Ukraine's counter-offensive: Why early failures aren't Russian victories | Defence in Depth
As ever when it comes to combat, the Second World War offers valuable lessons.
This week marked the 79th anniversary of the D-Day battle at Villers-Bocage when German armoured warfare expert Michael Wittmann led a force of six Tiger tanks against allied troops. During the frantic action, he destroyed 14 Allied tanks, two anti-tank guns and 15 personnel carriers. Although his actions inflicted catastrophic losses they were not enough to change the course of events in Normandy and Wittmann was killed a few days later.
We would do well to remember this as news of the early days of Ukraine’s counter-offensive starts to come through.

As a military man and historian, the reference to Wittmann or Normandy has really nothing to do with this Ukrainian offensive. The situation just is that antitank capabilities and a determined defense is extremely difficult to overcome. Both sides are learning this. I believe neither side can make any big moves and the wars going to become a frozen conflict and the borders are going to stay more or less what they are now.

Russia has shown, repeatedly, that it has great difficulty adapting tactics and operating methods. What a ridiculous point of view. The Ukrainians repeated the same mistakes the Russians made at Ugledar. Let's attack the most fortified point of the front and see what we can learn. Yeah. The sophistry is strong with this one.
Well said! The disappointing factor in the early lost of those precious Leopard tanks and Bradleys is in the way they were lost. When I saw that long line of armored vehicles advancing way too close together, it reminded me the way the Russians were advancing toward Kyiv in the early hours of this so-called special operation. It pains me to express this, but Ukrainian command should have learned from their enemy's mistake.

Excellent
These little pieces, " defense in depth ", have shown themselves to be fantastic little videos. I'm impressed, keep it up
In Normandy, the Allies had an overwhelming material advantage over Germany. In Ukraine, the Russians have an overwhelming material advantage. The comparison is pretty silly.
“Journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed; everything else is Public Relations.” So - how does this critic Ukraine? seems like propaganda piece
Without air support or air superiority they have no chance
It must be exhausting to keep up the mental gymnastics.
That’s one of the hardest coping videos I have ever seen 😂😂

ah yes but Russia was a failure when they captured land but Ukraine is some bastion of morality (same corruption index score as Syria)
IMHO, one of the best Utube channels out there covering the Ukrainian/Russian war. Would be interesting to know the progress of Ukrainians learning the F16. I bet they’re way ahead of schedule.

This guy should make a Hollywood movie like braveheart 😂
Important to remember, Ukrainians in Western Vehicles are more likely to survive to fight another day, whereas crews in Soviet vehicles are more likely to be KIA.
