I just bought the new 16 inch MacBook Pro M1 Max thinking it would be the best laptop ever, but I was slightly let down. It's just too heavy in my opinion. I keep finding myself missing my old 15" Retina MacBook Pro, for the keyboard, display, trackpad, and overall build. The new 16" screen notch drives me insane as well, with half of my menu bar icons covered and the only way to access them is by using my second monitor. But even still, it is fast as hell which I love.

I've just bought my first Apple, a 14' M1 Pro. I got it a few cents cheaper as it was marked as an opened box and without any visual usage marks. It had 3 cycles though. Is there anything you can recommend me to check or to take a detailed look at except the visual expection, keyboard and trackpad testing? Any interesting software than I can run, like diagnostics? Thank you in advance!

I needed to replace my 2013 Macbook Air (4GB/128) because the USB-A ports had gotten intermittant. Over the last 9 years the Air did everything I needed it to with all the ports it came with (particularly with the SD card slot for expanded storage of video files). The M1 Macbook Pro (16GB/1TB) was what I chose and couldn't be happier, even though I paid list price. I'm 77 so this is likely my last computer I'll ever buy. It has all the ports, mag safe, great screen, AND FANS that I can ramp up with Macs Fan Control so I don't have to live with100°C CPU temps!

I have a 2011 Air (4GB/128GB) which is too old although I can still use Safari (with 3 tabs) to watch KZread. I'm in doubt to buy a basic Air M2 for my very basic needs o a Pro 14 due to a wonderful screen and 16GB/512GB minimum ram-space storage. I think I will wait until the presentation of M2 Pro 14 (maybe in November or in March?)

I definitely love the m2 air but i still say that the base 14” pro is a much better value. Especially since it can be had for like 16/1700 on sale right now which is about the same as a similarly spec’d air. But has a much more powerful chip, active cooling, more ports, and much better screen

The screen, 16GB of RAM, and 512 GB SSD were what pushed me towards the 14” - I specced out the M2 Macbook Air and with the same specs the price wasn’t too far off just getting the 14”, and you can’t make the screen on the M2 better, so it was a no brainer for me.

I have an M1 MBA and I've been trying to find an excuse to upgrade, but I can't. First, I still can't decide between these two devices, but if I had to I keep leaning toward the M2 Air, and then the only REAL improvement I'd see in upgrading is magsafe, which would be a big deal to open up another port, but not enough to justify the money to upgrade. So every time I end up just sticking with the M1 Air. I bought it to be a secondary computer, and it's become my primary one.

  • @LoLStaticX

It was very hard for me to choose between these two, but I ended up picking a refurbished 14´ base model, which cost me just a little bit more than a M2 Air with 16GB o RAM and 512 of storage. I think that with the actual prices it's very hard to justify the M2 Air over the M1 Pro.

I ultimately chose the base midnight m2 air over the m1pro as a university student. I do keep my laptops for a while, and I'm able to make program some IOS mock applications, mid-level video editing, business related inquires etc. Yes, I am aware of the SSD issue but it's blown out of proportion, although I wish Apple didn't make this cost cutting move. Sometimes though, I do wish I upgraded to 16GB ram but alas, I am a proud first time MacBook owner :)

Second choice would be the 14in MBP thanks to it's similar benefits besides the larger screen. I also would not call the MBP screen the best screen in any laptop but it's in the top 5 for sure.

  • @enolin

Thanks for the video! I'm not sure what to do because I will use it for everyday tasks but also for some video editing about family trips. I guess I need a good performer in terms of RAM. I am not sure that I need more than 256 Gb of space as I do have some external disks. I am wondering if I should buy the Air M2 with 16Gb/256Gb, or the M1 Pro with 16Gb/512Gb. Because I understand that the 256Gb SSD on the MacBook Air M2 is slower (?) And here in Switzerland I have a price difference of 300 Swiss Francs between both models, and it's pretty important. Since I have not had a decent keyboard on a laptop for at least 8 years - I would have to say my favorite feature of the M2 MBA is how beautiful it is to type on. Makes me want to comment more often - like now... Of course - the trackpad/screen/speed/form factor/etc - does not hurt either (I thought hard on getting the Pro as well - just didn't need the extra performance & cost & weight)

Great vid as always Luke! I purchased my MBP M1Pro (base) when the other option was the M1 Air. For me whilst the M1 Air was tempting given its crazy figures at launch, I waited to see the new MBP offerings which were rumoured. I'm glad I did, M1 Pro MBP has blown me away with its super solid performance, amazing screen, ports (all of which I use) and its ability to link to my 4K tv is just awesome. I do think you are right though, people really do need to sit and think of their real world use when making a decision between the M2 Air and the MBP M1Pro. I know of a few people who have bought the most expensive MBP M1's and they barely tax its intended capability when an M1 Air would've more than sufficed. Anyways again great vid! The keyboards are basically on par. As for the portability, maybe ask some people you know if any of them own either machine. If you hold the machines yourself, you'll be able to make a decision that would satisfy you. For me, the extra weight of the 14 wasn't really noticeable over the M2 Air. I'm not particularly strong either. You only really notice a change when comparing them to the 16 inch model.

