About The Game: The Ultimate Doom (or The Ultimate DOOM as a brand, and informally "Ultimate Doom") is an updated version of Doom released on April 30, 1995, that adds a fourth nine-level episode, Thy Flesh Consumed, which contains seven regular levels, one secret level, and one boss level. This enhanced version was made as an incentive in the distribution of the boxed game through retail stores and venues, although to be fair to fans who had previously registered Doom, id Software provided them with a freely available patch to upgrade their copy of Doom version 1.9 to The Ultimate Doom.

The problem is that young children DO have a tendency to copy violent behavior if they see someone or something else do it. Granted, Doom isn't the best example of that, but at the base level the fear of such a thing is ok. People definitely take it way too far though

The first time I've played doom was three years ago, when I was 22. I am therefore totally unbiased, because no Nostalgia Goggles are involved. Now since I never got used to it, the control scheme is bloody aweful. However we got shit like GLDoom, making it controll like a more modern game with proper mouse support and even looking up and down. And now we are talking. I just wanted to try out this old game, playing just a couple of levels to experience what this granddad of shooters had to offer. Bloody fucking hell, it is the best shooter ever. Just no Bullshit, start the game and slaughter some fucking Demons. I was totally suprised how this totally outdated looking game performes. It holds up very well today. And the modding community, just pure gold. First, I would have never enjoyed Doom without GLDoom, because you know, controlls. And then you slap some Brutal Doom or Project Brutality on and you have just pure carnage. Have a real crappy day? Russian Overkill. Makes you smile again. I loved the shit out of Pirate Doom. Winters Fury is also such a great Mod. So much Mods and Maps in general. You literally don't run out of contet with this game.

DOOM's gameplay is timeless. Along with its sequel, it's arguably the greatest FPS of all time. Name another FPS, or any game for that matter, that has continued to have a dedicated and still-thriving mod scene for over *two decades*. Shooting demons at 90 mph, finding secrets, and exploring non-linear levels will always be more fun and exciting than shooting samey hit scanning enemies from behind cover, all the while being dragged through linear levels with endless set pieces. DOOM4 proves this perfectly. By taking that same gameplay core, tweaking it for modern audiences, and slapping some shiny graphics on it, they made the most compelling FPS game in over a decade.

I'm an amateur, solo game dev (though, I never complete anything) and this video really reminded me what it truly means to make games. Doom is fun because you shoot things in the face. That's pretty much it. Sure, there's a really impressive technical engine making everything happen and the art is really nice, but you shoot things in the face. I've been struggling so hard to come up with good art or good music or even good UI elements and it seems like I forgot the most important part to get right; gameplay. I've read so many articles of "what not to do with Game Maker" and other such things that are considered a bad personal or professional practice and they've just made me so scared to do absolutely anything that someone might not like. I was making games that I wanted other people to like, not games that I would like to play. How fitting that such an inspirational and unique game from my childhood would be the catalyst of such a revelation. Thank you, Jirard.

Now if only professional game companies would learn this. It's not a hard thing to remember. When you can go back to games from the 80's and 90's, or even earlier, and still have fun... clearly graphics aren't everything. Think of a game as a cake. All the fancy icing and decorations won't mean anything if the base of the cake tastes like shit. Make a fun game first, focus on making it look nice after. That's exactly what they did with Doom. Hell, they tossed most of the story out the window because it bogged the game down and made it less fun. It took away from the main thing, the gameplay. Anything that takes away from the gameplay has no place being in the game.

I grew up playing games like DOOM, Heretic, Hexen & Duke Nukem 3D, I started young, 9 or 10, not five like you but still pretty young. I loved them, played them all day on my brothers PC, he still had DOS installed at the time, and he modified his DOS to display the level completion screen from Inferno, and I thought it was cool as hell! And because of that game, I developed the twitch reflexes I have today, remember, back then you didn't use a mouse to play DOOM, you used the arrow keys to move, CTRL to shoot and Space to open doors, so it was even more impressive when you could crowd control a room full of demons with a shotgun while dodging fireballs like a ballerina! I really miss those days, I even remember the day I beat chapter 3 of DOOM, it was a warm summer day, about 5-6 pm, the sun was starting to set, and my parents are cooking a barbecue outside the widow of my brothers room, that memory will be with me until I die, and if I were a wizard from Harry Potter it would be my Patronus, probably a Cacodemon.

I love these games and it's funny how they carry the same stereotype that the classic Sonic games do. Everyone for some reason remembers it being a non-stop breakless action shoot 'em up, just like for some reason people remember Sonic being a non-stop speedy pinball sidescroller and neither are true. DOOM's SORTA like that but every game after is much more methodical and actually requires you to think about how best to deal with those 2 Revenants sniping you while you chip away the Imps. Unless you use cheap save states.

And I was both entertained and feeling like a total badass, and also becoming terrified when the music became eerie and when demons just jumped at me from secret doors and what not.

The Ultimate Doom is the commercial release of DOOM. Granted it came after DOOM 2 and did have that extra, stupidly hard episode, but most people would expect a modern commercial re-release to be based on The Ultimate Doom (and I hope future re-releases include SIGIL as a standard as well, even though it's technically a mod).

I think my favorite FPS as a kid was Halo: Combat Evolved. My cousin had it, and we would play it pretty often, trying to complete the story and have a ton of fun in the process. And then, when we got tired of playing the story over and over, we played Multiplayer. And every now and then my younger brother would join and we'd sit there, the three of us, trading controllers each time somebody died (We only had two controllers.) It was a lot of fun, I have to say. Going back and playing it is still a nice experience for me. It hasn't aged badly, I can say that for sure.
