@syn schecter do you know how production works for an event? You have riggers who set equipment up, they obviously had no idea what they were doing Just like saying if it happened to Sting on WCW it was bischoff fault Childish
Vince Russo- "This is thing that alot of people don't understand"
Love Russo throughout this video, I was hooked to Monday Night Television through the Monday Night War Era (the late 90's and very early 00's). Absolutely wrestling's golden era and to listen to two guys who were enormous players in the whole spectacle, hell they were the top two writers for both Raw and Nitro through the thing, is just fascinating. I also think Russo comes as very sincere and surprisingly (given his reputation) humble throughout the video. But the one place Russo really, really loses me is when he takes about "Owen's destiny", he's a smart enough guy to know that isn't going to fly as an explanation for Owen Hart's death. Really wish he would have kept that opinion, and it is an opinion, to himself. He really is an interesting guy to listen to, he has undeniable charisma. something rarely associated with a writer.

@@DIESEL0759 I think that's true but either thats the case and Russo is the biggest liar on the planet or he's sort of incorporated it from when he actually needed to constantly lie
Russo seems so defensive when the topic turns to Owen Hart
I enjoyed watching this interview, thank you so much for posting it!! You rock!!!

I actually enjoy this Russo.
Russo gets a bad rap. I never was so excited for monday night when he was lead writer in those days.
Bad interviewer. He could have gotten more info from the 2 if he asked the right questions and hadn't interrupted their answers

Why say in 20 words what you can say in 6000
1999 was my favorite year in Professional Wrestling, besides Owen Hart's death. It felt really uneasy watching the rest of the Pay Per View that night. (I didn't care) All I cared about was Owen at that point.
Ask a question, let them answer it, repeat their answer 500 times longer in slightly different words then add your own opinion and wait for approval. Repeat. Great interviewing technique.
You make very good points. With Bret, I don't count his WCW run because it was atrocious, and you have to remember that he was only a heel to the American audience in the WWF during the 90s. He was always "pure" as a babyface, whereas Sting sort of became the anti-hero. Still, you are right about Sting, and the most significant point is that even as a heel, I can't remember a time where he was booed out of the building. I doconsider the Main Event Mafia and WCW 99 runs to be heel runs, though.
(continued...) and at the end of the day, it was a damn accident. The reason I get so up-in-arms defending Vince on this issue is because of that Jim Cornette shoot "Vince Russo killed Owen Hart" and the fact that so many in the IWC are myrmidons who hear that and believe it. We all know Russo had a warped view on writing, but his warped view was successful back then, and it doesn't merit 1000s of people calling him a killer. The stunt team should have been more careful. Period.
Russo sure does have a good memory

This could be a drinking game. Take a shot everytime Russo says "I gotta be honest".
No matter what skeletons they may have these two men made wrestling better, they did it when they started the Attitude Era, they did it in WCW.
Don´t hate Russo. He got all the heat for becoming the first writer outside the business.
Great damn interview
Vince kept interrupting Ed and then undermining him by saying shit like, "I don't think you were there..." especially when Ed had to respond, "I was there!" It happened multiple times and we're not even half way through the four part interview. Ed said, "you're going to interrupt me and then say I wasn't there?!" Haha.
«Here something you can't understand » Russo said 10 times minimum...what a big head. He really believe in himself in a way that I can understand WCW die. In TNA, it was the same thing, you can smell a Russo's booking a mile away.

