Ukraine's counter-offensive: Why early failures aren't Russian victories | Defence in Depth

As ever when it comes to combat, the Second World War offers valuable lessons.
This week marked the 79th anniversary of the D-Day battle at Villers-Bocage when German armoured warfare expert Michael Wittmann led a force of six Tiger tanks against allied troops. During the frantic action, he destroyed 14 Allied tanks, two anti-tank guns and 15 personnel carriers. Although his actions inflicted catastrophic losses they were not enough to change the course of events in Normandy and Wittmann was killed a few days later.
We would do well to remember this as news of the early days of Ukraine’s counter-offensive starts to come through.

As a military man and historian, the reference to Wittmann or Normandy has really nothing to do with this Ukrainian offensive. The situation just is that antitank capabilities and a determined defense is extremely difficult to overcome. Both sides are learning this. They didn't manage to seize Kiev, they didn't even managed to seize all Donestk and Lugansk Oblast', they didn't manage to sieze all Ukraine coasts. The only achievement have been to unite Crimea to Russia un the east, critical to keep the Control of Crimea in the long run (since 2014 Crimea was starving for resources, even water, because Russia wasn't able to privide adequate infrastructure). So for Russia, embark in a war campaign just to provide Crimea with connections ad seize Lugansk doesn't seem like a victory. Yes, they may gain territories if Ukrainian summer campaign is not effective, but doesn't seem to pay off having become a Rogue nation, cut from international trade and more isolated than ever.

Russia has shown, repeatedly, that it has great difficulty adapting tactics and operating methods. Partly, thats a cultural thing - the russians appear to have complete contempt for life and therefore no incentive to innovate to avoid losses. On the contrary, the russians appear happy to engage in the contest of human attrition. They seem to think attrition is a viable strategy. All this means that the Russians are weaker innovators and the Ukrainians can, and are, getting inside their OODA loop.

They don't have supremacy, they have more like air dominance. Air supremacy would infer total and complete domination of the skies. In fact, nearly 2 months back DT announced that Ukraine had captured some islands in the Dnieper river and this was the start of the Ukranian offensive, and the islands were the stepping stone to evicting the Russians from Crimea. Well said! The disappointing factor in the early lost of those precious Leopard tanks and Bradleys is in the way they were lost. It pains me to express this, but Ukrainian command should have learned from their enemy's mistake.
