After a little over 2 weeks of use, this has been the best gaming monitor I've ever used. While not perfect, the color accuracy, vibrancy, and buttery smoothness made this a winner in my book. Can't wait to keep gaming on this bad boy!

with the price drop, it's actually the same or less than the alienware ones, so you don't have to pay a "premium" anymore. I'm still waiting on the OLED G9, though.

So I currently own both the G8 and the DWF and I’m genuinely stuck on what monitor to keep. The G8 has to my eyes a noticeably brighter and the vibrancy on it is just really amazing, don’t know why it may be that they use a better coating on it. Funnily enough I am also mildly Red Green color blind! So I will be using your reviews moving forward! To my eyes If I push digital Vibrancy on the Nvidia Slider to 70% vs the default 50 then the Alienware matches the color output of the Samsung and you get those stunning vibrant images, especially in true HDR content (meaning no Auto-HDR), my only issue with the DWF besides aesthetics (which I can live with) is that for some reason I don’t find the image as vivid on certain games, not sure if it’s that the Samsung is brighter and therefore gives me the illusion that the in-game lighting is brighter in games with bad lighting (the in game lighting in FFXIV kinda sucks) but when comparing on hdr videos or natively supported hdr games the picture is identical. So obviously a no brainer right? Keep the G8 and return the DWF but here’s the issue with that, the G8 actually has worse HDR EOTF tracking than the DWF and it’s noticable in side by side tests and just gameplay in general (don’t worry the HDR tracking isn’t terrible, it’s genuinely very good but when comparing the two side by side after the new firmware update the DWF is noticeably better in peak brightness hdr scenes (samsung tends to overdo the brightness in peak scenes and messes with the overall image). The second issue is the wake from sleep bug, it’s so genuinely annoying that I have to power cycle my machine from time to time to get the monitor working. I would do hdmi 2.1 but my GTX 1080 doesn’t support it so I would be severely limiting myself in Hz on the monitor. Basically what do you think would be the best approach here? Keep the G8 for the minor (but still noticeable visual Improvements or just keep the DWF and wait for the next gen G8 OLED from Samsung? TLDR: Have both the G8 and the DWF after the recent firmware update. Not sure which to keep, both have tradeoffs

I prefer to use a micro hdmi 2.1 to hdmi cable or hdmi 2.1 with a micro adapter. I'll link both below. The sound is just "ok." It'll get the job done for day to day stuff, but I'd definitely recommend using good speakers & not the built in sound. That said, most decent gaming monitors don't have any sound, so I guess that's something at least. Right now, I'd lean g8 if you're getting it for gaming, g9 for productivity. A lot of games don't take advantage of the ultrawide 32:9 really well. However, that will probably improve over time. The g9 offers a ton of space for work & can replace a 2 monitor setup, easily.

Thanks for watching. Now a couple months in, I couldn't be happier with the g8. I doubt I do a video on specific settings. I'm mildly red/green colorblind, so mine would look a little off & oversaturated to most people. For HDR, download the Hdr calibration app for windows. It will let you tweak everything to your specific tastes. Then, leave hdr turned OFF in windows & only turn it back on when you're about to play a game or watch something. Windows does really poorly trying to regulate brightness. Yes, the DP bug is an issue still & I recommend using the micro HDMI 2.1. Hdmi 2.1 actually has higher bandwidth than DP 1.4, so no worries about frames. I found a different micro hdmi to hdmi adapter recently that I really like. I'll link it at the bottom. As for brand, any decent hdmi 2.1 will do. Silkland just sent me cables to test & review. They seem solid so far, good build quality. I plan to cut them open next to look at the quality inside compared to other brands. Cableconn is another inexpensive option. If you're in the US, the Best Buy Essentials brand is actually solid for $20. It's a complete waste of money to drop $50+, on a high end cable. Just stay away from anything too cheap from someone you never heard of on Amazon. Enjoy the 4090. Mine barely breaks a sweat no matter what I throw at it. As far as I can tell, the DP sleep bug is still there. It's deeper than just Samsung firmware. It's tied to windows 10/11 sleep issues as well. Honestly, it's easier to find good quality micro HDMI 2.1 cables & adapters anyway. Plus, they support higher data rates than the DP version used. At 34" 1440p it's 110PPI. That's the same pixel density as a 40" 4k monitor. You have to be very close to tell. At 2-3ft, away, it's imperceptible. I've really enjoyed it. Decided to keep it as my main display after review. The colors are insane.

Yep. It's freesync premium pro, & gsync "compatible" using activesync. It's no longer necessary to have the gsync module built in for VRR to work with Nvidia GPU's. I use it with a 4090. It's actually better to be gsync compatible vs full Gsync now. 1) it's a hell of a lot cheaper because Nvidia charges for it. 2) it makes user software / firmware updates easier. That's the main reason the Alienware DW doesn't support updates.

If it's something with static images like a Taskbar, sheets, books, pretty much all "office world" type stuff, I'd probably stay away. Burn in is something to be aware of & you will be overpaying for seldom used features. I'd go with a non-OLED panel for that.

The oled G8 is awesome. I personally love it, but I'm not sure it would be the best fit for you. The PPI would step up to 110, so that'd definitely be an increase, but you will struggle to take advantage of the 175hz @1440 with a Mobile 3060 GPU. Also, while the Xbox & ps5 do look amazing on it, they display natively at 16:9, which means you're essentially just using a standard 27" 16:9. You may see a much better value looking at a solid 1440p 27" widescreen vs this. Your laptop will be able to drive that a little better & there wouldn't be any difference for your xbox. I don't want to talk you out of it, but I'd hate to see you drop 1000 euro and not get your money's worth, if that makes sense.