If you need more than 16 GB of RAM the M2 Air (8 CPUs, 8GPUs, 27 GB RAM, 512GB SSD) has the same price of the Mac Book Pro 14" base model, which cost roughly 360/400£ extra in UK with 32 GB of RAM depending if you have student discount or not. Currently I have a base M1 Mac mini that can handle Windows 11 on Parallel with good performance, but it is a bit slow with transition ( ex. Task View) which I think depends on the limited amount of RAM. I have noticed the Fan is always spinning at 1,700 rpm ( checked with Parallel ToolBox) but is very silent with temp around 35 Degrees Celsius. Do you think the Mac Book Air M2 with the above configuration can handle this Task without overheating or is better go with the Mac Book Pro 14" base model?

I recently made this choice and I started out with the M2 Air, but then switched to the 14" Pro. As a non-pro, the M2 Air actually fit my strict needs better, but a few factors made me make the switch: - 1) I needed the larger screen -- I was coming from an older 15" MBP, and while the difference wasn't that drastic on paper, I could definitely feel the loss of space. - 2) I needed more on-board storage and wanted more RAM, and while I could have just upgraded the Air, that got the price uncomfortably close to the discounted 14", especially considering... - 3) I wanted the extra ports, particularly the hdmi and sd card readers. Yes, I could have just purchased a dongle, but that would have gotten me even closer to the 14" price while also cutting into the portability benefit of the Air. But that said... - 4) I didn't actually need or want the increased portability -- The 14" was already much more portable than my old 15", and the Air actually felt too insubstantial; it made me feel like it was more susceptible to damage. So with all of that taken together, plus the nice-to-have bonuses like the 14" having better audio output, an all-around better screen, and a more powerful chip (with active cooling) for if and when I do need to do more intensive work, the 14" ended up being a bit of a no-brainer.

Im a regular user , (mails, typings, powerpoint, watch movies, researches , watching youtube regularly all the time ) and im deciding to have this mac for long period of time..the point here between , very strong mac with older chip and lower space of ssd , heavier with battery life not the best but with strong chip, more ports , better monitor and refresh rate against sleeker mac , newer chip , better battery life , larger storage but not very strong chip, no active cooling system , IPS LCD display, refresh rate is 60 only and not brighter and i need it to wxtend for many years What do you think i should go with? Can you help ?

I’m actually facing this struggle 😕, part of me knows I will be fine with the Air but it being so close to the pro with the ports and better screen is super tempting, then again those $500 dollars do make a difference for me as I could use them for accessories, new AirPods, a monitor, etc…

For the Air, you could always carry a dongle with all the ports you need, but you will still be stuck with the screen. I'd say what it really comes down to is your workflow, how long you're planning on keeping your laptop for, and how often you'll be travelling with it. I've got the M2 base model and I've been loving it!

Go for the pro if you have the money and plan on using it for a long time. Accessories can wait imo. However, if you do think the air will be fine for you, and you upgrade often, then it is the better choice imo.

I don't mind carrying half a kilo more in my backpack, so the M1 Pro is my pick as all the positives outweigh the $300 price differential for a base chip model with 16gb Ram and 1TB sdd. And whichever one you buy, I would definitely not go below 16gb Ram and 1TB sdd.

The extra weight of the Pro vs the Air doesn't matter in your bag. Where it matters is if you're trying to use it on the sofa or on a plane/transit. Carrying an extra pound or using it on your lap while stationary is basically unnoticeable. The real deciding factor here is do you use your PC exclusively for office and browsing and is 250GB of storage enough. If the answer to both is yes, get the Air; if the answer to either is no, get the Pro.

  • @neocs193p

Did exactly what you suggested with the pros/cons list and the score came up too close to call. Ended up going for the Air because having tried both, the Air screen hurts my eyes much less than the better specced Pro screen, especially noticeable in longer sessions. The difference was big enough to make me settle for a less impressive & smaller screen, worse speakers, and no HDMI + right side USB-C ports, all of which I found valuable. The Air portability is amazing though, so all good.

Interesting that the 14" MacBook gets up to 100ºC too with fans. A MBA with 16GB 512ssd is a better option but then it gets close in price to the 14" MBP

(High specced) M2 Air - I already have a powerful desktop machine. The laptop is a secondary device and my focus is on portability but I want it to be able to do a big tasks in a pinch. M1 Pro/Max MBP - The laptop is my everything. Here is where I will do the lot of my work. I feel the somewhat small compromise of portability is worth it for me having uncompromising performance. Base/“MKBHD-config’d” MBA - I don’t quite have or need to spend the budget to consider other options. This will really be great for the price anyway.

To someone who is planning to buy one of these, I request you to go for 16 inch model if you have weak eyesight or if you have any issues with your eyesight or if your work involves a lot of reading and typing. I have been using the 14 inch MacBook Pro for almost 6 months now and it is a delight to use. Definitely a better value for money than the MacBook Air. However, I wish I went ahead with the 16 inch MacBook Pro for the screen size and the comfort it provides for reading and writing.
