneath.
3:00 You can call it Drachmattan, on the oldest currency in the world - the Drachma. Really cool video, greetings from Bulgaria! 😎
You've hooked me on these videos. I really like to watch the detailing and the mods are a gamechanger!!
Ah, around all of the bridges that are meant to have ship routes underneath, you need to put concrete pillars or small islands that protect the bridge. Usually, they mark safe zones for ships to go through and basically serve as bumpers for the bridge if the ship were to steer off the centre and destroy one of the bridge pillars.
You could always do an "öresundsbron" instead, half tunnel, half bridge, switching in the middle at a manmade island.
@omgnuub
18 күн бұрын
Reason for the tunnel instead of just bridge all the way is the airport right next to it so it would be cool to have an airport next to a öresundsbron style bridge-tunnel-combo
@bjornk14
18 күн бұрын
@@omgnuub oh, i did not know that. I just assumed it was because of it otherwise might have blocked boat traffic into the baltic sea. ^^'
about the arch bridge, as a structural engineering student, swapping out those pillars was a good idea, but what's NOT a good idea is making the supports even flimsier. The arch will offload its thrust forces and with an insane arch in the bridge deck like that, it can't withstand the tension (which is why it's called a _tied_ arch bridge) In this case, with your arched bridge deck, both the deck and the arch will impose strong outwards (lateral) forces on the support columns, so you probably need a concrete pier the size of half the span between it and the next pillar, that's the sizes we're talking about here.
Love it! And love seeing you find more enthusiasm for it again. For creating the sunken highway under the two roads flanking above, how about making the roads above elevated (bridge) sections with a central pillar so you scooch the pillars all the way up to the edge of the highway which would allow the roads to slightly overhang the highway below? Should create that feel of still being able to see the center of the highway between the two roads above. My entry is "Twenty Twen-Twenhattan." With all the industry you want to build, sounds like economy 2.0 is going to force a metric ishton of residential to support without a mod to scale back industrial building employment numbers. Curious to see how it shakes out! And looking forward to detailing out the build today.
Petition for Tophatten. cause top hat or smthin i dunno
excellent. really enjoyed this one. this is where you really shine ps. i’m not convinced about the arch bridge either
Great ep. it's great to se cs2 are getting better with mods, especially move it and find it, i did't saw you use surfaces vut i much recomend it, they are similar to the ones in City xxl, awesome thing with a lot of potential.
Hello $2.20. I stumbled upon your video after looking up cities skylines 2 after realizing is haven’t thought in a while. I have to say, those crazy intersections over the highway are exactly like what you see over the many highways and parkways that tear through the Bronx that are perpetually blocked up (and operate on a free for all system). If you make a train station on the west side of bank island that connects to the Jersey side and Long Island, you should name it Penny Station.
I think that a stretch of the I-190N in Buffalo, NY is a great representation of how highways killed neighborhoods. It initially runs directly over tons of residential development and then hogs the waterfront for a good couple miles.
That congestion on the highway is not because there is a highway, its because its poor road planning, 3 lanes with Car and truck traffic merging into a single lane, thats definitely gonna create congestion, try upgrading that, and see where most of the traffic is going and add lanes based on that
35:04 "And I think it's a little qUiRkY interesting aspect" loll, anyways, great video!! It was also nice, 'cause I had like a whole evening watching it!!
You should call it Hamburrough. 🍔 "The Big Cheese"
“Moneyton” is heavy on the money wordplay and sounds just a bit like Manhattan
I'd love to see some large intersections with jughandles, you see those everywhere in NJ. Also I think a giant corporate park would be a great addition if you were to make a more suburbs-y area on the outskirts of the map. A place like '40.662579058581436, -74.4147308613381' would be SUCH a neat build. Great work so far!
