Ultimate Off-Road Vehicles: Mason Motorsports 4WD Trophy Truck

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

For just over 50 years off-road racing has been the ultimate proving ground for automotive technology. If it can live through the brutality of off-road racing on road use is a cakewalk. 4 Wheel drive technology has never been able to survive the combination of extreme suspension travel and the unforgiving brutality of the terrain. Now Mason Motorsports has come up with a new platform that combines suspension, portal hubs, differentials, a Dougans big block 8 stack engine and a completely purpose built Mason-Matic trophy truck transmission. 4 Wheel drive trophy trucks have won Laughlin Desert Challenge, Silver State 300, The Tijuana Challenge, Vegas to Reno, Parker 425, King of the Hammers, but now they head to the roughest off-road race of them all “The Great American Off-Road Race” The BFgoodrich Mint 400. If a 4-Wheel drive trophy Truck wins The Mint 400 it changes everything, proving the platform as dominant even at the roughest off-road races. Pay attention, history is about to be made. Either the 4 Wheel drive Mason becomes the weapon of choice or the proven 2 Wheel drive trophy truck platform remains king! It all comes down to the 2020 BFGoodrich Tires Mint 400 - March 3rd - 8th Las Vegas, NV

    I have been screaming that portals make a difference. In 03 i was working on a humvee in the army and was shown what they do. It really helps with the travel. Then what has happened with the drivetrain tech before the portals (trans Tcase) is amazing. WE ARE AT ANOTHER LEVEL!! its amazing.

    Portal hubs do nothing for wheel travel, the spindle can be whatever size you want. They only used a portal hub so the differential and axleshafts would last longer. Put the gearing in the hub and the differential and axleshafts don't have to carry 100% of the torque load...but it has nothing to do with wheel travel.

    @@justinunderwood5040 4WD spindles and A-arms can be made to put the axleshaft in any position you want between the UCA and LCA. You want the axleshafts to be right next to the UCA? Sure, it can be done easily. You want them right next to the LCA? That's easy too. All it takes is loading programs up in your CNC machine. Literally the only thing a portal axle does in that regard is relocate the wheel centerline further down from the axleshaft. Think about it. Pause the video at 3:42 and look at them. If the wheel came out where the axleshaft was, what difference would that make in travel? None. What difference would it make as far as the axleshaft geometry? None. Because the axleshaft is still in the same place. All it would take to get that exact axleshaft/UCA/LCA geometry with a non-portal spindle is to put the wheel hub where the axleshaft meets the spindle, and that's not a difficult thing to do at all. Portal hubs are great, you just have to understand that they do nothing for geometry or travel in a trophy truck. They help by getting the torque off the axleshafts. A trophy truck doesn't really benefit from additional clearance, but they provide that as well.

    @@Skinflaps_Meatslapper yes bud, what I was meaning is that you can tun a shorter axle (not by much) and lighter axle (if you dare). Its the placement of being lined up over the center of the wheel along with the fact that its less stress on the joints that "allows" a more durable travel with the axle. That is what I meant when I said helps with the travel. The UCA and LCA dictate travel, everything else limits it by many different factors.

  • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper

    @Skinflaps_Meatslapper

    4 жыл бұрын

    But the axle length remains the same whether it's a portal or direct drive, and the placement of where the axle interfaces with the spindle can be done whether you're running portal or direct drive hubs. So, the portal hubs don't change any aspect of the axle's travel or limits thereof. It only changes how much torque the axle needs to transmit.

    @@EL-Dude-A-Rino-0.69 It has a ton of rocky stretches and as a result the tire integrity is often the biggest limiting factor. 4WD will determine whether it'll help on tire life more than anything. Baja is just Baja, you can't really compare it to anything else, and until it wins there it'll be considered niche and unproven until a win is made. Also, until a 4WD finishes consecutively in top spots, it won't be the "next big thing" for trophy trucks. Myself, I'm all for it if they can get the same kind of front travel as 2WD setups, because then an IRS setup would begin to look feasible.
