What a fun video! Used to always have fun bringing friends down to the club to try out my K1 because they all thought kayaking was so easy! Every friend ended up like 1:08 lol! Thanks for the laughs!

Excellent. I used to train on the Cam, in Cambridge, UK. Lots of serious rowers there, we had quite a rivalry.

Seems strange that they can balance their own narrow boat but struggle to keep their balance in a very similar boat?

I think the way you balance them is very different

They are built very differently. In rowing you have long oars that controlling you balance. Kayaking you don’t have them.

The rower's oars act a little bit like training wheels on a bicycle. You can lean on them a bit when you are sitting still and while you are taking a stroke. When they come out of the water after your stroke you need to balance unassisted for a moment. However the boat will be moving during that moment and (like a bike) these boats are more stable when in motion. Kayakers can also gain a tiny bit of extra stability from their paddle but it is far less effective than the oars. It requires special bracing methods and an understanding of proper technique to get any noticeable balance advantage from the kayak paddle. Consequently kayakers must be able to balance entirely unsupported for long stretches of time and the boat flips over at the slightest wrong movement. Of course, just because you can balance the rowing shell doesn't mean that you have the coordination to actually take a stroke .....