Are you sure you're not seeing the neo g8 panel type? Samsung's naming conventions are insane for no reason other than create chaos. As far as dead pixles, I saw a few people in the early production runs complain about it, but I haven't come across any recent ones. The panel I tested had 0 issues, aside from the annoying DP sleep issue in previous comments.

It allows you to use the USB ports on the monitor as a USB hub to connect peripherals to. Since the HDMI / Displayport cables don't carry that information, there is a separate port that connects to your PC that allows it to power & communicate with devices you connect to the hub ports. Very convenient & helps reduce cables running from your desk to the pc.

Just got this monitor. Looks and feels amazing once you tweak the settings to your liking. BUT I'm having 1 issue and it's a big issue. I'm using the Display Port. I'm playing a game at 2560x1440, which is 16:9. And it's stretching the picture to 21:9. I DON'T want the picture stretched. I want it original aspect ratio. When I go to the settings, the "Fit to Screen" option is LOCKED to ON. How do I turn this off? Does this still happen with HDMI? I need to try and get this turned OFF. Because it's ruining my gaming experience. Borderline going to return the monitor if I can't get it fixed.

It's a windows setting. Before you play a game in 16x9, go to your display settings in windows and switch the resolution to 2560 by 1440. If not, windows will automatically stretch the display. There are a few games that can auto detect your aspect ration and let you change it in game, but ultra wide support is still hit or miss for a lot. I'm not sure if there is a way to set it to auto detect this in the Samsung settings. If there is, I haven't found it, but switching in display settings before playing only takes a second and will fix your problem. It's not perfect, but it just looks too good for me to go back to anything else. Plan to test the oled g9, but think I'll probably stay with this one.

@@FPP_Tech I just tried that. Set Windows to 2560x1440 and it's still happening. Once I open the game.. it's stretching it to 21:9, distorting the 16:9 game. You're using HDMI? I might have to try that. Don't have a mini HDMI cable though. But if it works. I'd be willing to do that. Even if I have to switch Windows to 2560x1440 before I open the game. BTW.. I also have the AW3423AWF and this isn't an issue on that monitor. I can play the exact same game, in normal 16:9 ratio with NO stretching. So this is an issue specifically with the G8. The colors and brightness are better on the G8 though. I'd pick the G8 all day, if I can fix this aspect ratio issue.

You're playing a game at 2560x1440 and it's keeping it with the black bars on the sides with no stretch? I ordered a Micro HDMI adapter so I will be trying that, maybe it's the connection. To confirm.. When my 2560x1440 game is stretched.. I go to settings and it's showing 21:9, the option "Fit to Screen" is showing On and won't let me change it. That's what is stretching the picture. Good news / bad news. Good news is you don't have an issue or need to change cables. Bad news is there isn't really a "fix" because it isn't really a problem. It comes from brightness regulation across large static images like the white background of a browser or email. Windows struggles bad with this in Hdr mode. The simplest way around it, and it's what most people do, is to just leave HDR off in windows until you need it to run a game or movie. It's quick to turn it on before you launch a game. Until windows gets better at handling hdr brightness regulation, it's going to be there, and unfortunately, the BETTER the display the more noticeable. Funny, A crappy hdr monitor with only edge lit dimming isn't nearly as noticeable.

  • @FPP_Tech

    11 ай бұрын

Better is subjective. They each have advantages. The OLED has much better color accuracy, blacks, and HDR at 21:9. The neo had better brightness, ppi & refresh at 16:9. Personally, I lean towards the color & hdr capability. The difference between 175hz & 240hz is negligible, and 110ppi is more than enough at average monitor distance. Plus, I use a 4090 / 7950x & for most modern games, it's still hard to push passed 175fps with everything maxed. I also prefer the ultrawide aspect ratio. In a perfect world, there'd be a 4k 38" ultrawide, that way I could still get the height of a 32" 16:9 too, but we're still waiting on one to drop.

  • @FPP_Tech

The micro hdmi choice was bizarre. You can get a good hdmi 2.1 - micro 2.1 adapter. I linked it on the description. If you're mainly gaming on an Xbox, I don't know if this would be my pick. I'd go with a standard 16x9 4k oled TV over ultrawide for 100% console. If you're using it for both console & PC, but more PC, then for sure, it's amazing. Haven't tried the Neo G8, so can't comment. I have gamed on the neo g7 and it was awesome, but Nothing beats Oled, though. At least for me.

There is a version 2 coming that will be 240hz like the new Odyssey OLED G9. No official word as of yet, but there have been a few leaks on it here and there. I'd assume it'll be a $200-$300USD more than the v1. While I'd love 240hz, I don't think I'd pay extra for it. Even with a 4090, You'd be hard pressed to hit 240 with settings maxed out in most newer games.

I used the windows hdr calibration tool. It did really well at tweaking the picture from default. The monitor was set in game mode with HDR10+ set to advanced, game hdr set to off. For windows I bumped sdr brightness to 90 & turned off auto detect sdr / hdr. And important note, I have a mild red/green color blindness, so I also have the saturation turned up slightly more than the average person would, but to me it's perfect. Also, in Nvidia panel (if you have Nvidia gpu) I manually set the refresh, & 10 bit color. You'll see some hdr workarounds online if you search, but a lot of it is for older firmware that's been updated, so take it with a grain of salt & do what looks best to you.
