You dont have a problem now. But if and I hope you dont, if you ever diagnosed with lung,mouth or throat cancer due to to smoking or heart disease or stroke which smoking can contribute to too, then I'm sure smoking wont be much help for your raised anxiety levels. I have very had anxiety from a traumatic life. But there are other ways to help. Including going for beautiful walks and exercise in general, watch comedy and just laugh when you can, seeing friends, breathing techniques, meditation, doing a relaxing hobby like art, puzzles etc. Get off the fags and get better health. Also get therapy. CBT is helpful and worth doing. Find your trigger for anxiety. Good luck.

People should have the right to smoke weed if they want. Weed makes you think, while alcohol makes you stop thinking. Here's a question, would you rather walk past a bunch of guys who are really drunk or really stoned? There is a reason why nearly all police officers don't have a problem with weed, especially when you compare it to the likes of alcohol and cocaine. The biggest thing of all, weed can't kill you and can't cause any serious physical damage. While again alcohol destroys your body.

You would have to police this properly. Otherwise I feel like this would open up a black market, where kids will find ways to obtain it when it's not regulated, and end up with laced items with who knows what. You know what would actually end this? Raise prices. Make it hard to pay for. And run ads where you compare the prices/money wasted VS what they could be using that money for instead. And if that doesn't work, give incentives for not smoking. Give tax incentives for youth who proclaim they don't smoke and run programs for youth/festivals where the common theme is no smoking, and use the money you're bound to save on a decrease in hospital visits to pay for it.

Yes its also an expensive habit in this country and has been for a while, I gave it up in the early part of this century, so instead of an ashtray full of dogends I have actual stuff to show for my hard earned pennies. If I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have started either.

Guess it's because I've seen how alcohol destroy families and friendships, ruins physical and mental health etc. Something I see happening in my own family too. Its ripping the family apart and the two alcoholics in the family are struggling with mental issues now and losing their empathy towards others, aggressive and not to mention is killing them. What makes this harder is the fact that they are good people and alcohol has changed them. More people hooked on this poison that not only negatively impacts the drinker but all of those around them too. My brother has lost his job and sinking fast. My mum is now getting liver issues.

I quit smoking for 6 years now, after 25 year terrible habit. I did it using a vape. Nothing, I mean nothing else I tried before worked to get me to quit. I haven't touched nor want to touch a cigarette again. Please don't equate the two. Flavored vapes help smokers to quit cigarettes. We don't want to only choose tabacco or menthol or mint. Its too close of an association with the taste of a cigarette

It's an odd approach to banning smoking. But the argument that centre around personal freedoms are deeply flawed. We're not free to do tons of things: attack people, steal their stuff, etc. I don't see why it's such a difficult concept for some to accept that maybe people shouldn't be free to profit from a highly addictive product that has been proven beyond all doubt to do so much harm to people's health. The difference between the health of my mum and my aunt who are sisters two years apart is crazy. My aunt is the older, and she is so fit and active still, yet my mum can barely walk any distance, and it's all because her lungs are so damaged from 50 years of smoking. And even though she's managed to quit, she'll never recover. It was a decision she made when she was still a child, and probably her biggest regret. Cheers for sharing that though! Still people are already aware of certain smoking dangers and shouldn't have to be patronised not to smoke by these bloody Tories! They should be free to choose for themselves as with drinking/gambling/viewing contents, industrial products etc. (I'm not even a smoker myself).

They want to ban smoking but everyone seems to smoke weed. Which is also a criminal offence. This legislation reminds me of the ban on smoking in cars with kids in it. Totally unenforceable. Oh and not forgetting some of that generation banned from smoking already smoke.

Smoking is horrendous but humans have used tobacco since the 1st century BC. Some people will always smoke and the next generation will just be buying adulterated black market tobacco full of god knows what, rather than relatively clean baccy from a licensed shop. Why not ban gambling advertisements and further regulate the gambling industry? I think this poses more social harm but maybe it is more profitable

I havent seen a kid smoking a real cig in the last ten years, maybe more. Pointless

As long as the government gets the high tax from Tobacco companies they will not ban the sales of cigarettes.

Then make the legal age 25 years but once we are legal adults we can't stop people doing what they want and parents shouldn't be buying age restricted items like vapes, energy drinks, lottery and so fourth. Parents are going to do this.