Wade Keller is a mark, they don't understand wide spread appeal, they want to see an hour iron man match
Interviewer is great btw, asks some really good questions and pushes hard.
Vince Russo on his own sinks ships ... Vince Russo with a creative wall he has to break through (vince mcmahon) creates magic.
Why is Russo wearing That 70's Guy's gimmick?
So you're completely neglecting the fact that Sting did it 100 times? Anyway, my point is that the only reason people say it was a dumb idea is because of how it turned out. That clip would be on every Owen Hart DVD had it gone well. And if Russo says "Owen never told me he didn't want to do it" then I believe him. I understand that Owen must have felt pressure and I do know all of the details, but that doesn't make Russo responsible. He's not the man who's job it was to make sure Owen was safe.
I don't particularly like either of these guys but this is a fascinating interview for any wrestling fan.
Yes Yes Yes, The Big Bossman was the best bad guy ever in late 1999. His poem for Big Show's "Dead Daddy" is one of my favorite attitude era moments. I can enjoy it even more knowing that Big Show's dad didnt legitamately die at that time. It wouldve taken the shine off it a bit if Show really did lose his dad at that time.
as much shit as people talk about Vince Russo, if the WWE brought him as an onscreen character today after all the shit people know about him I think he would draw massive heat as an on air character
No one will ever understand wrestling like Vince Russo! Not Bill Watts, not Cornette, not Vince McMaon, no one! Only a wrestling genius like Vince Russo could have classics like Judy Bagwell On A forklift or Tits And Ass Rasslin.
I'll never forget this!
If I had a nickel for everytime Russo says, "I'll never forget," well, I have to be honest with you -- I'd be a freakin' millionaire!
Triple H knew it was his idea.
P.S. RIP Owen, you will never be forgotten.
lol yeah I always look for long wrestling shoots that I listen to every night before I go to sleep hahaha I love these hour long shoots I've watched this entire shoot so many times because its just so enjoyable
Thanks for this!
The Al Snow/Bossman Angle was fucking funny, cooking and eating his dog or whatever the fuck that was lmfao!!!
I think their mutual idea that Owen was fulfilling his destiny by dying in such a horribly tragic manner is cognitive dissonance on their part to relieve the guilt they had been feeling. Nothing that happened that night was Ed or Vince's fault, but I can understand why they might feel guilt for a while. That was their friend and they loved him. I get it. But to say Owen was fulfilling his destiny that night is not only intellectually lazy, but also insulting.
When Ed was saying Owen fell, the slap of the hands together was just a little disrespectful.Wow...
Hbk best ever. He cried man to bret in the ring on there reconciliation, Brets face at the time priceless. Peace
Bro, to be honest with you, I’ll never forget...

Its refreshing to hear an interview like this. Both VR and Ed Ferrara give so much credit and are, to my mind at least, very honest. I hate listening to some people in the industry - Bret Hart in particular - because they have nothing good to say about anyone.

When there is nothing good to say about a certain person, then you can't say something good about that person. Very simple.
This is the thing a lot of ppl dont understand bro.
I doubt they thought it was a work, especially since the ring was covered in blood.
Vince Russo will never forget
Vince Russo trully does sound like a changed man.
Didn't think it existed, but it's funny to see the (seemingly) honest side of Vince Russo.
Wade Keller is insufferable. Sort of person who always has to have the last word and needlessly interject to make themselves look smarter or know more than those they are speaking to.

You should hear his grammar corrections and promo rewrites on Castrating The Marks every week lol. He thinks he's above everyone.
and he'll be honest with you, 'cause he's gotta, as he never forgets.
" and I'll never forget thisss!"
I'll never forget
Vince Mcmahon had to do what he did. He had to lie........anything else would have resulted in Bret not showing up
It's nice to see Russo get along with Wade Keller. There's no reason anymore these guys can't get together like this and talk. All that shit that happened was years ago.
You can't blame Russo for Owen's death, though. It was his idea, sure, and he still feels a degree of guilt for that whether he admits it or not, but I can understand him saying it was fate, especially with the hatred people have placed on him for it. He seems to really like Owen. That said, to say it's his fault and not the stunt team's is absolute bullshit. Once Owen said "sure Vince", it was out of his hands. And it wasn't some "stupid, random idea", it was something popular at the time.
Alls I keep hearing is you gotta understand, and what people don't understand
Love what Vince said about Owen. He is so true. It's God's plan, not anyone else's.
I prefer him to Meltzer.
Russo looks like the rock with them sideburns lol
Vince : "I will never forget...bla bla bla" thats how he answers everything haha lol but still tis is an amazing shoot interview!
this is the birth of bro vince

