    I'm thinkin' it would be a monster helper when I go fishin'. Lots of times, the fish are just to big to handle by myself, so have to let them go. Then when I tell my buddies about the fishes I caught, nobody believes me! What a bummer!! This winch could change the whole world for fishermens!!! A better world of Truth and Honesty!!!! Might even get some of these honest fishermen to run for political office. Now THAT would change the world!!!!! Everybody knows fishermens are a LOT more honest than golfers!! Hi Tony I just subscribed to you from this channel as this is the one I use most of the time to watch videos of the channels that I subscribe to. My brother either bought or rented a portable winch that he used on a tree removal job, it was very helpful. Frances, you’re right a tractor and a snatch block will work most of the time. Definitely the nose cone is a must for pulling logs out easier. I got one of the 4000 series.. biggest problem/limitation is not the ability of the motor to keep the capstan drum spinning, in fact I've never been able to stall it out, the limitation is with the ability of the rope to grab the capstan drum and not just have it slip.. Bigger the rope you use, less wraps you can get, and more slippage.. but use too small of a rope and it'll just snap. Using 1/4" dyneema winch line is the best I've found, can get 5 wraps and it's alot harder for it to slip vs 3-4 you can get with 7/16"-3/8" rope

  • @TonysCoolTools

    @TonysCoolTools

    3 ай бұрын

    Josh I’m going to have to try the 1/4” Dyneema rope. I’ve not had too much trouble with slippage on either the 4000 or 5000 winches I have. For me I more often stall the engine from pulling to heavy a log. Appreciate you watching and commenting 👍TCT

    It slips because the diameter of the drum is very small. The smaller the diameter of the drum, the smaller the contact area between the rope and the drum, which affects friction/traction. The German company EDER - Maschinenbau GmbH uses much larger drums in its winches.

    Tony, since you in the winching logs senario look into Lewis winch, its a chainsaw mounted winch with lot of power depending on the size of chainsaw. Have been using the skidding cone for the last 2 year work like a charm no hangup, i use a wire choker true the cone . Good job, have a good day.

    Pascal I looked into the Lewis Winch many years ago and it can winch double what the Portable Winch can do in a straight line pull and is slightly faster. There was a couple reasons I used the Portable winch. 1st l liked the rope better then steel cable. If you don’t have the spool tightened up on the LW you’ll end up with a bad birds nest and possibly need to replace the cable. 2nd you’re limited on cable length to 150’. 3rd reason was weight, the Portable Winch I first started using was the PCW5000 weighing in at 35 lbs while the Lewis Winch body alone was 22lbs when you add the 150’ cable and a 50cc chainsaw engine you are between 42 &50lbs . With that being said the Lewis winch is a TANK and can pull some serious weight when you add a snatch lock and get multiplied mechanic advantage. Either unit would be a pleasure to use and make my timber harvesting easier. Thanks for watching, commenting and sharing your story.👍TCT

    Great Video Tony. I have PWC 5000 and there really good winches. The downside is it’s just slow going and it’s basically a backup for when nothing else will work. When you attach a pulley on winch as you showed on the trailer, it is a change of direction only and there is no mechanical advantage. Nice work on the video.

    Richard I don’t know if you are aware but I believe you still can buy an additional capstan for your PCW5000 that will get you to the 44ft per minute. As an FYI by attaching the snatch block to the object I’m pulling I am increasing the power X1. I do have a separate snatch block for changing directions. Appreciate you watching and commenting 👍TCT

    Couple thoughts from the peanut gallery. A. Ear protection B. Why not pull the log up into the trailer ? Then dump it and buck it at home at your leisure. Cuts your 12 hour day by 2 hours easily. C. standing directly in line of the pull might be considered dangerous when working with a winch. Maybe that rope will never break, snap or tear apart but. . . . There is a bunch of kinetic energy in that line it it's going to be released violently should it fail. Don't get dead -Chris Carlson

    Jean, you could definitely load the logs right into the dump trailer or just get logs to landing and buck right there and leave the mess. Either way works. We were both wearing ear protection. When Chris was filming he had ear plugs and not earmuffs. I agree definitely don’t stand right behind the winch in case rope breaks. Appreciate you watching and commenting 👍TCT

    Great presentation and demonstration of the portable winch. I'd be concerned with getting a major knotted tangled pile of spaghetti with a rope that long that is thrown into a bucket. How does it keep from tangling up?

    Cool video. Used a similar product on Sesrch&Rescue over-the-bank work 30 years ago. I'm not sure if this is the same brand we used. Maybe it was. Any idea what the stretch factor is on that rope? And how a stretchy rope (i.e., climbing rope is typically around 20 % stretch) would affect the winch use? We used 9mm x 60 meter (200 ft) climbing rope.

  • @TonysCoolTools

    @TonysCoolTools

    Jim I know that the double braid polyester rope is a static rope with minimal stretch unlike a climbing rope that has a stretch built in for shock absorption. I’m sure Portable Winch would have all the specs on the percentage of stretch on their 10mm rope.👍TCT

    Now that you have used both the pcw5000 and pcw4000, which do you prefer? Pcw4000: Is that plastic ARM device going to hold up long term? Do you really notice the lighter weight compared to the pcw5000? Pcw5000: Does the motor stall often if not completely level? How big of a problem is that? Thanks

    Miguel though all three units(5000, 4000, 3000Li battery) I’ve tested can do a straight line pull of 2200lbs I find I like the 4000 the best for a couple reasons. Almost 10 lbs difference between the 5000 and 4000, and yes you can tell the difference when working all day. The rope capture is not plastic but painted metal of some kind and definitely looks like the fingers that hold the rope will last a long time. I also like the fact I don’t have to worry about tipping motor and engine killing on the 4000 like the 500O. It’s not a big issue but when you’re working a the side of a hill it gets annoying having to keep engine level. With all that said my money is on the 4000 if I had to pick one. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

    Cool tool. The Binford 6100 version would be V8 powered with a 4 speed transmission ;) Out of curiosity does Portable Winch offer different sizes in the capstans? I've seen capstan winches before that have high power/low speed and high speed/low power so that you can take advantage of not having the full pulling capacity needed.

    Hi Alan, great to hear from you. Ha ha you’re right the Binford version would be nitrous fueled and remote controlled 😂 To my knowledge the 46MM is the only capstan available. On the PCW5000 there was an option for a slightly larger capstan but by going larger you sacrificed pulling power. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

    Though I have all three PCW5000, 4000 & 3000Li my favorite is the PCW4000. All three have a capacity of 2200 lbs straight line pull. What I like about the 4000 is it’s about 10 lbs light than the 5000, has the progress capture mechanism to hold tension on your line after engine is shut off. And lastly the winch won’t kill if it’s tipped sideways. The PCW4000 is similar to a chainsaw and works in any position. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

    @@TonysCoolTools ok, good to know. Care to explain why? The PCW4000 has more complexity and seems more likely to have issues. PCW5000 in contrast appears simple and proven. Is the 4 that much better than the 5?

  • @TonysCoolTools

    @TonysCoolTools

    @@AlfioS Alfio, all three units are awesome and built like tanks. The progress capture mechanism is truly the only device that is not on the 3000 or 5000 winches. It’s very well made and I don’t see it breaking easily. And if it should break in the field it will operate identical to the 5000. But, as I pointed out the engine is the big difference. You will find when engaging the capstans pulley the engine rocks from side to side. Many times on the 5000 the engine stalled on me because it wasn’t level. This get more important when working on a hill or incline. The 4000 works in all conditions. Hope this answers your question 👍TCT
