    don't forget, there's a 1 rod 2 hook maximum when targeting rockfish from both shore and vessel. ALSO, did you know there's a CA reg for assist hooks too? IGFA rules state that: "Assist hooks or other such single hooks that are attached to a lure with a lead constructed of monofilament, multifilament, wire or other such material must conform to the following: When using assist hooks on any artificial lure, other than a skirted lure, the lead cannot be more than 1 ½ hook's length and the bend of the hook may not be more than 4 inches (101 mm), whichever is less, from the closest point of attachment on the lure. Double and treble hooks may not be used as assist hooks." now you know!

    That last bit about assist hooks is interesting. Are they considered different than “stinger” hooks?

    CA has the dumbest rockfish hook regulations!!!! Why? How does IGFA rule relate to CA regulations???

  • @user-kk6lc1th2r

    @user-kk6lc1th2r

    5 жыл бұрын

    So, IGFA is not a regulation-creating or enforcement agency, so they have no connection to laws in California (or any state in the U.S.). They exist to _promote_ and support angling, but not regulate it. As for laws here in California, a lot of it is created around sustainability for the fish species, first and foremost. Recreational angling and commercial fisheries come second. In fact, I think that recreational fishing comes in #3 behind sustainability of the species (#1) and commercial fishing interests (#2). Sometimes, what is best for the fish & crabs isn't what is most convenient for us that hunt them. 🤷‍♂️

    Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, kzread.infoUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.

    This brought back a lot of memories for me ! Back in the day in the Bay, we would take the party boat, "The Cobra". Twin engine 90 ft long monster! Get us to the Soap Bank, The Pimple and The Farallon Islands. At the island he would back up to the shallow water 10' to 15' to hit the cabbies and lings. That was a blast. And for deep water, we used the Scampi Jig in root beer and the Hex Bar both 16 oz to 32 oz size. Don't fish this way anymore, can't handle the seasickness. That's for you younger guys! Like your gear and Thanks Again!😀

    Always interesting to see what people use in different areas. Up here in Vancouver Island Canada we use much bigger lures for the big lingcod. Not that you can't catch rock fish and ling on the swimbaits you mentioned but we use swimbaits like "megabite" swimbaits that are about 3 to 4 times that size. Also the jigs I've used are heavier as well as often the small lures as you rightly mentioned can have a hard time getting to the bottom in current. Overall fun video to watch and good discriptions of what types of rigs/lures to use when.

    The westin sand dab is deadly out at the farralon islands where some big lings hang out - the other westins for trophy lings I'd recommend are the crazy daisy 430 gram in the fancy cola color, lively & glow gadus & the robocod - this last 1 mocks a juvenile salmon & they hammer it - beef up your leader to a 60 or even 80 lb for teeth. I bought the Bobs big boy too but havent used it yet its a ft & a half long. I also wanted to HIGHLY recommend another spro bucktail Ive had nothing but success with. 1 oz (for its thicker hk) the 1/2 oz & 3/4 oz both hammer both lings & rockcod but Ive straightened a few of these hks on bigger vermillion (which love the gold chrome color pattern) so I called Spro & a very helpful guy told me the exact hooks used in each size. 1 oz & up are beefier stout hooks. Trying the 1 oz & 2 oz sizes next trip. I always hook a squid head (just the head) right between the eyes onto this bucktail so it trails in-line & adds volume, movement & scent & it never lets me down - the biggest plus - lings slam it too. I put 2 of these onto a home made 6 ft double dropper loop set up of 60 lb fluoro & I always get hit immediately after hitting bottom w this set up (if there is any bite at all). The whole rig to make is under $12.00. I also put a drop or 2 of super glue onto the whipping which holds the bucktail in place because they really do hit these things hard & can cut the thread w their teeth. Leader: 6 ft mono, double dropper loops at 2' & 4', & the top & bottom get triple overhand loop knots - less hardware. I also always add bloody tuna scent to mask any scent I may add in handling. A 12 oz torpedo weight shoots em down to the bottom b4 the rest on the party boat & that can make a very big difference.

    The biggest lingcod I ever caught was a hitchhiker. I caught a nice black rockfish on a shrimp rig and the ling chomped down on the rockfish and wouldn't let go. I won the pot for the biggest catch of the day AND got the black as well.

    Is there any advantage to the two assist hooks on the bottom instead of a treble hook? Also, do you think one might get snagged less the the other? Really enjoyed the vid, always love geeking out about jigs! Going to the Farallons soon and am looking forward to trying out some new stuff. Any recommendations on jig weights for the Farallons?
