ULTIMATE VOX BREAKBEAT DRUM SET | The Sound of Clyde Stubblefield, James Brown & The Funky Drummer

Музыка

The sound of the Funky Drummer! Dylan Wissing (Alicia Keys, John Legend, Drake) restores the EXACT model Vox drum set that Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks played on stage and in studio with James Brown in the later 1960s - most likely including on the legendary "Funky Drummer" breakbeat.

I will! Thanks for the tip. I'm a little afraid to do much of anything to these heads, since they are old and very used, but still have that Clyde/Jabo sound. Magic Eraser sounds pretty safe...

Sat in with jabos band he used to play with at the red bar down in the pan handle of Florida for a couple summers, like early 2000s, he was super cool.

I enjoyed the video. Your enthusiasm is clear for the vintage vibe. JB is kinda spiritual music. Funky drummer is a groove I keep developing myself. Jabo was great too. Thanks for all the history. God bless from Ireland.

I have an older Gretsch snare with a similar lever style throw (microsensitive in Gretsch terms) and I found wrapping a rubber band around the lever, and then taking it around the whole throw mechanism to have enough resistance to keep it in place while playing, but I can still muscle it back into the off position. Ironically enough, I just put up a short on my channel about it too.

I’ve had that same problem. Old Gretsch Microsensitive strainers are known for popping off when you play especially if you do some rim shots. The good thing now is Gretsch sells a brand new Microsensitive strainer that looks just like the original and has the exact same holes spacing so you don’t have to drill extra holes into your vintage Gretsch shell. The new strainer works a lot better and you can lock the throw off arm in place when you put the snares on.

@@philipnestor5034 agreed, those new Gretsch Microsensitive strainers are a dramatically improved version of the originals! Same with the new Ludwig replacement for the P-83, although why they gave the new butts a different hole spacing is beyond me...

You can use the melted wax from tea candles as a penetrating lubricant to get break seized screws loose. I wont say it will the finish unscathed, but it's less harsh than oils.

That's really cool, and I've never encountered that! Have you tried the process yourself, and how did it go if so? I'm honestly not planning to do any more on this particular kit, as it's holding together with zero issues. But this is great to know for the future!
