    One minor tip regarding using the same color in various spots on the model, always modify that color a tad bit wherever it’s applied. Reason being if you are doing a painting of a plain white wall, there will be subtle differences in hue no matter where on the wall you look. It will look flat if the same color is applied in various spots without modification IMO

    Good one! Nice to see another member of the Linseed Brotherhood, and definitely a follower of Wappel. ;) I started using oils about a year ago after seeing a bunch of Wappel's videos and Twitch, and I'm absolutely in love with them. You covered the basics really well in this video. Another advantage of oils that I've found is that they will dry exactly the same color as they come out of the tube. Acrylics can often have a tendency to shift value just a bit as they dry, but you don't get that with oils. It's also much easier to get incredibly vibrant or dark tones with oils, and having an actually opaque yellow (Cadmium) is amazing to work with. Keep it up!

    Great video! I started using oils late last year, and love them...mostly. I love the long drying time and smooth blends possible. The downside for me, at least for now while I am learning, is teaching myself color mixing as well as matching over an entire army. If I was a display piece painter or had a 3D printer, I might paint more with oils, but I have armies to paint, and getting the consistency across an army when I need to mix colors is much more difficult for me.

  • @WitnessMyMinis

    @WitnessMyMinis

    Thank you Brian! I totally get what you mean, it is possible of course but it in the beginning it lends itself the best to single minis , big monsters and heros that can stand out and not be totally locked down with scheme . If you do wanna try painting units with oils I would recommend doing all the minis in the same unit at the same time . At least the oil stage. I sometimes undercoat all the minis with a bright zenithal highlight and then go over with lots of oils to get variation on all the areas , a way to set the mood on the mini. then when all of them are dried you can go over with acrylics and get more interesting minis. Thanks again for watching and for the kind words on the video.

    @@WitnessMyMinis Yeah, I am trying some different stuff, including practicing on a set of spare Ring Wraiths since I actually wanted some variation among them (I was not happy with the first 3 I did...but it is practice). I also am finally getting around to using oils for weathering and washes...I have known about this technique for awhile even before I bought my first oils, but JUST tried this 2 months ago!! I should have started there! I am thinking of trying some of my heroes in certain games (MESBG, maybe AOS) in oils, but I think the 30k/40k I want a more consistent look, even with heroes. I will get there I think, it just takes practice. I dont have any art background, so mixing colors is completely new.

    I have a question! What colour would you use to preglaze under yellow, to achieve a yellow finish? Cadmium yellow is an opaque shade, so doesn't tint - and even if it did it would be too light really. Working with acrylics, a blue shade under yellow would look good, but with oils a blue preglaze under yellow gives me green. Which I guess is kind of obvious!

  • @WitnessMyMinis

    @WitnessMyMinis

    Жыл бұрын

    I usually go with Indian yellow it tints great , from there you can go in with bright yellows like pale and highlight , then shade it afterwards with an ochre or a contrasting tone depending on what effect you want !

    I often hear people say you can go in with acrylics after the oil has dried, but then others say oils never fully dry and the acrylic WILL come off over time. How have you found acrylics over oils as far as staying power? IE: I often have to ship a figure and have always worried that if I used acrylics on top of oils the figure will arrive with paint flaking off. Also what do you use as a matt varnish? Great video btw, thanks!

  • @WitnessMyMinis

    @WitnessMyMinis

    yeah sean there is a lot of different mindset out there, but in my opinion and experience this is nothing to be afraid of. If you use artist oils and put them on thick then you will have a problem, they will take forever to dry. BUT , since we are painting minis , there is no need for that , we can use very small amount of paint. If you want them to dry faster I would use SC75 Floww , I haden't picked them up when I made this video, but so far I really like them . as for Varnish, I use AK Ultra Mat , it really takes care of any shine and blends acrylics and oils together if you are working with both. I've just this on my gaming figs that I've painted this way , and they've been absolutely fine for 2 years now with being handled normally for gaming pcs. Hope this helps ! Feel free to join the discord if you want to chat more , I'm around if you need any help . thanks for watching and commenting :) /P

    do you need to varnish before you go in with acrylics? or is it enogh to let the oil dry?

  • @WitnessMyMinis

    @WitnessMyMinis

    10 ай бұрын

    It’s enough to let it dry but depending on how much paint you used and how much white spirits you used when removing it the drying time can vary , have that in mind even if you plan to varnish to be on the safe side . You don’t want to varnish over wet paint . If you plan to work with mat paints I would mat varnish before going in with acrylics to make sure I get the same finish and avoid any chance of frosting
