Ukrainian Leopard tank operators describe their experiences using the tanks in Robotyne

This footage released by the the Strategic Communications Directorate of the Armed Forces of Ukraine shows Leopard tank operators from the 47th Mechanised Brigade describing their experiences using the tanks.
Various tank operators and crew discuss how much they prefer using the more advanced Leopard tanks over older Soviet style tanks that are smaller, slower and not fitted with night vision equipment.
The 47th Mechanised Brigade was first involved with the counter offensive in Robotyne using the Leopard tanks to help troops advance and recapture territory.

I got introduced to the Lepoard when in Germany as my company (Abrams tanks) attended a change of command ceremony in Austria. Good times .. great beer. Still remember falling out for formation next morning hungover. Great to see these guys on the Leopard rather than the T-64 mentioned. The gunner talking about fighting at night .. we trained on that so much that when we used the daylight sights instead of the thermal sights it just felt .. wrong ...

This is a scripted video. Leopard ( or any tank) is hardly used anymore compared to the beginning of the offensive. Battle results, not counting the dead, are neglectible. However, it seems AMX and CV90 performe worse. The main reason Leopard was sent is because most 72 variants at hand in EU are already given away.

I think that's why they were underestimated. These Ukrainians know they're going straight into battle when they're done and their life depends on it. For most western nations, troops are a bit more relaxed because they know they'll only be sent into combat when the odds are highly in their favour because it'll never be against a peer foe. They aren't fighting to save their friends and family, they're patrolling in some foreign land where the enemy is typically under-gunned and under-trained.

@@MaverickBlue42 Indeed plus the fact no country has won, or in the USA failed to win a modern war without conscripts. Conscripts learn quicker that death comes to the foolhardy, very quickly. My Grandfather fought WW1 and did live training in WW2. He told me that little snippet. My Father in Law volunteered for special services after Dunkirk because he reckoned the so called professional officers were more of a danger to regular troop survival that the Enemy. Bush effecively conscripted the tough guy national guard, to avoid an actual draft, might have been better with a draft.

That survivability is so important; it's easy to forget that it's not just about keeping the crew safe, but giving them the peace of mind from knowing that they're protected, allowing them to fully focus on accomplishing their mission. I'd add its even more important than that: Like the Israelis, the Ukrainians do not have an unlimited manpower pool, so every soldier who lives to fight again is an effective force multiplier for them. Which is ironic, since the Ukrainians were originally trained in the Soviet "face-tank" idea of simply rolling through defenses regardless of casualties.

Tank aside, the greatest message I personally took from this video is the 'everyman' quality of the gritty and determined (brave just doesn't need to be said,) men seen here. True soldiers with a clear understanding of their given objective and a yearning for the normality of peace. What on Earth was the loony Putin thinking starting all this death & destruction? I guess we'll never have an answer to that to the satisfaction all of us... An excellent & thought-provoking video, thanks for posting it for us. It has vastly increased my understanding of the true nature of these men. In the context of this horrific war they still show such decency and humanity - very hard qualities to preserve in the theatre of a bloody conflict, but they are clearly doing the best they can and for all the right reasons. Very humbling piece of video. All I can say to my own (U.K.) and in particular the U.S. Governments is 'don't even THINK of backing-off support for the Ukrainians. I'm pretty certain that most of us in the West fully realise that they really are fighting and dying in a proxy-war for us all. The least we can do is send as much support of all-kinds to them - if we don't, the next war will be on our own doorstep/s.... The moment the U.K. Government begins to waiver in the support of Ukraine is the moment I for one totally reject and disengage with, any kind of politics or politician, including my so-called democratic vote. It would as they say, for me personally, be 'the final straw' for me in the U.K..

Putin first of all thinks about the interests of his people, as befits a leader of a great power. The support of 80% of Russians says that Putin is doing everything right. I can't say the same about European leaders who have forgotten what service to their people is and strive first of all to please the United States. We in Russia are well aware that we are not fighting against Ukraine, but against the entire West. This has happened many times in the history of Russia. There is nothing surprising in the fact that the West seeks to take control of 40% of the planet's resources located on the territory of Russia. Western countries have lived for centuries by plundering the weaker ones. What is happening in Ukraine is nothing but another attempt by the West to bring Russia to its knees and rob it. Access to cheap resources is very necessary for Western countries to maintain their economies. But the West needs Russia's resources even more to defeat China, whose economy has long surpassed the US economy and continues to develop rapidly. China is well aware of what is happening in Ukraine and therefore supports Russia. If Russia falls, China will be next. But that's not going to happen! We are determined to win and we have everything for it! I hope you will live to see the moment when Britain turns into a backward country of the 3rd world with a ruined economy without access to cheap resources. I hope that this will be the outcome of the rivalry between Britain and Russia. Let me remind you that this rivalry began hundreds of years ago back in the days of the British Empire. You have done a lot of bad, vile and cruel things against first the Russian Empire, then the USSR and modern Russia. But it didn't help you and the Empire was reduced to a small island with a very inflated conceit. I think Russia will shorten your conceit) After all, Russia is still the greatest Empire!

Unlike in russian tanks, Leopard 2 crews get the chance to learn from mistakes and return to their loved ones after the war. Unlike what several russian trolls claim NOT A SINGLE LEOPARD 2 CREWMEMBER GOT KILLED. And that's despite the attention russians give the Leopard 2 on the field.

Exactly. There is a world of difference between a tank being hit, damaged, heavily damaged and destroyed. Most of what the ruSSians claim to be "Leopard kills" were in fact instances of a Leopard being hit (sometimes several times) and partially damaged, but then just carrying on after some repairs. So far, a few dozen Leopards have been hit but only four have been destroyed. The ruSSians, naturally, claim more kills but they claimed HIMARS kills before the first HIMARS were delivered so they're not the most trustworthy source :)))

The vehicle seems to be protected enough that even though many were destroyed in combat I don't think many suffered crew losses so definitely giving it props in that regard

I'm British and think the Challenger II is one of the top tanks in the world. However, I understand the Leopard is a very awesome tank with fabulous mobility, firepower and protection. Probably the best tank currently on the market, I have to say it....supreme German engineering...just like Mercedes! If I was fighting in Ukraine I would love to be in a Leopard tank!

What is this now day 2 of Russia's 3 day war? What happened in kharkive and Kherson and now losing positions in Donetsk that seperatists have held since 2014. Why are you begging North Korea for aid and doing more mobilization. What happened to all the settlements Ukraine has liberated. How come the Russians couldn't hold the first line of defence near novoprokopivka and verbove. What happened.

Makes me a bit uneasy knowing how a tank I might have actually sat in now stands and (hopefully) fights near the front lines. At the same time, however, it's what these things are made for, and this is what we all train for. Gives me perspective. They should consider themselves lucky they got the 2A6s - the 2A4s have less armor and a less powerful gun, as well as a hydraulics-powered turret, as opposed to the electrical ones used in the newer variants. Regarding the interview, I would have liked to know more about how they're actually using those vehicles from a tactical perspective, as I have seen some damning footage of knocked out 2A6s in very exposed positions (mind that Germany sent "only" about a company's worth of A6s if I recall correctly - that'd be 14 in total). However, OpSec is paramount - so they actually better *not* tell anyone how they're using them!

It's now 18 Leo 2A6 from Germany. However, seems that several were already destroyed when UA initially tried full mechanized attacks without sufficient air and artillery cover or when they accidentally took the wrong way, into mines. Now UA proceeds mainly with infantry.
