Renewable Energy Engineer & Off Grid Expert Jesse Gorter explains how you can select the best Solar PV Panel for your system.
How to choose the best solar panel in 4 steps:
1. TECHNOLOGY: Which kind of technology is available on the market, and what kind of efficiencies can you expect
2. PERFORMANCE: How can you distinguish among several panels which ones are the best, and which figures should you look for
3. PRICES: How can you easily compare prices among solar panels, and what kind of warranties can you expect
4. TIPS: Overcast performance, budget-smart decisions, and bi-facial solar pv panels

Absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much! I’m looking to get a solar system that I can take to France and have by our tent. But possibly at a later date put up on a converted van. This was so helpful - I feel like I need to study the different ones for sale but with more knowledge 🙌

Thank you very much. Currently in the process of upgrading campervan with 200Ah lithium heated batteries from battleborn, victron mppt 100/50, and finally orion-tr smart 12/12V-30A. Already purchased receiving next week. Solar panels primary charging method hoping to make this purchase early next week. Huge learning curve. Heated batteries as I am in Canada and the camper full time. Also design is modular in that batteries and solar panels will move from rv to a 28 foot sail boat. I will keep you posted with my progress. Your videos are extremely informative and straightforward thank you.

Living on amp hrs from a battery why is it that the bigger the voltage of the pannel gives you lower amps? I wire for the highest voltage in series to the max voltage of the charge controller and it's a mppt and did notice it changing the low amperage and doubling it back to the battery. Which is great but shouldn't a 300 watt pannels at least put out more than 8 amps?

will 2 12 volt solar panels wired in series produce 24 volts?

Please, I am trying to get a fact. Is it that having lower rated panels will produce better than higher rated ones.. eg having single 300watts panel and having 2pieces of 150watts which one is better in terms of better output production... Curious to know. Thanks

Jesse, this is completely off topic, but your voice is really close to Patrick Stewart. With a little practice you could totally spoof him. Enjoy now knowing that. Also thanks for all the specific solar info!

Hey Robert! Haha that is very interesting to hear, thanks for letting me know. I guess I can start to practice my "Engage!" phrase and start mixing it in with future videos. You are the first to tell me that I sound like Stewart: Many have suggested Arnold Swarzenegger, though I like your suggestion better to be honest :)

Hi, love the video and the opportunity to learn. If you have time and if others are interested, could you look at a case study. Specifically, if I wanted to power my electric car ( say Tesla) and use it every day for 50km, what would be the optimum system. Thanks

Do you think it's a good idea to use bifacial panels on residential metal roof top? My system is 14.8KW, should I choose a light colour for the roof to get the most reflection back to the panels? Thank you.

Hi Jesse. Love y our videos! I am building an off-grid solar panel array for the top of the van my wife and I have just ordered (Ford Transit high-top extended van). I am wondering if it's worth it to build a system to move the panels in at least one axis, possibly two, to track the sun, probably based on the GPS coordinates and date/time. I know the improvement might be around 10%, but I am still not sure. Thanks!!!

Thank you for your feedback, it is good to hear you appreciate the videos. It sounds like you are starting a nice new adventure there, very nice! Tracking might get you better yields, though adds to the complexity of your system. I think it is a matter of personal preference: If it was my van, and if there would be enough room, I would probably get high-performing [mono] panels. Just add more solar compared to the tracking option, and you have a solid solar system. TIP: Consider multiple [smaller] MPPT charge controllers which might allow you to squeeze maximum performance out of each panel. Have fun! Jesse

@@SolarSolution Thank you for the reply! It does make sense to use more panels, but I'm trying to get around 1000w to charge my 24v 280aH LifePo battery bank, and to do so, it seems I have to put the entire array higher than my Maxx Fans. Since they're already going to be in a frame above the roof, I figured I might consider pivoting it with linear actuators. May I ask one more question? You mention using multiple MPPT controllers. I will research this. However, if I have five 250w 24v panels, would you suggest 3 controllers (two panels each) or am I going down the wrong path (as I haven't researched it yet). Thanks!

Hi Jesse, im a british expat living in the Philippines, our family live out in the rice territories/countryside here, we want to set up a bitcoin a BIG solar power mining set up out in the countryside, and as we would be dealing with solar panels we would then like to set up a solar panel business providing power to farmers too but thats a different discussion :) . My question is, do you have any tips or recommendations for type of solar power set up we should use for the solar powered bitcoin mining company? Many thanks.

I want flexible panels on my 36’ sailboat. I think I could lay them on existing surfaces without building supports, and also reposition them from time to time. Unfortunately I hear that flexible panels just don’t last. Is that so?

You say higher-efficiency panels are always better and are your #1 priority. I'm confused with that blanket assertion. If I compare a 350W low-efficiency panel vs a 350W high-efficiency panel, assuming all else is the same, they'll produce the same 350W peak power. The main difference is size of the panels - low-efficiency panels are bigger, so need more surface area. Unless you're space-constrained, that's not a problem. Yes, higher-efficiency/premium panels will likely have slightly better specs, but from the price differentials I see, doesn't make sense to pay a premium. I'd likely add another panel for insurance - maybe another ~$300. Major considerations for me are price and aesthetics (the all-black panels look much better even though they typically have a modest performance penalty). With ever-lower panel prices for residential PV, hard to think paying a premium for current top-tier panels is a worthwhile investment. The better investment seems to be high-quality inverters/batteries.