Russo never forgets a thing except when Ed was around. lol
That's Wade Keller. And yes your right.
The Austin/Rock v Bird/Magic analogy is awesome- except for in the NBA's case it was the rebirth, and in WWE's case it was unfortunately the beginning of the demise.
at 41 minutes in it seems to cut out or skip when Russo goes to answer the question.
One thing Russo will NEVER do is......forget
I don't care one way or the other about continuing the PPV. All I said was it was stupid for them to compare what happened to Hart with what happened to Pillman. What happened to Pillman didn't happen in front of other people, and the live crowd and the home audience didn't see Hart die, but they did know what was happening, and the live crowd did see the EMTs work on Hart.
53:00 Ted DiB said in an Interview: "Owen refused to be in a story line were he cheeted on his wife. As a punshment he got the BB gimmick again."

Poor Steve Austin! He was always so shy and insecure!! He knew no one would ever believe in him!! Only Vince Russo could see what Steve could be, but Steve would have to believe in himself first!! Steve was just always very shy and quiet! He always thought he would be a job guy! Fortunately, Vince Russo came along and invented Austin 3:16 and Stone Cold!
good stuff so far. wether its all true or not. It's a different point of view in wrestling you don't really hear.
Is Vince Russo actually taking credit for austin 3:16?
@TheFishingNomad
4 жыл бұрын
He made in very very clear that he is not taking credit for it.
what year was this interview done?
'I gotta be honest'...first line of a bullshitter. If he was being honest, he wouldn't need to tell us he is being honest.
Never a truer word spoken on You Tube!
I wouldn't know...never been on one with him! Sorry, couldn't resist!
I always look back on Over the Edge 1999 and think that Owen coming down like that would be unnecessary even for an IC title match. Unlike when Shawn Michaels did it the first time that he won the WWE title at Wrestlemania. Certainly a tragedy and I hope that Owen will go in the Hall of Fame someday.
@BreakerOfBoxes - I couldn't agree with you more (regarding your comment about 'heat'). It's what a good heel is all about. Russo created some fantastic heat for a number of workers during the late 90's/early 00's. Also,as disgusting as it was,it's no different to what we see in any movie. If it makes the audience what to see you get your ass handed to you, then it's done it's job. You're spot on.
Because most people are smart enough not to judge people by what they say or what impression of them they take away from an interview, but by their actions. And he has taken credit for the Attitude Era. I'll be fair about it and say he definitely contributed, but to say he was the main guy isn't correct at all. Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin were the two that sealed the deal. Michaels planted the seed and Austin watered the plant that bore the fruit.
Owen wasn't in control of his destiny, you are right. The people who supplied him unsuitable equipment were the ones who controled his destiny. If they had of actualy got the right people in to do the rappel instead of using guys who used sailing equipment that only needed 5lbs of pressure to release when they are rappeling a guy who was over 200lbs, Owen would have finaly left the business a few months later as planned, and taken up his position in the fire service that he had been accepted for
It's not so much that I believe them or not. What I like about this is that it's another side of wrestling you just don't get to hear. The true business part of it. Not wrestlers complaing about this and that. But the people who are part of the business side. And you don't really hear wirters and bookers, and upper management explain what goes on. And how it goes on. And I get most people would never believe them. But why? Unless your in their world what would anybody know?
On Austin's newest dvd he said that he came up with the Austin 3:16 thing on the fly right after he came back to the building before the last match that night. I like the shoot interviews like this a lot more than the WWE bio dvd's.
Keller always looks bored unless he's the one talking.
No, it's called enjoying the sound of your own voice.
"I'm not saying that neccessarily it was Owen's destiny...but it was." Huh?!
