This is an excellent video for the following reasons: 1. There is a lot of variety in the shmups styles presented. 2. Gamezof War actually explains why the games are good, he doesn't limit himself to say "cool" or "awesome". 3. The context he provides as how he got the games and what was happening in the industry back then adds depth to the reviews. 4. He presents games that he actually played and finished, lots of reviewers present videos with games they hardly ever played or haven't even finished. 5 .He's an eloquent presenter, and as a real sega fan knows the limitations of the hardware, I'd never heard a better explanation as why the genesis didn't have the best soundtracks compared to the SNES, yet it was perfectly suited for some games with that industrial/electronic sound. This channel deserves way more subscribers, I'm a harcore 16 bit gamer, and this guy knows what he's talking about.

I like your take on this genre. The way how you really get into the stories and not just getting straight to the gameplay. For a shooter that has a strong story only adds to the immersion and really gives everything more purpose. It makes you care more.

What a gem of a video! At 36 years old I am re-discovering the Genesis again. Namely the fantastic and obscure RPGs (whether turn based, tactical and/or action) and Shumps! Thus far I've had the privilege of playing Thunder Force III, Hellfire, Dangerous Seed and M.U.S.H.A. Finally beat them all too and I've been aching to go down this rabbit hole. This video did not disappoint! Just found a copy of GAIARES for a reasonable price (practically in brand new condition and complete with original packing/manual), right at 100 bucks! To hear that it was 80 bucks back when makes me know I'm getting a good deal on it at the moment! Should take around 3 weeks to get into my grubby little hands! With this being said, I've subscribed to your channel. I wrote down all of your recommends and will eventually check out what I can. It's good to know that the one I got, GAIARES, before I saw your video and you speak of it so highly you consider to be the best! Thus far, in my opinion and having not played that one, the Japanese shooter Dangerous Seed has been the best one I've played so far! That's a gem for sure and if you haven't tried it I would recommend a play of it!

What about commenting news, recent pickups, and others, videogame trailer reactions, gameplays.....? I mean, not every video hast to last 30 min... even 5 min video could be fine for commenting news.. please let us know what's your plan for the future of your channel :)

Wow man, you're pretty angry! Did I offend anybody giving a suggestion? I like Josh channel and I actively support it, that's why I would love to watch more videos, but I understand that it takes time to do in depth videos like he does. So I was suggesting to try to include other formats of videos. And I don't mean he would have to quit with this buying guides, because I like them too. Just being more present on youtube as he himself declared months ago. So Gigatywing, don't be so angry, I'm a gamezofwar fan just like you. :)

So happy to see a new video from you!!! This is definitely a genre that I've barely even touched because of one reason: I'm really bad at it! I know I could practice but I get so frustrated that I just stopped playing them! Do you consider Gaiares to be the best of the genre because it's that good or because it's nostalgia talking? Just curious! Ok now after writing all that part of me not playing any of these and you start talking about Arrow Flash and transforming into robot... Now I have to try this one lol! Herzog Zwei now this is one that I could probably get into the most easily! The strategy aspect is more appealing to me... will definitely be on the lookout for this one! Phelios looks nice and it could be one that I try first since it has difficulty levels settings so that it helps me get the hang of that game genre! Ok I know it's not 16 bits era but since I collect only for the PS4 and Vita now, I got Raiden 5 on the PS4 last weekend... I haven't had time to play it yet but I want to try new genre that I'm not used to so I took the chance... it also did helped that it was really cheap! Wow congrats on 10k subs! You really deserve it! You always put out quality videos that are a must to watch in my opinion! Can't wait for the next one! Ok let's end this novel like always: Great video and keep up the good work!

Roaming Dan I think Gaiares is the best because of the mechanics....nostalgia does help, but it really is a damn fine game!! Arrow Flash and Phelios are damn good as well!! Raiden 5 is a great game and will get u into the genre nicely.

Thunder Force 2 was the first shooting game that I had for the Sega Genesis also but at that time I was only like 14 years old so I just remember it always being really hard but I thought it was super cool how you could fly in 8 different directions and the backgrounds in everything were really cool but I just remember it was really hard but I did like it quite a bit.

Bio-Hazard Battle - gets 10 out of 10 for me on the creativity aspect alone. I really like it. Having seen all the shmups on the system, but i find very few of them to be attractive enough to play, unless it has all the elements on point. Zero Wing, Gley Lancer and definitely Eliminate Down, - the one properly metal shooter on the system. Top notch. The obsession of many people with the mushy TF4/Lightening Force - is beyond my understanding. Eliminate Down - offers essentially the same gameplay, but with much better looking levels and superior music.

Not sure I agree that the Genesis had the best shooters as the PC-Engine / Turbo Duo had some amazing shooters that I would place well above Hellfire, Insector X, and even a few of those Renovation shooters you mentioned. I agree there are some of the best 16-Bit shooters of all time on the Genesis, (i.e. Thunderforce 3, Lightning Force), but I personally would place Lords of Thunder, Gates of Thunder, Sapphire, R-Type Complete, Blazing Lasers, Rayxanber III, and even Axley on the SNES above half the games you talked about in this video. Herzog Zwie is a great RTS game, but doesn't belong on this list. Video was worth watching

Difference of opinion, Axelay while good game, I wouldn’t place above any of the Rennovation shooters....Lords of Thunder will be on a Sega CD shooter video in the future..I thought Blazing Lazers was ok...it’s all good tho man, if we all thought the same...the world would be a boring place.

PC Engine is still a better option than Megadrive when it comes to Shmups IF YOU HAVE TO SELECT ONLY ONE SYSTEM. Why is this? Sega's 16 bits has Darius 2, while PC Engine has Gradius I & II, R-type I & II & Super Darius 1 & 2. All of these PC Engine conversions where almost flawless, even compared to the arcade originals. No Technosoft games right, but very solid Technosoft's rip-off AND the famous Soldier Saga, plus Compile games. Bottomline : PC Engine present the best of both Megadrive & Super Famicom worlds in that respect. Its a more complete offer than both others 1-bits system of that era. +GamezOf War Renovation shooters...aren't made by Renovation at all. It was the distributor which bringed differents Japanese releases from Wolfteam / Telenet & various other development studio to the USA. Plus, they are generally competent games but lackluster in many ways, Axelay in the other hand is a work of love from the Team in Konami with will create Treasure few month later. Its obviously a matter of taste, anyone has its own preference no problem, just sayin'!

GamezOf War Yep PC Engine is definitely king of shooters. Genesis definitely has some fantastic ones, just no where near the shear amount and quality of PCE. Nice list for sure tho.

While owning most of the genesis/mega drive games ones i dont own are outlandishly priced, Renovation was actually a publisher they only ever developed a handful of games, im pretty sure Telenet was the main developer.Still kool collection With the PAL counter parts holding significantly more value.
