    I have tried low G several times, but always return to re-entrant. I play guitar as well so get my low fix there. I even have put high D on my baritone and it really sings in that configuration. Your spruce topped tenor sounds great with high G . . . at least on your mic.

    Thanks, I completely get it. I much prefer high G but I am really enjoying finger picking / fingerstyle with the option of the low G. Definitely won't be putting a low G on the Flight. ;-)

    Like the birthday uke! Clearly best practice is to have a uke with high G and (at least) another one with low G. Great video, thanks very much.

    Just to clarify (and I realize this video was done a year ago), round wound low G is generally used to distinguish from flat wound. Flat wound means the wire wrapping is flatter and therefore creates less friction and noise than the regular round wound strings. They can also be given extra polishing to smooth them even more. Of course, that all comes at a more premium price. It’s also interesting that some folks also use wound C strings, generally on a re-entrant tuning with an unwound high G. There are really quite a few custom variations out there such as having both high and low G at the same time. Very interesting! Thanks for the videos, Rachel.

    Thanks sam, and Thanks for some great info. Yes, I love flatwounds on my fretless basses although I actually prefer nylon low Gs at the moment so no wound strings (flat or round) but I do get why different players prefer different strings completely.

    @@UkuleleWales Although I’ve played guitar for well over 50 years and ukulele for about 6, I have to plead ignorance on basses. I can’t recall ever even touching one. At first I stuck to unwound low G’s as well because of the potential squeak but I was dissatisfied with the resonance of the unwound and decided to give wound a try. I’m a definite convert now. I really like the Fremont Soloist which is flat wound and also polished for a very smooth feel and zero squeak. Where I live, in Victoria, BC, the one string runs around $5 so it’s pricey but really good. There are, of course, many wound and unwound strings strings left for me to try and each ukulele is different so I certainly won’t presume to say what’s best. Thanks again, Rachel.

    This is great. I just got my first low G uke yesterday after playing ukes with reentrant tuning for a couple of years. Tried a 12-bar blues and I'm as thrilled as I thought I would be with the low G. Also, thanks for explaining why reentrant tuning is called that. Never stopped to think about it even though I knew that's what it was called!

    Hi! Sorry. I have a qestion If i use a low g, i need to change the song (at a fingerstyle song)? Like if i play on the first fret, it will sound VERY different, and i need to change the tab?

  • @UkuleleWales

    @UkuleleWales

    3 жыл бұрын

    Gi Dragos, really you don't need to change the tab as it will play the same note, just an octave lower. Many fingerstyle tabs are actually written for low G and lots definitely sound great with low G. Hope this helps.
