After triumphantly casting off the shackles of claustrophobic dissonance on 2020's lauded "Stare Into Death and Be Still", New Zealand unorthodox Death Metal legends ULCERATE up the ante even further with mind-bending 7th album "Cutting the Throat of God".
An acknowledgement that the band's most powerful and affecting material leans to the melodic side, this refined and hook-laden new record is a self-sufficient universe unto itself, a conflagration of inventively visceral Death/Black Metal where dizzying experimentation meets head-nodding abandon - obscenely twisted and addictive, heart-stopping in its depth of feeling.
After a quarter-century of playing music together, Hoggard/Saint Merat are cemented as one of the strongest guitar-percussion combinations in Extreme Metal, and their music has evolved organically into something completely its own. The most well-produced ULCERATE record to date, "Cutting the Throat of God" is filled with peerless rhythms, the band's smoothest transitions, most compelling phrasing, and truly staggering riffage. The exhilarating, liquescent flow is topped off by a destructively dynamic performance from vocalist/lyricist Paul Kelland.
"Cutting the Throat of God" explores a cohesive lyrical theme centered around the rupture of morality, the delicate boundary between depravity and extremity, and the irreversible descent into darkness.
Lyrics:
Stare above at projections from a vast sky
In awe as it decays before these eyes
Concealed memories are foreboding
To see within and envenom
This yawning chasm was created
In antipathy
In iniquity
To flow through ashen hearts
In antipathy
Through and across all time
Face the real
Inward toward darkness
To be enveloped
Blind and aimless
Rusted to abject skin, torn from the bone
Cannot unravel these shackles which strangle eternity
When the real becomes overbearing
Confront the self and its iniquity in every atom
Blind and aimless
Aimless, at its mercy
These wicked and tortured dreams
Intertwined with the real
Until becoming the real
Absent in this illusion
Absent from this reality
Falling into the terror of this reflection

Ulcerate is a band that is in a whole other realm of musicality, and their music is far from anything else I have heard before. Each song is like a portal to an unknown world. I am blown away from their creativity and style. How they developed their sound and figured out how to get everything to melt together like this is beyond me, but I am honored to listen to these amazing hymns.
It genuinely amazes me that each Ulcerate album sounds like a group of musicians who have finally reached a sonic pinnacle, finally having perfected their sound and style after what might as well have been years of artistic toiling. And yet, Ulcerate is almost completely reinvented with each release. True genius.

A band that gets better every album? It's almost unheard of...but here we are with Ulcerate.
The only flaw every Ucerate Song suffers is.... it ends. Great work, cant wait for the entire album.
The quality of this music is the highest possible!
I get to be alive when this band pumps out some of the most beautiful death metal anyone's ever heard and I'm thankful for that

The lead up to this release has had me listening to their entire discography. Stare Into Death And Be Still was when I discovered Ulcerate and I was afraid I would never enjoy another album as much as that one ever again. I tried listening to their entire discography after and I just enjoyed their 2020 release so much their older content didn't click with me. Then I saw them live and went back and it gets better with every play through. These two pre-releases have me so excited for the complete album! It is going to be incredible. this track is really good. one of ulcerates best to date. its nice having them explore these more dynamic tempos they do so well there. michaels riffs really shine through when he slows down a bit
From now on, trying to find words to match Ulcerate´s music is quite hard. And also to Sora´s art which follows it, since the human decomposition theme could have arrived to it´s limit. But not anymore. This fractal of deconstruction gives a whole new level of mise-en-abîme aesthetics!
