Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today we will take a look at the best midi controllers for pedalboards. On my table I have the Morningstar MC6 Pro, Morningstar MC8, Morningstar MC6 mk1, Source Audio Soleman, Hotone Ampero Control and the Xsonic Xtone Pro, but I will also take a look at the Mastermind LT, Morningstar MC6 mk2 and the newest released Mortix.
Which one is the best midi controller for controlling pedals? Which midi controller is the best in the music studio to control your DAW? Which one is more suitable for live music gigs? And most importantly, which one is the best for you? Also, how does the Morningstar MC6 mk1 compare with the MC6 mk2? We are going to find out all of that in today's comparison.

    Thanks for the comparison! Morningstar Engineering controllers (MC6 & MC6, etc) ship from Singapore. Over the last 3 years I have ordered 4 for various applications. My most recent order was for an MC 6 to act as a remote footswitch for Ableton keyboard shortcuts (a non-midi communication via USB). I live in California. I placed the order Sunday night, received acknowledgment that it had shipped within 20 minutes and received the MC 6 before noon on Tuesday. Free shipping and no sales tax! Best customer service on the planet!! Obviously, I HIGHLY recommend them!

    Great video Ale :) It's worth mentioning that the Morningstar doco and youtube guides are very polished and thorough. I keep discovering new things I can do with my MC6 Pro. I've just set up my Boss FS7 as an aux switch (for bank changes) - next step is to configure the expression presets (so the expression pedal can control any of my midi devices dynamically). That WIDI controller is also on the list! I think my guitar is feeling lonely haha.

    Agreed! There are several tutorials and the manual is constantly being updated. However, I must admit that I admire devices that do not require me to go through a manual at all, and sometimes having several video tutorials could be a sign of being a bit convoluted. I'm just playing devil's advocate here... Morningstar is top of their game... but there is always room for improvements, I guess. I think you said in another comment, you've got the pro? Let me know if you struggle for the expression pedal... I do that dynamic trick all the time. The CME Widi is a funny little device which I wish was invented several years ago to solve this spaghetti madness that I call my project studio. Bless ;)

    Thank you so much for this video. I was on the verge of purchasing the hotone thinking that I could live with the minimalism, but didn't realize that the display never changed back to the bank. I think I've decided to save up for the mc6 pro. Now I just have to find an extra 2 inches for the extra depth on my board. 🙏👍

    I am so glad the video was useful. This is exactly the kind of info I wanted to share out there, as I have purchased the Ampero Control myself just to feel disappointed after a few hours of use because of its display. The MC6 Pro is a great device... but mind that apart for the extra inches of depth, you may need to think about the extra height as well... if you use a lot the pedals on the second raw, you may need risers. Currently, I am also liking the Disaster Area DMC3XL, far less capable than Morningstar, but very compact, and somehow easy to use once you get your head around (I still have the MC6 Pro in studio though). I hope to see you around again ;)

    Very impressive and highly informative review - thank you! Subbed immediately, no matter what your other content is, because work like yours needs more recognition. The content comes across as „scripted“ in terms of the quality and conciseness, despite it obviously not being scripted. Now about the devices: Which ones have loud and clank switches, and which ones are quiet enough for a solo acoustic performance in a (sometimes) quiet setting?

  • @AleSuggests

    @AleSuggests

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much for subbing and for your kind words, they are much appreciated! Switch noise chart: - Morningstar MC6 Pro (least noisy, and winning by a landslide) - Hotone Ampero Control - Soleman (noisiest of the bunch) You could develop a technique to make the Morningstar MC6 Pro absolutely silent, as it uses "soft touch switches". The Soleman and Hotone are "hard" meaning you will always hear the click sound no matter how softly you try stomping them. Unfortunately, I don't have the other two Morninstars with me at the moment. The MC8 should also have the soft touch switches, but I do not recall about the MC6 mk1. You could email Morningstar to double-check, and I am sure they'll reply you fast enough. I hope this helps... all the best for your choice and I hope to see you around ;) Ale

    @@AleSuggests You are a very kind spirit to have actually followed up on my question - and so thoroughly, at that. Thank you! :-) Happy to now know the Morningstar MC6 Pro will be my only choice, at least in the bunch you tested (and the others with „silent“ switches are ancient and clunky, at least as far as my market survey shows so far). Now I‘ll just rest easy till my twin toddlers need a bit less round-the-clock care so I can get back to buying - and especially using(!) - gear. ;-)

    Great video - thanks very much for the information and taking the time to go through everything so thoroughly. I'm looking to use a MIDI Pedalboard to not only send MIDI CC and PC, but also send note data in order to play bass lines/trigger samples on my keyboard. Do you know if I'd be able to connect something like a Line 6 FBV3 or Behringer FCB1010 to one of these MIDI pedals to "increase" the number of available footswitches? Thanks in advance.

