Ultimately it is the skill of the person driving the vehicle, tyres help of course. But, no matter what, if you have an inexperienced driver behind the wheel no matter what aids you have you ain’t getting nowhere. Highest gear possible, lowest revs, use engine to brake as much as possible.

Ok here is a few tips from a swedish man used to snow. 1. Get winter tires, a 2wd car with winter tiers will perform better than a 4wd without. 2. Stay at home if your car doesn't have winter tiers, there is a reson they are mandatory during the winter here in Sweden. 3. If you are about to slid in to something release the break and turn, your car will turn better when the wheels aren't locking upp. 4. Slow down, think about how much longer it takes to stop.

Unless you live in Northern Scotland there is no need for winter tyres here unless you're rich and you've got the storage capacity to store 4 big ass tyres to bring out for the few days that we might get some snow. Hysterical. Gloucestershire, that famously mountainous part of Britain. Snow always calls out those people who spend plenty of money each month on their impress-the-neighbours car, then skimp on tyres. Winter tyres anyone? I've driven a Gen 7 Celica through heavy snow conditions with winter tyres. Pure magic! As others have said, neither 4WD nor AWD will save you if you don't have the right tyres for the conditions. I currently drive an old Octavia with all season tyres and that's a reasonable compromise. Attempting to drive in snow with standard tyres is a complete waste of time and could turn out to be very expensive for obvious reasons.

Had no issues driving all over the moors in 4 inches of snow to go sledging. To date I've towed 3 different vehicles that have got stuck in snow, a people carrier, an A3 and a Mitsubishi 4x4. i did feel slightly smug. I've also got a set on my old Combo van, with early mornings and late evenings on cold, wet, frosty roads in the country and on the moors, it's just a lot safer and more secure when driving.

Do they not realise the serious damage they are doing to their vehicles as spinning destroys tyres & transmission & on FWD is even more damaging as it overstresses the steering & destroys the cv joints which is pointless & unnesscary as this kind of behavior constitutes dangerous driving as the vehicle is out of control & creating a noise nuisance which is enough to awaken the dead

Choose open tread, self clearing tyres for a 4x4 and learn throttle control. The best 4x4 gearbox in the world cannot compensate enough for tyres that don't grip. An old mate of mine got most places in snow in an old VW bay window bus with narrow chunky winter tyres on the rear driving wheels. We have been stuck on the Delaware Memorial Bridge in a Nor'easter because big rigs couldn't make it up to the top of the bridge. It really comes down to what tire you have on any vehicle.
