    Changes: - Forgot to mention caves are disabled by default, so you must enable them. - Entering caves to cancel hound waves no longer works since March 2022 QOL Update. - Ancient Guardian can no longer be cheesed but his fight can be done with 0 damage with no speed bonus. - The Crafting UI Was changed which categorises items and structures, otherwise this guide is still valid :) Due to fundamental changes to the game including the crafting UI, I plan on making an updated version of the beginners survival guide at some point!

  • @uBreeze

    @uBreeze

    A bit late but as a newbie and someone who learns a crap ton about games like these when I hyperfixate on them. You’re not expected to remember all this information. Take in the information that is most beneficial to you. If you’ve been struggling at fighting beefaloo, remember how many hits it takes to kite them. If you’ve been struggling with sanity, learn how to take on shadow monsters. If you realize you’ve been playing too scared of pigs, take them on. Whatever, it’s a beginner’s guide. Something you can come back to and learn new things or resolve your struggles.

    As he said at the start the game is best experienced blind figuring things out by yourself. Players eventually learn which things take priority like hunger and light, then making a base, preparing for next season, etc. etc. It's all trial and error, that's why each failed playthrough is a funny memory (at least, it is for me!)

    1. Write notes about specific things you want to try. I limit myself to one sticky note at a time. 2. Only watch one season's worth of video at a time, the season you're about to be playing. (lmao why would anyone try to retain all this at once? You should have learned by now no human is capable of that; stop expecting it of yourself haha)

    These comments make a lot of sense. But there's a reason newbies stand around the campfire all night - there's too much to think about. People need a moment to consider, and shuffle their inventory. The beginner guide here actually shows off a fight with KLAUS. KLAUS! Like. What?! I don't think there's a single beginner on Earth that can micro manage swapping between weapon and movement stick. And while getting familiar with insanity is, undoubtedly, a good thing. Many beginners won't want to deal with it, or can't. I think the Beginner guide was just a little bit iffy on a few topics.

    The one server mod I would highly highly recommend for new players is something called "show me". It will help you learn the game so much easier and faster. This mod displays information about everything as you mouse over it. Mouse over food in your inventory and you can see the stats it will change. Mouse over a pig house and it will tell you how long until another pig spawns. Mouse over a tree and it will tell you how many days left in the season. Mouse over an enemy and you can see their attack damage, as well as current and max HP. This mod does make the game a good bit easier, however I think it's worth it at the start to help you learn faster. Turn it off once you're comfortable.

    My one piece of advice is something I am surprised you didn't mention with Antlion is killing them isn't mandatory to avoid their wrath. If you need a bit more time to get ready, or want to avoid fighting them entirely, you can actually feed them foods they enjoy, and trinkets and such, and that can actually buy you time or allow you to avoid their wrath the entire summer. For those who want more time, don't have confidence, or just trying to do a pacifist challenge of some kind. *EDIT* just noticed your character tips video, nevermind.

    Probably one of the best beginner tip that he did not touched up on is yourself spawn two(or three) tree guards not very far from your base and pacify then by planting pines, then lure him to then. You can make this easily by only choping the dead trees, this way one flint axe usualy is enought to spaw 1 tree guard at winther. Two medium tree guards usually let him with less that 400 hp and some times even kill him, even two small tree guards can cost him more that 70% of his hp.

Thank you very much for this guide

    Awesome set of guides! I've played DST with my friends like 2 years ago (before all of the reworks). We did it all wrong, and we were SO afraid of bosses. We returned to the game recently, turns out one of us was playing from time to time and still haven't learned anything, but after watching your guides our gameplay will never be the same. Thank you so much!

    Wow, I played the original don't starve when it came out in like 2013, then got DST and played it like 3 times with a friend. Recently another friend picked it up and the three of us are starting but after so many years and updates, the game's changed so much that I could barely understand what to do. This is actually very helpful because there's simply too much things in the game to figure out yourself and even if you did, you wouldn't know what items and farms are good to set up and what are not. Very well made. Think we'll try going an year and after that I'll watch your other guide so we can fight some bosses.

    Thanks for making this beginner video and showing how to kite properly! So many people are too scared of clopsy but you show how easy she is! Great job on showing them to use her for farming logs too! I usually plant more trees so she cuts down lots of trees and spawns tree guards to kill her, especially against winter feast clops who has lasers. Also a farming tip for those interested - Easy to remember for farming giant crops in winter; a one to one ratio of potato to tomato in a tile. Each tile can hold maximum 9 crops before overcrowding, we only want 8 crops in each tile for this. Plant four tomatoes and four potato in a single tile. These two plants compliment each others fertilizing needs, planting four of each in a single tile ensures the family bonus so all you have to worry about is watering every day and talking to them! when your giant crops are ready pick them and hammer them for all your food and seeds! Enjoy!

    I think another tip for a beginner: if Tentacle Skin is ever dropped from an NPC battle you stumble across while farming Reeds in the Swamp Turf, you can make the "Tail o' Three Cats" (along with 3 Catcoon Tails), which might not dish out damage whatsoever, but CAN be used as an easy way to slap Shadow Creatures without getting hit yourself, thanks to the Range advantage.

    Just a warning for newbies, especially those who just can't seem to get a handle on kiting: Klaus is very much not a beginner boss. It is a raid boss on par with Bee Queen, and is very difficult to beat. Only a madlad like Jakey should try doing this in his very first winter; I would recommend actual beginners wait until they have a Star Caller's Staff and multiple Dark Swords. Otherwise, this is a seriously incredible guide and something I wish I had when I started. I love it, and I think that with the sudden influx of Terraria players looking at DST because of the crossover, this guide will be invaluable to many new players!
