Ultimate Footwear Scale! We rank shoes on how dressy they are with a kilted outfit

Rocky is not shy about what he likes and dislikes when it comes to shoes.
Well, we took time time to rank all the major men's shoe styles into a sort of graph showing when Rocky thinks it is best to wear them - and also what he likes most and least.
Thee are no hard and fast rules about what shoes to wear with the kilt, but there are certainly some styles better suited to dressier occasions. And at the bottom end, we really do not like the look of sandals with a kilt. What do YOU think?

With my kilt, I've worn minimal sneakers, derby shoes with broguing, oxfords, and hiking boots (if weather conditions require). Fancy cowboy boots are dressy enough to wear with a suit and tie (if you live in Texas, at least). One problem however (in addition to those called out by Rocky and Eric) is that the cowboy boots are a statement piece, just like a kilt is a statement piece. If you wear multiple statement pieces simultaneously, they end up competing with each other.

Regarding your placement of "Saxon Wingtip Brogues", on your Shoe scale, the origin of both this shoe and the Ghillie Brogues are one and the same, (not Saxon and both Scottish). That being said, it is a rather humble origin, of a shoe with perforations, to allow for the drainage of water, while trekking through wetlands. Of further interest, if you look at any pictures of members of the Royal Family, (past and present), and Clan Chiefs at any Highland Gathering, they all wear Classic Wingtip Brogues. You never see them wearing "laces up the leg", Ghillie Brogues. And if for any formal event, you will always see them in Buckles Brogues, (Mary Janes). Rocky, is it the actual style of this shoe that you do not care for, or is it just the feminine reference in the "Mary Jane" nickname? At any rate, my personal opinion with both Classic Wingtips and Gillies, is that they are more on par with each other and maybe with the Classic Wingtip, having a bit of a lead over the Ghillies. You can find a range of affordable to very high end, Classic Wingtip Brogues. Whereas with Ghillie Brogues, not so much and the quality is often not very high. I also find the laces of the Ghillies a bit annoying and uncomfortable on the leg. My personal favorite, that I wear most often, is a very well made, British M.O.D. issue, Highland Brogue, that I was lucky to obtain in army surplus, brand new! Thank you both, for your video on this subject and I would be interested to hear feedback from both Rocky and Eric.

I don't have a go to. I wear combat boots or work boots hiking and working in the garden but I have been known to wear minimalist sandals as well. Eventually I'd like to get knee length swede boots. But I'm an old hippie who spends most of my time hiking or gardening.

I typically wear black, Vasque Sundowners, well polished, with my 5-yard, PV and great kilt. For Burn’s Night, I wear my tweed jacket and waistcoat, 5-yards kilt and black ghillie-brogues. When competing I use a t-shirt, but usually dress up more with a grandfather shirt, turtleneck or collared shirt when wearing a kilt any other time.

I once played a parade in sandals because my gillies were being repaired. As for cowboy boots, I'm a westerner and wear them a lot, but not with a kilt, except as a joke. And what about those fringed buckskin knee boots you often see? Personally, i think they're kind of cool (see "westerner" above) but not necessarily with a kilt. Somewhat mixed feelings here. Possibly a tribute to the often friendly relationship between Highland veterans and Native Americans on the frontier in the 18th century?

I prefer brown over black. 1000 mile boots look better in brown with my tartan. What about moccasins? The original highland shoe. I like my wellington cowboy work boots. Only wear them with amish wool paints under kilt. It was -3 during burns supper.

well, as my daily-wear kilt is a black utility kilt, i typically wear vans in the summer or my iron rangers in the winter. i have fancier shoes, but you can't really get much more fancy than nice leather boots with a utility kilt without looking out-of-balance.

Yes I've had several pairs of cowboy boots I love them but I have to agree I don't think they would work well with a kilt and I have worn my sandals with my black utility Kilt but to answer the direct question if I were getting dressed up to go out for example yes I would pay a little more attention to what I was wearing but somehow The Kilt changes you I am much more aware of what I'm wearing when I'm wearing my kilts.

Basketballboots go nicely with a kilt. It's a deliberate clash of styles, but it works. Look at fashion at the moment, the less it goes together, the better. Not that I am an avid follower of fashion. But it can be done.

Texan but DON'T do cowboy boots with kilt. Kilt isnt typical here but on the rare occasion I do I go with practical and black semi gloss. It's just not a frequent enough occasion even though I find a kilt comfortable...but its like my nice suits. I have to build up outfits properly over time and budget. But don't let the best I can do at the moment stop me from trying to look my best with what I have that makes sense in that style. Frankly lucky on the suit side of formal wear. By some weird chance walked into a Thrift shop and walked out with $5K in taylor fit suits for a twin of no kin for around $280 USD. That's unbelievable. Most suits are for short obese office workers. The fact some office worker with expensive tastes matches a construction worker must take a lot of gym time to maintain for him. But good for me. My mother was a seamstress it fits me dead on as well. With only one coat kinda tight in the shoulders as an exception. Kilt and wear is an all new and no second hand purchasing un Texas. So it will take some time to improve it. I don't mind...that's life. 🤷‍♂️

Formalities aren't normalities. Scots often went barefoot, and I think a Roman-esque style of strap sandals (flip flops are so plebian) can look good with the rest of the leather, if not a bit of an esoteric clash. I do tend to avoid formal occasions however. Think about the practicality of a kilt tho... wearing shoes you'd always be trying to keep pretty is pretty silly to me. Feet come first, then appearances.

Rock would hate mens white tie shoes, Opera Slippers aka Opera Pumps that are patent leather. They look similar to women's flats with a big black bow. As for the the Buckle Brogues I'd get real Colonial Buckle shoes with brogue leatherwork without that open area that looks Mary Jane like. For casual if you like tall boots 20 hole Dr Martin's work great with a kilt or any Dr Martin boot for that matter works.

I have a wide range of footwear for my kilts.... although I have several pairs of western cowboy boots, I would NEVER wear them with a kilt. I think that looks hideous!! In my "Not so humble opinion", I think the only thing that looks worse are flip-flops. I see a lot of sneakers worn at events, and although they are comfy, they do NOT look right with a kilt. My mainstay footwear are what are known as tactical boots. They are rugged yet light as a pair of sneakers, and look fab with a kilt. The other thing that I think looks odd with a kilt, is no socks, or sport socks. I always wear kilt hose, as too much leg exposed, tends to look skirt-like. If it's a real warm day, I remove the flashes and scrunch the kilt hose down around the top of the boots. This tends to still look okay, as it gives bulk around the ankles, looking more rugged.

Our opinion, from a lady's perspective, is that the knee high leather boot looks best because it covers up the man's socks and leg.
