Ultimate NICARAGUAN STREET FOOD Tour of Mercado Central in León, Nicaragua!!
🇳🇮CARLOS: carlos.tapia28
🌎 MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG: davidsbeenhere.com/
My adventures in León, Nicaragua continued with an adventure in the local central market! Come with me as I try Nicaraguan street food in the Mercado Central in León, Nicaragua!
My guide Carlos and I would be checking out everything there, from the food to the clothing to the produce, and everything in-between!
👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: teespring.com/stores/davids-been-here
Right away, we came across produce vendors selling potatoes, bananas, papayas, green peppers, pineapple, cassava, and starfruit. They all looked fantastic!
It was 7:30 in the morning, so all of the vendors were starting to put their fresh produce out. I tried a spicy pepper from another vendor. It was good but the heat built over time!
Elsewhere, we got a fresh fruit cocktail made with fresh pineapple, banana, papaya, and watermelon, along with juice! It was nice and refreshing after the chili!
Another customer let me try a bit of her cacao-based drink with cinnamon. It was amazing and so chocolatey. I really liked the cinnamon and how frothy it was!
Next was sopa de leche, a custard-like sweet served on a banana leaf. It was served hot and super sweet! It reminded me a lot of flan! It was really delicious and rich and fell apart in my mouth!
At another vendor, I tried a bit of cacao powder with corn flour. I also tried jicaro seeds, rice, and cinnamon ground into a powder. I liked it, but the cacao was better!
Next, we saw some chicha de maiz rojo and walked past some Captain America and Spider-Man pinatas before finding some smoked cheese at a stall called Ena Lucia. It was a thick, white cheese! They grill the entire block of cheese!
Then, I had some smoked cheese with chili at the same vendor’s stall. It was smoky, spicy, and crumbly! Next was a corn tamale with cheese balls and tortillas.
I loved the combination. I loved the cheese. It was nice and dense. After that, we came across a breakfast vendor selling eggs, gallo pinto, maduro, chicken stew, beef stew, and more.
I was getting full already, so we skipped the breakfast food for now and tried some fried chips.
In the meat section, we saw chicharron, fried calf, and Nicaraguan blood sausage called moronga. The moronga was huge and cost roughly $0.80. It contained rice inside and was like a dense, iron-rich bread and blood patty. I’d never seen a blood sausage like this!
In the butcher section, we saw some fish vendors selling red snapper and catfish. Everything was so friendly. There were also live crab, baho, and lots of meat!
Outside, we found more vegetables and clothing, including baseball and soccer jerseys. I tried a sweet corn flan that was pink!
Next, the vendor put some corn pudding and amotta de atole with corn and pineapple in my hand for me to try. I liked it even more than the other one!
From there, we walked to Cosa de Horna Doña Adilia, a 105-year-old bakery that sells sopa de leche, quesadillas, empanadas, perrereque, and pan de arroz.
We tried one of each, starting with the quesadilla. It was very different from the quesadillas I’m familiar with, and was basically cornbread with cheese inside. It tasted like Brazilian pao de queijo.
The pan de arroz didn’t contain cheese and had a crispy, golden brown exterior. The sopa de leche was amazing! I loved the flan-like texture. The empanada was very bready and had some cheese in it.
The perrereque was like a sweet, fluffy cornbread. Then, we went to a shop where they make Leon enchiladas, which they make from fried corn dough.

Nicaragüense aquí, i loved the video, the fact that you can understand perfectly everything in the country despite talking another language, one of the best Nicaragua related video that is in another language
David - You are a big hit there in Nicaragua, I can tell. They love your sense of humor and praise of their food spoken in Spanish no less! I love it too since I'm trying to learn the language.
Wow your bringing back my memories Leon was the last stop of my 2 week journey in traveling through Central America back in Sept2018 I only stayed like 3 days but I remember walking through the streets and I went to this market People were so nice and I tried some good food. This city and nightlife was so good. Good times 🇳🇮 🔥
That sope de leche does look a lot like flan, and I bet it tastes incredible. David's pretty brave to try those hot peppers first thing in the morning!🌶🌶
I love David said never throw any food. Respect

Hi David! My Mother is from Nicaragua, you made me want to learn more about the Nicaragua. You absorb the culture and get the full experience when you visit a country. I would love to travel and enjoywhat the world has to offer. Stay safe and God bless.
I love visiting markets!! Best way to appreciate the culture of a country. I love this one...it reminds me of Mexico and Venezuela👍👍
@Davidbeenhere I absolutely love this video you unlock childhood memories💙🇳🇮
I’m Mexican-American and I have a friend whose parents are from Nicaragua and through him I got a taste of real Nica food. By FAR my favorite Nicaraguan food is the Nacatamale, I like it better than Mexican tamales. My favorite is the Estelian Nacatamale, it’s stuffed with chicken instead of pork and it’s from Esteli and Ocotal, Northern Nicaragua. The story of the Nacatamale begins with the Nicarao people.
These videos in Nicaragua are very well done. Love your hosts. You will see that a lot of the foods and treats are quite similar in south and central America as well as in the Caribbean (heard you mention Trinidad curry) , but prepared differently and called by different names. I really wished that you were given a chance to visit the markets in Trinidad. Maybe on another trip, eh? I noticed that the butchers were all women - no men? WOW. Anyhoo, great job as usual. My stomach gets full by just watching you sample all the foods some of which for health reasons (diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure) I can't have but I enjoy watching you having a good time. Keep well and stay safe.🇹🇹🇨🇦

Dave, From Cubana en Korea KZreadr. I heard of a place called Chontales where they make the world renowned, " Queso Chontaleño". Do you have time to make a video.
Omg wow the food
SOS beautiful Nicaragua
Ok I’m addicted 😂
Hello from Long beach ca
Hello. Was the cocoa powder unsweetened? Greetings from Turkey, Claudia.
Cómo hace para comer tanto 😅
I wish you could do that with a ghost pepper.
You didn't try the chicha. Chicha is delicious. 😢😢😊😊
Mantap 👍
How safe is it in nicaragua 🇳🇮 for tourists

This dude can eat 😂
John 3:16-17 King James Version 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
David, i suggest you carry a small face towel with you to wipe the sweat. So you don't have to wipe it off with your bare hands. Hands you are also licking the food off.😅
david, any plans on coming to india this year?
**cries on a different country**
Very nice that you visited the country and tasted its food and were well-received by the people. At least you make an effort to keep your mouth closed while eating... Unlike that other annoying little bug-eyed chap Mark Wein..
It's crazy they serve food on leaves lol!!! That would get the health department on you in the US!!!

The only thing I don't like is that you shared the food with Carlos. You should buy him his own meal.
I hope this guy at lease pays for the food .
@ 2:43 I can understand the reason why you need your host to hold the food so you can sample it, but it looks wrong a lot. Try to sample the food with your host especially when you visit other countries other than Florida.
Your last name is Hoffman, have you tried LSD ?