  • @AleSuggests

    @AleSuggests

    5 ай бұрын

    I'm glad the video was useful. I've never used the controllers to send note data, but I cannot see why you would not be able to connect a Behringer FCB1010 into any of the controllers of the video, because the Beheringer has got midi out 5 din and all the controllers I showcased in the video do have midi in ports. The Line 6 FBV3 is a different story though, because I believe it has only got the USB port... so IF it's USB class compliant, you could still possibly connect it to the USB port of the MC6 Pro, but the other controllers will not support this feature, only the MC6 Pro. If you want my honest opinion... I don't know your setup, so take this with a pinch of salt, but if I were you, I would separate things up. I would program the MC6 Pro (or whatever controller you decide to buy) to send Midi CC/PCs only, and then the FCB1010 to send midi notes only. Programming them separately may be a lot simpler. You could still chain the two devices, so that: FCB1010 midi out -> MC6 Pro midi in -> MC6 Pro midi out -> keyboard midi in .... and the keyboard will still see the midi messages of both controllers... or you could use a midi merger box if your keyboard has only got one midi in. Just download the FCB1010 pdf manual and make sure that it can send midi notes before you buy it, and also download and install the Behringer editing software so you are sure it is still supported on your computer, as it is a bit of an old device. Also check out the Keith McMillen Midi devices (Softstep, etc) they may be quite a bit smaller than a FCB1010, and they are velocity sensitive... but mind if these have only a USB port if I remember correctly, so once again go for the MC6 Pro if you end up grabbing a Softstep. I hope this helps, and thanks for passing by ;)

    Hey, nice thoughts.... so: - M-Wave Choccolate: did not make it to be in the video because it does not have any midi In/Out ports - Blackstar Live Logic: I considered it, but from what I've read it does not seem to send multiple midi messages with one press. This was a "must have" feature to be part of the review (otherwise there would have been countless single message pedalboards to consider, such as Behringer BCB1010, Midi Mouse, Basilisk, etc) - Pirate Midi Bridge 4/6: I did not know the device by the time of the review. It intrigues me and if I ever shoot a part 2 of the video I may include it You are right, though... I was meant to include Choccolate and Blackstar as possible alternatives... but... simply put... I forgot 😅 Thanks so much for passing by ;)

    I went with the mc6 pro for the better/newer software and the full featured Morningstar software vs other options, plus the relay switching. Also because it was the only one actually available from Morningstar now. It’s my first attempt with midi but I have a bunch of gear with midi features I’m looking forward to messing with. I just bought a used midi matrix to control two Mesa heads (a markV and a Fillmore), or I have a tc-50 that’s midi capable. I have a plethora 5 that I want to control as well. I may consider adding a loop switcher as well to control a drawer full of pedals but that’s TBD. Also considering a straight to mixer solution with plethora plus a tech 21 Psa 2.0 but will wait for that for now.

    Yup, you have a lot of midi going on, I'm sure the Morningstar MC6 Pro won't disappoint you. Just be prepared for a steep learning curve, so try to be patient, as midi programming can be tedious... when it'll be time to shop around for a loop switcher, I'd say look into Disaster Area... they are quickly becoming my new favourites, and they're products are always available. I agree, although if you have the midi controller permanently installed into a busy pedalboard, it is not always possible to hook it up to a computer. For the record, I am currently rocking a Disaster Area DMC3XL on my gigging board, and although it is FAR less powerful than a Morningstar (no software, no double tap, no multiple messages, no relay), but I still edit faster, I overcome those limitations in a creative way, and I end up playing way more music... and without even touching a computer. On the other hand, every time I hook up my MC6 Pro to the laptop, I end up updating its FW, getting lost programming, and colour-coding everything... the time flies without even touching the instrument. In my own "real" world (rehearsals, gigs, tours) editing on board is needed. For studio work, instead, Morningstar editor all the way. P.s. I know bluetooth midi and iPad app exist... but again... still not a fast enough workflow in a real world scenario Everything is a personal opinion, of course Thanks for passing by ;)

    The main question is. What can the others do that the hotone can't? I mean, the ampero control is 100€, Soleman 260€ and the others even more.

  • @AleSuggests

    @AleSuggests

    5 ай бұрын

    The Ampero Control is the first controller I bought, and I was so sure it would be more than enough. But then... how do you know what are you switching on and off without a dedicated screen? Say you have just 10 banks of 4 presets. How do you remember which is which? You cannot even stick some tape to the side of the switches, because as soon as you change the bank, the switch order changes. Another thing that I missed with the Ampero was the lack of a companion software, yes it's got its iPad app, but it's not easy to backup/restore, copy/paste presets, and say that one day they stop supporting the app? So, even though I wanted to love the Ampero and I prefer its smaller form factor, it turned out that it wasn't enough for me, and I am confident many would share the same opinion. On the paper, the Ampero is a great and capable device, but the devil is in the details I suppose.... those details that usually us as musicians work so hard on when creating songs? Those kind of details that I appreciated more on other devices such as Soleman and Morningstar. IMHO, Midi is already a cumbersome and outdated tech to be dealt with cumbersome HW. Anyhow, if they update the Ampero Control in a v2.0 with a better display, I'll most likely give it another shot. I hope you found the video useful, and hopefully I'll see you around ;)

Mind that I never tried the MC8's white text over black background, but the MC8 I had was really tough to read when standing, the MC6 Pro quite a bit less difficult.