owen was DOA when he arrived at the hospital. mick foley did an interview where he actually said that one of the people working on owen that night told mick that owen was dead when they loaded him into the ambulance. maybe it was wrong maybe it was right but that had to be a tough decision regardless of the outcome. if hed have stopped the show, Bret wouldve prolly said owen wouldve wanted the show to go on. you gotta realize, Brets not gonna agree with vince no matter what he does at that time.
Listen, I am with you 100% in that I don't agree with Russo's "beliefs", but I respect everyone's opinion and if that's what he believes, I'm in no place to pass judgment. In the same way, I think it's best to respectfully disagree with you because that's probably the most we'll get out of continuing this debate. I've enjoyed talking to you and appreciate it, but I think we've said all we can say.
Vince can’t remember if his buddy ed was their but your gunna believe what he says about where and when things happened
(continued...) If saying "it was meant to happen" helps Russo sleep at night, it doesn't bother me. A LOT of people believe that everything in this world happens for a reason, and had Russo said it about a non-tragic situation, he wouldn't get shit for it. That's what I mean by being objective. My thoughts are: If Russo really would have been cool with Owen saying no, it's a shame he didn't. And also, Russo is responsible, but not NEARLY as responsible as he's painted to be...
Whats the story with starcade and survivor series 87 that was referred to around 47:00
They didn't show it because it wasn't time for the entrance yet. Owen was hanging there suspended waiting for his cue when he accidentally hit the release trigger...
@dallascowboysnumberonefan4863
2 жыл бұрын
No Owen never touch it,it released on it's own accord because of tension in the line as he was moving around trying to get comfortable.
It's called perspective
(continued...) Several people took part in this. Russo, McMahon, Jim Ross, Owen himself and the stunt techs all had to approve of the stunt. If they weren't cautious enough, that's the fault of everyone. And you CANNOT deny that Russo is the heater in any situation he can be, such as being blamed for the death of WCW. Different topic, though... Like I said, once Owen said "yes", it was out of Russo's hands. The idea made sense on paper, and it's not even 1% his fault that it went wrong.
What is it about discussions on Owen Hart's death that stops us in our tracks? Man, 14 years later it's still such a tear-jerker to think about.
Who the fuck is Chyner?!
There seems to be some contradiction as far as the Austin 3:16 promo. According to Austin is his latest DVD, he says that Michael Hayes came up to him and mentioned the promo that Jake "The Snake" Roberts had done about Austin. Jake was doing that religious gimmick and Austin was at a hospital getting stitches on his mouth. Austin claims that as soon as Hayes told him about the Jake promo he immediately came up with the "Austin 3:16" promo. Makes me wonder what's the true story about that.
And BTW, no one will ever convince that PPV should have continued after Owen fell to his death. The guy literally splattered in the ring after he fell from 8 stories above. If you ever see footage of the PPV (Over the Edge 1999, there is large bloodstain in the corner of the ring he hit when he landed throughout the remainder of the event. Lastly, what an ironically ominous name for that PPV "Over The Edge"
@DangerHiVoltage
7 жыл бұрын
Shawn Mckech that's absolute bullshit there was no "splat" the blood was either from gangrel at the heat prior to the event or it was Owens internal bleeding
@paulle1899

The bloodstain corner was there long before Owen's falling, it was from the Gangrels who throw blood at the Hardy Boyz earlier on Sunday Night Heat.

It's a shame wade and russo now don't get along.
I think russo asks if Ed is there so he can create an awesome story about how he came up with every thing. It's obvious to me that russo is not that smart.

Fatima Gaye What I find fascinating is how Russo managed to make so much money when he was obviously such an idiot. I'm sure he made a million or two and its all based off stealing silly ideas from B and C movies. I'm not a fan of Ferrara but he seems to be the more intelligent of the two. Russo somehow has been able to make more money than a lot of people will ever make in the lifetimes and he isn't that talented when it comes to creativity or writing or anything. He doesn't realize how lucky he really is to ever have been employed by the WWE or WCW or even TNA.
Hrmm, I know he doesn't mean any disrespect, but I dunno where I stand with his 'fate' answer concerning Owen.