I remember smoking very big cigars on a crowded 8-hour flight at the age of 16. We have come a long way. Another point of view is that smoking kept most tommies happy 100 years ago, and they were not all dying from cigarettes, but we should have stopped smoking after the end of the 1st & 2nd great wars. We knew then, but still did it.

So whats going to replace the tax on tobacco.

As a smoker, i fully support the ban. We already have safer alternatives such as nicotine pouches and patches. Nicotine by itself is non-carcinogenic and can be useful in keeping you focused through the day. In the past, smoking tobacco was the only way to ingest nicotine but that is no longer the case. Smoking is stupid and harmful.

vapeing has been known to cause pnuomonia because of all that damp steam you'r breathing into you'r lungs. i even heard of a young girl vaper who's lungs actualy rotted with all that dampness & were found to be full of mould!!!!!

Apparently, the average cigarette contains over 2000 different chemicals. If that’s not value for money, I don’t know what is.

INDEED Me, I was a Professional Smoker since my Young Days at School I would go as far as saying Smoking was my Best Friend. But I did get beyond it after a Long Struggle, & now I can't even Imagine Smoking again its not Easy to give up the Addiction but Believe Me you Can. As for Sunak's Idea Admirable but won't Work, could even make it Worst as the Youth will be seeing Adults all around them SMOKING. The Way in my Opinion is relate it to Better Health by staying away from Smoking also away from VAPE. So their you are from a one time Addict. Invoice Will follow.

But it also costs the NHS and taxpayer a huge amount of money to care for people with health issues caused by smoking. If you should have the freedom to choose to smoke and damage your health, the taxpayer shouldn’t have to pick up the bill for the consequences.

I understand smoking is bad for you, but smoking is a choice & out of all the years why tf 2009? Couldn’t they just pick a reasonable year like 2010?

I mean, this is cool and all, how about address the many other issues that plague the entire nation like ugh, economy.

im 21, i started smoking at 18 and quit a few months ago, smoking is a horrific thing and i wish i never started. however whats more horrific is taking peoples choice away from them, you cant try and manipulate the public by making it seem like the ban gives them more choice (like what???), that is absolutely despicable and shameful, you CAN quit if you really want to, i've done it, i've seen people who'd been smoking for decades quit in the matter of a few weeks (i just stopped overnight), however taking peoples freedom away from them because in your opinion they would never want to start anyway is just insane. really looking forward to moving out of this country.

it’s like saying suicide prevention counsellors are the absolute worst for trying to talk suicidal people out of suicide - people have the freedom to kill themselves, right? not sure if cigs did a number on your brain or you’re just 3 standard deviations below the mean for IQ; but please, this has got to be the comment that’s most out of touch with reality. cigs contain psychoactive compounds that can be addictive and for those that have been diagnosed with a drug-related addiction, it’s often difficult to quit. the way you downplay the seriousness of the physiological effects of smoking and nicotine addiction is shocking. addiction is already an epidemic given how prevalent it is in our society, particularly amongst homeless people, those that suffer from DV, and other unfortunate circumstances. smoking cigs is not a solution to any of these problems, unless your end goal is to make the cig industry happy, then sure. other than that, please stop sending comments like this. it’s embarrassing to see your complete disregard for public health and the well-being of future generations. please base your opinions on empirical evidence, not your feelings.

There’s a sweet shop in Hertfordshire that openly sells vapes. The vapes and sweets come in the same flavours. Can we sort that shit out first before we ban smoking for everyone? Also where is that missing tax money gonna come from? 👀

Uhmmm... we did this in the U.S. years ago.

There is no possible way they can ban flavours unless they plan to ban a lot of other items unrelated to vaping. Firstly, you can mix your own flavours and there a multiple websites showing recipes. All you need to do is buy a few litres of VG or PG liquid (or preferably both or premixed). This is unflavoured E-Liquid that contains no nicotine (so cannot possibly be banned under this new legislation). Then either buy some concentrate (do that now to save hassle if they start waving around a ban hammer) or mix yourself flavours from many online recipe groups. Simply then add nicotine shots to bring the hit you desire and boom... Government fails again to ban something which can be made at home... they are useless!

An ban on tobacco products would be a better solution. It is concistent with the ban on addictive drugs.
