Ultima Underworld Speedrun in 16m39s

Ойындар

(Former WR) Speedrun of Ultima Underworld for MS-DOS in 16 minutes and 39 seconds. Timing starts from after character creation and ends when hitting the green gate at the end. An explanation of the run can be found here: pastebin.com/gnTScSQ8
Beat my last best time by a whole 40 seconds! Less mistakes were made and I got some really fast kills, so I'm pretty happy with this time. This run gets very hectic with the amount of multitasking that goes on, especially towards the end of the run where your inventory is cramped and you have to make sure that your spells don't run out, while still going fast.

    What's really impressive: The guards who brought the avatar to the abyss where probably not even back at the castle by the time this guy finished, so they came back from throwing this guy in for a sure life sentence, only to be greeted by victory celebrations of him having recued the princess and the entire world 😂. Plus: Imagine the speed of that lord's boat; Within 7 minutes after the wizards' death he was already waiting at the shores of the abyss colony to retrieve the avatar. That speed...surely it was 666 knots or something :D

    This game was released 2 months before Wolfenstein 3D. It was not limited to two dimensions as a renderer for the movements of the player and I wonder if it used sectors like doom would do later to render all the parts of the levels at different heights. It had texture mapping, and advanced lighting effects. Edit: It even had objects made of voxels. And you could eve move your head up and down. I'm very impressed.

    Sorry to disappoint you, but I believe the maps were 2D, rendered to 3D at runtime. It did have bridge "objects" in the 2D world, which could be walked over, or under. Similar to the bench furniture objects. It also had floor and ceiling heights for each area of the map. (more like Doom, later still, than Wolfenstein 3D) None of which takes away from the fact that this game was, technologically, way before its' time, and in my opinion, made a far more intelligent use of the 1st person perspective than the swathes of FPS games which flooded the market for years after that. It's only real peer was the Elder Scrolls games. Sadly, the Ultima franchise only made 2 games with this engine, and returned to the 3rd person Ultima games. If they had not, I can only imagine how stunning the Ultima Underworld equivalent of Skyrim would have been. 😊

    Is it possible you could save time by using the action cursors to do stuff rather than the all-purpose one? That way you could open doors with one click, for example. You can toggle the various cursors with the keyboard (F2-6) so you can move with the mouse and not have to stop moving to select the cursors. Also it looks like you're moving with the keyboard which seems to be slightly slower than moving with the mouse when it comes to turning. My apologies if none of this stuff is relevant or if you have already considered it. I'm not a speedrunner but I love this game. Just to clarify, when I play I use the mouse for everything except looking up and down; I select the cursors with the mouse since speed doesn't matter for casual play. But I figure the keyboard toggles could be useful for speedrunning. Okay as I was typing this I discovered that when you toggle with the F keys, you lose control of mouse movement. But if you let go of the mouse button right before pressing the key, and then click and hold the mouse button right after, you lose virtually no speed at all.

  • @ToyStoryFTW

    @ToyStoryFTW

    5 жыл бұрын

    I used to only use the mouse to play as well! For the speedrun there's so much multi-tasking happening all the time that using the mouse for movement is pretty tricky - It probably is faster for turning, but there's always too much to focus. Most of the time I think the right-click-flick to interact doesn't lose any time, as you can open doors a few steps before you walk through them anyway. Perhaps it would save some tenths of a second per dialogue though, which could add up. I do use the action cursors in a few situations where I get the chance.

    He's just using Fly, you can see the currently active spells left of the compass. He does exploit an item glitch though that lets him use scrolls and potions as many times as he wants by destroying the item and turning it into debris with fireball; through an oversight using the debris still confers the spell effects but doesn't make the item disappear. I think that's the only glitch being exploited in this run. Anyway it's an awesome game and if you can figure out dosbox and deal with the clunky UI, I'd recommend. More immersive than most modern rpgs imo.

    Played this 30 years ago but never finished it (think it was a bug with Shak). It has been at the back of my mind to return to this game one day. And now I just finished it! It is a truly amazing game! The only thing I couldn't find was the ring of poison resistance. Sure it has some minor issues, like the frustrating jump mechanic. And it feels a bit 'unbalanced' for lack of a better word, eg getting one of the best swords quite early, most of the rings being on last level (who cares about poison resistance then?), flying and telekinesis are missed opportunities as not required and only used for irrelevant stuff, open spell is very disappointing/weak etc

    Oh my good god that was amazing. On a side-note... the section where you're running down a hallway with lava on either side made me google to see if air had a combustion temperature. Turns out yes in theory/no. It can't combust in the normal chemical reaction sense, but it can have an atomic reaction which was a concern of scientists prior to the detonation of the first atomic bomb. So lucky us, the air can't suddenly become a plasma and turn the earth into a star.
