I had an Orange Krate in 1970 and rode it to school every day. I was in the 5th grade at the time. Everyone thought I had the coolest bike in the neighborhood. Then someone stole it out of our garage.
What a beautiful bike!!!! The Harley Davidson of bikers!!!!! Love em!!!!! The rich kid in town had a orange krate and he never rode it!!!! While the rest of kides rode sears and huffy bikes and jumped ramps and built chopper bikes!!! Rode 15 miles to Sherman !!!!! Played like we were EVEL KNIEVEL !!!!
Those Stingrays were the koolest of the kool. Every kid in my neighborhood had one (I'm 50+), mine was red, and, yes, it chokes me up to look at it. It's a true American icon of industrial design.

Warner BauerThanks for the comment....I had one when i was a kid and of course beat it up pretty bad. So, this is my reprieve - now that I'm into these old Schwinns.
That's the one I wanted back when I was a kid love it as much today as I did back than
I'm 15 and I've recently been getting really into stingrays after buying a reproduction stingray off my friend. It's a little rusty but it's my first and I still love it to death. This is an absolute beautiful bike! I don't have much money right now but probably in my future spare time, ill start putting these beautiful pieces of work back together.
Man that is one awesome bike love it brings back memories of my youth hell yes brother
Excellent survivor !!!
Very Groovy man! I had a single speed. I had to beg for that bad boy for about a year. I drove my mom crazy until she had to give in ! My brother had a Grey ghost, a kid down the block had a 5 speed pea picker, it was very very cool. Those where the only ones in Milan Michigan that I every saw. I put the big tall sissy bar on it for a while, man I had a hard tail chopper with a springer front end. Those were fun times growing up in small town America.Schwinn bikes were the best made bikes. I remember going to Ann Arbor Michigan to the Schwinn dealer to get it, and the test drive around the parking lot, and how lucky I felt that day. I haven't thought about that since that day . WOW!!! What a trip!!! Thanks for taking me back there,What a great feeling!
I've got a '70, but it's no where near yours. I actually ride it once in awhile. It never fails to be a huge attention getter. Thank you for sharing.
Love them schwinns! Bought my son a schwinn runabout with the whitewalls ! SWEET SCHWINNS
I had an Orange Krate back in 1970-71. Thanks for the posting the video. It brings back great memories. By Gregg L. Friedman MD
I had the yellow 5 speed fastback, banana seat, stick shift, and ape hanger handle bars! I always wanted a krate, they look every bit as cool today as they did then. The stingray frame is a work art, timeless, I STILL WANT ONE!

Lemmon Peeler?
Where the hell was I at when these bikes occurred? I was born in 1971. I have *never* seen one of these bikes!
The good old days
Wow! I never knew the Orange Krate had so many accessories! "SWEEEET" No one in our area could afford all that! Thanks for posting
Man, this bike is so awesome!!
These can range from $1000 to $3000 depending on original condition and the bells and whistles that have been added.
I thought this was a cool bike when I was a kid in the 70s. I remember seeing these bikes around town when kids used to be outside more often. Great job on the restoration.

Thanks Mike
thats a dream bike man
Instant return to my childhood memories, thanks
nice bike man. I just bought one. My brother had a 68, and he gave it to me when he got into motor-sickles. I went and refin'd it. Brown of all colors. My new one is a 71. All orig. tires, tubes, cables, everything. It is beautiful. Kinda like yours.
I had a Black Ramhorn. It was so cool. I would peddle so hard that when I shifted into the next gear the front wheel would lift off the ground. Man, that was sweeeeet. Bikes are not like cars though... I tried to ride an Orange Crate 10 years ago. My added weight and height made the ride way different. I will have to love my memory of being 14 and happy on my Schwinn. In fact, as I remember it, the happiest place in the world for this 14 year old was anywhere as long as I was on that bike!
No worries. Nice to hear from a fellow bike enthusiast.
Thanks for nice words. It took alot of time and $ to locate the original accessories to "pimp this ride." The bike is not for sale. If I get enough positive feedback, I'll post videos of some of the other bikes in my collection.
Great Vintage Classic, the Huret Schwinn Approved Speedometer is pretty sweet too, I found some for about $120 each and put them on my 70's Schwinn 10 speeds..
I had one just like it .
Now I see why I was so jealous of my neighbors orange crate .I had a single speed sears bike that sucked
great bike!!!! love it
@meowzers9 Thanks for the compliment. Glad you liked it.
Correction: I LOVE IT. After months of searching I finally found (TODAY!, just bought it at a swap meet) an all original Orange Krate (I think '66, havent decoded it yet). I've already started digging for parts. Thanks for the video, Let's see some more!!!
I had a black Ramhorn with the 5 speed stick shift... I loved that bike....
A heartbreaking thing of beauty. Poetry in motion. I mean, if it was currently in motion. Heh.
4th grade. 1968. The bike!!! Never got one.
Got one for Christmas when a lee lad, but it was unceremoniously stolen by some sneak thief, my grandma bought me a new bike, thanks Granny!
As if these weren't heavy enough😄 very nice bike, now add a windshield and generator!!
Awesome bro...
Dude that is nice, awsome bike. I still have a picture back in the day of my 1972 Orange-Krate with the the very rare rear disc brake and I remember having the white-letter Gripper-slik rear tire also.
In Brooklyn NY in 1971 my brother had a Peapicker Krate. We'd grab the back of the city busses bumper & they'd pull us around. We drove them like maniacs in the city streets weaving in & out of traffic. We'd build ramps out of plywood & jump as far as we could. All without the stupid government sponsored helmits. True freedom! The bike was made in America, tough as nails & had a lifetime warranty!!!
Amazing love it I have a68
awsome bike dude
Omg, that is the business, I had a Schwinn stingray bk in 1969 I was 11yrs old I begged my dad with tears 😢 to buy me that model what was it like $35 more he wouldn't do it but the next wk he bought a 1970 Buick Electra 225 I was livid ... lol
I had a Stingray when I was younger. Got it around '77 - '78 so it would have been secondhand. Wasn't as decked out as the one in the video. I don't remember it having a springer front end, but it did have the smaller front wheel. Don't remember what happened to it as I ended up in the hospital with a head injury one day after riding it. I miss that bike, head injury aside, it was a lot of fun.
very cool man. cheers
@centervilletn thanks bro. Stay tuned, I am going to post a vid of another from my collection.
Mind. Blown.
@rageofalphawolf Yeah, the '71 did not come with the disc brake - and I wanted it to be original. I have several other impressive bikes in my collection and will post another one soon.
Ya, you did that brother! I'm working on a Point Beach Cruiser.
Nut buster shifter
Nice bike, it deserves a video that's in focus.
I had this same bike in 1968! Damn do I wish i had it now! You've got the accessories too. I didn't have all the extra stuff. This is awesome !!! And made in Chicago too!
@ENCO12357 Thanks bro. That bike would be worth some serious coin today.
daym sooo niiiiice 👍
Remember r&s strauss stores had these new for $129.99 in 1970. They had all of them, grey ghost apple krates, lemon peelers... now, like yours in that cond...$3500. Just look on ebay

