    Thank you! I have been meaning to make something like this for ages. I was thinking about ring lights, but this is even better.

    Right On Keith! 🙌 So far this has been a great light. 💡Depending on the bit I have chucked up sometimes it casts a small shadow under the tool. I still have the side light on. It is definitely worth it to add this light though. A 100 times better with it.

    As soon as you held the led up on the quill I immediately thought about the light shining outward seconds before you mentioned it. Then I noticed the magnetic hardware dish and thought cutting the outer rim off and hot gluing it to the led might work, provided the dimensions are good enough. But what you did was much much better, and pretty dang cool !

    I made a very similar light for my cncn router. They make light rings in all sizes. I got 2 and mounted them direct to a block of aluminium with magnets recessed in the top. Great job

    The video editing must have took longer than the light did ! What a production you got going on here ! Great looking light Jon. I was secretly hoping you were going to mill in a recessed area to sandwich the light in between the ring and the top plate. No silicone required. But that’s the beauty of machining. Everything can be done in multiple different ways. Turned out pretty swell ! lol 😂

    Watch your top knot" is a line from the 1972 movie Jeremiah Johnson. In the movie, Bear Claw (Will Geer) says "Watch your top knot" to Jeremiah Johnson. In response, Jeremiah Johnson says "Yep, watch your'n"...What does the saying watch your top knot mean? It basically means to take care of yourself. and watch your head/back. Back in the day

    We're going to put some kind of ring LED on our optical comparator. We were using a bright LED flashlight to help us inspect certain dies that the built in lighting couldn't illuminate

  • @RightOnJonCrane

    @RightOnJonCrane

    Right On! 🙌 This could be good for that. I could see on an old comparator that you could need more light. 💡 Are you going to add extra light on the underside?

    It may seem a grand idea, untill you try to center your drillbit on a mark: the shadow of the chuck will cast a nice shadow. I have taken mine down.

    Great job. Don’t count on it lasting however. I’ve used the same angle eyes on 2 different mills. They fail within 6-12 months. The failure will happen at the exposed interface of the clear led lens and the plastic body. You’re safe on the outside ring (thanks to your design), however the inside ring is against the quill where oil coming down from the quill will wick into the led causing it to fail. I think if you carried thru with and encased the led in the aluminum part you’d be safe. Cheers from Vancouver.