Enjoying watching. Very realistic. ☺️😁👍🇬🇧
The tied arch bridge you built at 12:00 is pretty solid over all. Though I'm not sure if having a bump in the bridge deck is entirely realistic. Those bridges work like a bow, with the arch being the body of the bow and the deck acting as the string, keeping the arch in tension. That allows the bridge to stand on relatively small pillars. You could add some protection against ship allisions once the port gets built, that's a pretty common thing to do for bridges that see a lot of large shipping traffic. Also side-note, you could add hints of highways that were for whatever reason unfinished. Maybe a section of a neighbourhood that is suspiciously highway shaped but instead it's overgrown
@hoser193
19 күн бұрын
The arch in the roadway is completely realistic. Look at the Wiliminton Memorial Bridge outside of Wilimington Deleware to get an example. I have crossed that bridge so many time I don't remember them all. I also agree that the pillars need some sort of protection from ship traffic. The Francis Scott Key Bridge disaster is a prime current example.
@BioArk
17 күн бұрын
@@hoser193 The example you gave is a suspension bridge, hence it arches because its pillars provide the tensile resistance. In this video, the arch of the bridge provides the resistance, hence it wouldn't be entirely realistic for the bridge deck to have a bump like that.
You could have a neighborhood in the city called Algonquin. It's a Native American name and also a reference to GTA 4, which you said was one of your inspirations for how you build compact cities.
Loved the video! Could you maybe make once a while a few videos in City Skylines 1? Well keep up the good work and have a nice day!

Or Applehattan, because of new York being referred to as the Big Apple 😂
In the area of downtown where you cleared 4 blocks, you can add/off ramps to each of those one way streets in the opposite direction. That will address your desire to have traffic flow in each direction of the highway from downtown.
Been watching this series since it first started I’m sorry that the game let you down a little I can’t wait to see what you make of the Manhattan area
If you haven't looked, you should check out the two different ways the tunnels between New Jersey and Manhattan connect. You got the Holland tunnel pretty close, and you should check out the massive roads used to get into it. The Lincoln is my favorite because of the big loop it does to go underground.
your city have traffic "BUILD MORE LANES" love a good highway episode!
So excited to see some big highway changes to New Dimesburg!!! Can't wait to see how the downtown begins to evolve to this new stream of traffic.
I haven't seen all of the rest of the videos in this series (and haven't finished even this one yet) but I noticed that traffic jam bridge is like half taxis. I had that once with a regional highway. Fixed it by putting in trains to that city. There are more than 4 neighbours - each edge of the square can have multiple cities, depending on where you put the connection. Getting rid of the taxis will help that traffic flow
On the subject of terrible highways: do you plan on making a Long Island-esque part of the map? If you are, then you can make the Long Island Expressway, the worst highway in the American Interstate system.

@@twodollarstwentyyou should look in the the NY state parkway system! NY has a full car only highway system designed to go from park to park. Maybe a beach area like Jones Beach?
I love the Golden Gate Bridge and it fits perfectly fine. Also the hills at one side of the bridge are reminding me of the original Bridge. And as it is your own World and not the exact copy of New York I don't see a problem in using it.
Holy Moses! Robert Moses that is! ;) I would call Manhattan "Capital Island". It's a double meaning with "capitol city" meeting "capital" a.k.a. MONEY.
Might I suggest Wallettan for Manhattan? Sounds and reads like Manhattan with a bit of Wall Street as well, along with Wallet for the money theme.
The bridge looks great in my opinion. Especially matches the trees in the fall
I particularly liked the parallel road and rail part, with the highway on the same alignment as the railway it formed a picture of the history of the area - starting with a pre-railway avenue on the heights, with railways using a cut and cover tunnel under the avenue when they arrived and then later, once the rail traffic had reduced, the city repurposing most of the rail route for a new highway
oh wow a thursday video! it’s a good day.
Inspiration from New Jersey is always great if you want highway traffic!
That intro scene/ a longer turn lane could help stop the accidents
I love the bridge!!
The Golden Gate Bridge isn’t entirely unrealistic! The company that built it also built a bridge in Lisbon (the 25th of April Bridge) that looks almost identical, so maybe that same company was hired to build on in New Dollarton too
a section of the A12 highway in Belgium is a trench highway similar to the one you made, might be worth checking out :)
You could connect the highway directly with the tunnel to future proof it
AWESOME
You could call your version of Manhattan Stockton, as a nod to the trading hubs of Wall Street and the Financial District! Maybe even Stockton Island, similar to Staten Island.
nice vid
love it.