According to the numbers at an inflation calculator site, that was the equivalent of $ 900 today's money.
Sweet.!
Bad ass 👍
The lock you have is very easy to pick, i really wouldnt use it. Sweet Bike!
DUDE I WANT TO BUY THAT!!!!!!!
Tool Bags can be found on E-bay...though they dont come up that often. Bat holders are EXTREMELY rare and hard to find. I paid big bucks for an NOS one at a bike swap meet. Thanks for the comments.
Where do you get those special things like the shifter, signal things , and all that?
Nice, i had an Orange Krate but mine had a silver/white seat with the orange stripe, do you have the front shock on the seat? Later models didn't as the rear seat bar would break, it happened to me, must weigh at least 50 lbs
Thumbs Up for a Like !
where did you get the brake lights? and direction lights?
I love this !!
Mine had a knobby-- beautiful, did that have the spring seat post?? they had a recall on that
It really depends on the year, condition, and the "bells and whistles" it has on it. If you can send me a picture I can give you a pretty good idea of the value.

Show me the original serial number cause now schwinn does makes a new duplicate of the orange crate ,for around 800 dllrs ,I'm not doubting you have the real one ,but my nephew had gotten ripped off by buying the reproduction at the swap meet, saying when sold to him it was new old stock but wasnt.
Thats my favorite of all the krates. I have 26 Schwinn collection. Thats amazing excellent shape. Thanks for sharing. I'd be an interested buyer but, I'm sure that you wouldnt sell & had offers. 👍👀
@timpriddy73 1,001 uses :)
thats kinda sweet lol
Dont know anyone personally...but there's always E-bay. Best regards.
I had one back then-- does that have the spring in the seat post? mine did then I guess they had a recall and used a standard seatpost as the rear bar used to break with the spring post-- at least mine did and the bike shop gave me the parts

Black Buick The spring post was the first six months of production in 1968. I have my original 68 crate, I was 14 when I Pulled out of the show room window at my fathers dealership
OMG! Where did you get the tool bag and Bat holder?!! Please I Neeed them both!
Hi there,so cool Schwinn congratulation,i'm looking to found one but here in switzerland it's more than f... impossible
@HOTRODLED This is purely a decorator piece. Impossible to find an original lock like this though.
SWEEEEEET
You can buy the bat holder for $80.00 from Memory Lane Classics. I picked one up when I visited there last month.
when more is good and to much is just right
wheelie bar?
In 1971 I was 9, & wanted a Krate in the worst way! My cousin had a 5 speed regular Stingray, the shifter was the coolest. Got to ride the Stingray, but never got my Krate. I guess I can understand, there were 4 of us kids & $130.00 for a bike was a lot of coin. I settled for a green banana seat bike from a department store. I had a blast on that bike tho.

Mike Slomski We are exactly the same age. I was the lucky kid who had one of these bikes - but beat it up pretty bad. Later in life I became enthused with old Schwinns and got another one.

@@Schwinn2win well, here we are in 2023, and I got my orange krate! It's a new reproduction, but I'm OK with that! Almost 61years old and finally got one!
Do u sell these bikes?
Man never saw one with all the options!
I still have mine in which I saved up for. Plus, I still have the sales receipt $74.83 I was 14 yrs. old. Where can I get it restored? It’s in better than average condition.

If you still have it I would be interested in buying it. It’s best to leave it unrestored. You can take it apart to repack the bearings. If there’s rust you can go to Home Depot and buy evapo rust. Let the parts soak over night. Give it a good polish with some mothers and you should be good. If you plan on polishing/waxing the bike be very careful with the chain guard. A lot of people have buffed off the lettering trying to polish it even just cleaning it.
What was the selling price in 71? What is the value today?

How much are Stingrays in well used condition now? Yours is probably worth a few thousand I am sure. My unlce has about a dozen classic Schwinns hanging in his man cave. I am thinking about asking him to sell me one. He is in his 60's now.
