GOD, HE IS STILL AWESOME!!!
It was refreshing to watch Uli play a Flying V. It sounded more old school and more “muscular” than feminine (in words Uli might use) than his Sky Guitar. Not to mention it just looks bad ass! We know Uli can flow effortlessly with his Sky Guitar. Here, due to the V’s "limitations" he had to "fight" the instrument a little more to express himself. The fight added a little more Rock n’ Roll edge and “human” quality to the performance. One may have to know the breadth of his virtuosity and the sky guitar to embrace what I'm saying, because it doesn’t sound like he’s struggling at all and in fact flowing effortlessly.
I saw Uli open for Michael in California around 2005 for the 25th anniversary. I had only heard of Uli’s name before, never heard his music. Man he did not disappoint!! What an amazing guitarist. It was a pleasant surprise since I went there to see Michael.
2:00 He makes this utterly astounding riff look like it's easy! Amazing.
So cool seeing Uli play the Schenker Flying V.

Wow even to see Uli Roth just in a T;Shirt and he still radiates total Coolness. i never understood the 5 foot guitar cord though ,anybody know, is that his secret . guy could make a boatpaddle sound like a Strativarius, gifted but so Humble , a very cool gentleman!!!
I love playing this song on my drums....so much energy
A wonderful player, a magical song!!!
Reminds me of when I saw Uli sit in with MSG to do Rock Bottom back in the mid aughts. Some sick shit.
I saw them also live in 2013 it was a really good year for Uli he had a good lineup
That V seemed to unleash something in his playing. It sounds more fiery and flowing. He should keep playing it.

Could be as simple as Michael having considerably lower action - Uli has always stated his is high, and Michael is just the opposite.....and I am hearing quite a lot more gain there, Uli always seem to lean towards cleaner tones (at least initially) on his Sky guitars. Either way, they're both great :)
@OrestisTrips

In my opinion it's the fact that since the V is missing a tremolo bar Uli is obliged to focus more on phrasing. Not that he is not paying attention to the notes he picks anyway, quite the opposite, he is one of the most care takers on notes guitar player on earth. In any case this is one more proof of how great he is. Out of his comfort zone (cause the V's shape requires a different body approach than Uli's guitars) but still nailing it. Exceptional player and person.

One legend playing another legend's guitar, that's awesome. Think about the players Scorpions have had Roth, Schenker, and Matthias Jabs is a badass himself, glad I got to see Roth. Actually the DVD he made. Marino. A 6 hour show was last time he played a show. And I’d say it’s amazing myself! I first saw Frank in 1975. Then the live Mahogany Rush black cover record tour. I saw The Tales of the unexpected also. That was at the biggest place I’d seen him. Philadelphia Spectrum. The Juggernaut tour was at TLA smaller venue. Anyway Frank toned down for part of the DVD. He uses an SG with Single coils. It’s pretty cool actually. At the end he used his old setup. Pedalboard for bombs an stuff. Electric reflections of was. It’s a really great DVD. He is definitely still amazing on it. Anyway love the list of players you are into. It’s ve been real lucky in seeing the musicians I love. All except Hendrix. Anyway. The DVD. If you play guitar I think you’ll love it. He does songs from his first lp on. Godbless! Hope you see everyone else you can. Seein Schenker for the 5th time tonight. An tell you the truth. Watching the 2022 stuff I’ve seen. He kinda slowed down. First saw him in 76. Tower theater. Then again for The No Heavy Petting tour. Saw the first MSG tour. Then saw him at TLA. Smaller venue in Philly with Uli Tonight it’s a few over 1000 people. Sad that Rock is played at such a small venue. I love the sound. But it’s sad that pop an rap are in arena. Friday Steve Vai is there. Times have changed. I remember when he was in Whitesnake. At the Spectrum. I couldn’t get a ticket anywhere. Yes. Times change. Long live Guitar Rock. Godbless!!!
One of the masters. He does whatever he wants on the guitar.
Whoa! One of my favorite guitarists playing the guitar belonging to my favorite guitarist! And that’s Wayne Findlay on his right our left on the keyboards/rhythm guitar

Absolutely Awesome. I've seen Uli on tour with Michael before as well. Uli came out on stage and did Rock Bottom with Michael. For old Scorpions and UFO fans, it doesn't get much cooler. Back when I was in high school 43 years ago, I used to only dream of being able to see something like this.
Met Uli in Stuttgart (100 yrs ago) - he CAN play ! He was 100% normal and talkative - great show at the ‚LKA‘-venue ! Have to check-out what he‘s doin‘ those days….👍🏼
Uff si hubiese sabido esto me lanzo a Monterrey Uli es lo máximo soy un fan de años
This is like something from a crossed universe.
When I was in a band in my teens, playing a lot Scorps and UFO stuff, the guitarists kept saying it was Michael Schenker who played that solo on the album (that it sounded like him more than Roth). So it's funny to see the Schenker Flying V in Uli's hands, like an inside joke.
@gillesbourgeois5348

this is definitely a Roth solo, Michael is much more western classical in his playing, here we can hear arabo andaluz flamenco influences and Uli's first musical love.

As good as Schenker is, I don't think he could play this as well as Roth, who is definitely a more technical player, slthough I prefer Schenker overall.

@@scottdwhite50 In a sense you are correct. But I can't imagine Uli playing "Captain Nemo" and the stuff off Dreams and Expressions either. Michael doesn't have the refined arpeggio techniques of Uli...then again, Michael is physically more explosive on the fretboard (see "Reasons Love", "I'm A Loser", "Save Yourself").
@jcmangan
Жыл бұрын
@@scottdwhite50 I agree. But it`s not really fair to compare them because they have totally different mindsets, or you could also say philosophies. Schenker always wanted to develop his playing and go to his limits. He saw the guitar as a tool to express himself and providing him with the freedom to do so in getting the music out of his system. But Schenker as a writer always thought in songs and song structures. Schenker himself put it that way: "My brother always wanted to become one of the most successful guitarists; I always wanted to become one of the best." Roth never thought this way. He wasn`t interessted in success, in fact he left the Scorpions, and he wasn`t interessted in any form of competition neither. He was interessted in what one can do with an electric guitar. He didn`t want to improve his playing on the guitar in first place, but the instrument itself. And what you can do with it. Thus he didn`t felt spiritually freed by the guitar as Schenker did, but limited. So Michael does play a standart V with standard 22 frets in standard tuning. Uli plays a 7 (sometimes 8) string custom made guitar with 35 to 37 frets in all kinds of different tunings. The point I want to make is the following one: Michael isn`t capable of playing what Uli does, because he is a lesser player, but because he plays a lesser guitar. On the other hand Michael does not need a 6 octave guitar because he is a rock player and doesn`t want to play Vivaldi on it. Roth on the other hand always thinks beyond the limits of rock music in general and the standard rock guitar in particular. Before Roth ran into his first electric guitar he was a classical player (trumpet + piano), thus in contrast to Michael he can read and write music. So Uli does not only play, but also write classical music (4 Symphonies and 2 Concerti so far).
Nice to see Uli on a 6 string again!
Singer nailed it. Cheers :D
Still a phenom!
Uli jon roth.. From another world..
Uli, Really really really nice tone with this guitar
On the other hand I still find his playing on Tokio Tapes more passionate and vibrant than on his new renditions.
SICK!!!! 💪🤘
This is like a little miracle you don't see every day, Uli seems inspired maybe just by playing a more simple/straightforward instrument
