More Shop Greatness: shopnationstore.com
Part 2 of the garage shop cabinet build is underway! In this episode we progress on the cabinet carcasses we built in part 1. We add a face frame to all of the cabinets and construct the doors using tongue and groove joinery. Follow along on this journey as I build my "ultimate shop cabinets" on my journey towards shop greatness. The video following this one will be the finishing work including door & hardware mounting, and painting.
If you are intimidated by the thought of building your own cabinets, fear not. I try and show you how to do it in a step by step fashion that anyone could follow. I am not a master woodworker by any means so if I can do it - so can you!
The lower cabinets are next and will include lots of cool features including dust collection, power outlets, miter saw station, and tons of drawer storage. When this is done I will have ZERO excuses for having a messy or un-organized shop.

First off, fantastic job sir. Just a couple of suggestions that might help you: I too run out of clamps, so get yourself a pneumatic pin nail gun and tack through the tongue an grove portion on the inside of the doors, two per corner. To get tight joints on face frames, cut your adjoining surfaces with a 5 degree back angle where the outer portion of the frames are a point so that the back portions of the boards are not able to push away from each other, giving you a gap. Again, not criticism as this is fantastic, especially encouraging the cut list layout. You sir, rock.

I'm building some cabinets for our laundry room and came back to this video to see how you did your shaker style doors. Not sure if you've ever gone back and watched any of these old videos, but I'd like to point your attention to the 8:30'ish mark of this one......"These are the early videos that we're all gonna laugh at later!" hahahaha

Ordered and have started building this setup. I finished the upper cabinets and I have one observation. I noticed that in your video, you made the doors differently than in the plans. In the video, you fit the top and bottom pieces inside the stiles, and this looks to be the best way to do it. However, in the plans, you have the stiles fit into the top and bottom pieces. I followed the plans, and I can say that the doors are much less sturdy this way. If stressed they easily snap off! Given that, once the doors are on, it takes no effort to open and close so I don’t expect it to be an issue. Very pleased with the build so far!

I've been enjoying your videos and I like how genuine everything seems. Not hiding anything and showing mess ups and how to fix them or admitting if you have no idea! I've liked these cabinet videos so much that I asked my buddy if he wants me to build him some. I don't have a garage or space big enough to do them but was really motivated to make some so I'm going over there to do it. I'll take advantage of his space and do a few projects along with them too. I have to say, when I saw how many tongues you were making, I couldn't help but saying over and over "use a dado stack, please start using a dado stack." Everyone has their own process though. I am really looking forward to more videos.

I forgot to mention in the video that I first tried using a dado stack but was getting a lot of tear out. Dangit that would have been good to include, but I did try it. The single blade method gave me the cleanest cuts. Good luck on your builds, I’d love to see it when you’re done!

Having fun watching. Kudos to you for trying something new, frames of the doors. Pocket holes are great, but unlike what Kreg thinks, I think they are wrong sometimes. The non moving plywood is correct, but equally correct was the poster talking about the solid wood frames will change, but it's always across the width, so that will exert different forces on your panel. I like Space balls for both solid panels, and Plywood, but for different reasons.

Maybe you do it later on, but is there any reason why you don't screw all the cabinet boxes together once they are on the wall? Seems like it could take care of any slight unevenness in the cleat from box to box. Enjoy your 127 degrees! Where I am it was -47 CELSIUS last week!

Plywood does not expand and contract like solid woods or jointed planks. It’s made with layers whose grain direction is alternated from layer to layer. That makes it extremely stable. This means you can glue it without worrying that it cause issues like solid lumber. Like the build, btw

The plywood and the rail and stiles expand and contract at different rates, that is why you don't want to glue them in. If you use the router bit setup to do it alot of the cheaper sets are true .25 inch slots so if you use veneer plywood you can purchase space balls or panel buddies (i find the rectangular ones easier during glue up for some reason) and that will take care of your expansion and contraction. I built my entire kitchen that way and none of my doors ever rattled or cracked.

Awesome video! I have a question about how you made your faceplates. This is a favorite of mine when making closet systems or book shelves. I love 1x2 face plates. My question is why did you take all the time to pocket hole the frames together? Why not just piece the frames together on the cabinet? Allows for a more custom fit, and if the joints arent perfect some of your favorite wood filler hides all sins. Just curious! Seems like the pre-assembly took a good bit of time.