The motorway episodes are always my favourite
A name for the "Manhattan"-like island to consider: New Amsterdam, after the historical Dutch colony before it was renamed New York
I definitely think it needs on-ramp access. I'm sure there will be suburban developments out there later on, and even if there aren't, usually when one exit doesn’t cover a direction, there's one nearby to provide that missing access, or at least that's the case in Portland. In your case, you have two exits, and there isn't an on-ramp in sight, which in addition to adding frustration to your imaginary commuters, doesn’t seem to be very realistic.
The Verazzano Narrows Bridge that crosses New York Harbor (from Staten Island to Brooklyn) is similar in scale to the Golden Gate Bridge.
Man, there is a MOD that allows you to switch any road to a bridge, or elevated, or Quays, retaining walls, or whatever you want with only one click. I don´t understand why you're still struggling with keys like terraforming and that stuff. i think the mod's name is Extended Roads. I think that would be a BIG upgrade for your gameplay if you get this mod.🙏
If you want traffic and a smaller Bridge, you could go with a bridge-tunnel, like the ones in south eastern VA.
Oh man with those retaining walls.. you sir need Extended Road Upgrades mod.
i would say more connections are needed from street level to the highway. otherwise, great effort!
been waiting for this episode for ages! cant have an american city without a massive highway network!
You can do a bridge into a tunnel for that big stretch of water since those are somewhat common on the east coast
To the GG bridge you should add ship collision protective measures to it for realism, especially following the recent Baltimore bridge collapse. You should check out practical engineering's video on the disaster, for more details!
I think someone already proposed this, but Manhattan should definitely be called Bankhattan
Dont you dare deleting THE BRIDGE! Looks awesome
Your Golden Gate bridge is like a red version of the blue George Washington bridge in manhattan.
I really enjoyed the video the i didnt even feel thats its 40 mins long please we want more video !!!!
I haven't watched the full thing, but the tip of the island where the bridge is could be a future Central Business Area, or an area made to look like Charleston, SC!
I would recommend going with "Stirling Island" for the 'Manhatten island' part :)
The new highway with the freeway underneath kinda looks like the north south motorway in Adelaide The bridge part has a smaller road underneath, and then it goes underground with an open roof and the smaller roads either side
for the bridge, it is basically exactly as it is in NY with the verraznno narrows bridge just down the bay from manhattan, but its blue, so it makes perfect sense visually to me. if you still don't like the look of it you could always make it a tunnel like the lincoln/holland/hughes tunnels instead. a bit of terraforming could make the span a little less daunting and unrealistic.
Love Love Love the bridge
It's said that Peter Minuit bought Manhattan from the locals for the Netherlands for 60 Gulden and a handful of beads. So maybe call the island "Gulden", "Guilder" (the english word for Gulden) or "SixtyGulden" or "Sixtyguilder" It was the equivalent of 24 dollars at the time. So can use something to that effect as well
Maybe one of those slang terms? “Benjamin”, “Bucksville”, “Greenback”, “Semolian”, “Nickeltown”, “Jackson”
For the tunnel entrance, you can also try something in the style of the Lincoln Tunnel
I did a lot of research and lot of generating names in chatGPT mixing languages and abstract stems. What about Arcwood Island?
I think the Florence grid should be aligned to Cherry/Strawberry Street and the railway going through it. I can't see it having developed in the grid that it is now historically, it would make much more sense to be aligned with the rail
Verazzano is just as iconic but golden gate gets all the attention
Would a brige like the gateway in Brisbane or Tasman Bridge in Hobart work for the opening of the bay?
Fortuneton would be a good name
That arch bridge as magnificent as it may have turned out. Is kind of hugely over engineered considering there’s a rail bridge just on the other side that’s not tall enough for medium-large boats let alone legitimate ships. Overall though decent builds today 👍
All that smoke from the industrial area can be removed with better bulldozer, some might even be fine but currently there seem to be too many, removing the chimney will also remove the smoke
I feel like something along the lines of Coinisle or Coinhattan would be a nice name for the Manhattan equivalent to your city.
Definitely need an on ramp for downtown!
For the sunken highway at 30:00 have the frontage road closest to the rail line be an elevated road, and run the highway underneath. A cross-section would look like 🛤_T_Γ
