UK pledges vital munitions to Ukraine in largest ever military aid package

“This would bring the UK’s total contribution since the start of the full scale invasion to somewhere north of about 9.5 billion.”
The prime minister Rishi Sunak is to announce a £500 million in additional military funding from the UK to deliver crucial ammunition, air defence, drones, and engineering support.

Russia's military budget was $108 billion in 2023. Giving as little as possible and seeing if Ukraine survives is not a smart strategy ..... .... Ukraine is paying with human lives while we count pennies .... Time to start learning from the WWII ....... Make a decision and commit to it !!

Russia may have a small military budget compared to the U.S but they are on a war footing and have tens of thousands of Soviet era tanks and planes at their disposal. Sure they’re a bit rusty and dented but on mass they are still very effective. And Russia always fights on mass.

I think using military spending figures really does not help. Some expenditures are incredibly effective, while others can be very low returns. We know that, historically, Russian expenditures are typically very low gain due to corruption. Western expenditures are higher, pound per kg, but they are usually exceptionally effective. Sadly, there are aspects of western tech that simply are not available due to the lack of NATO membership. NATO is not an after school club. It's borne from blood, sweat, and tears. There are strict regulations on application and acceptance. Being at war is a primary violation, and is quite understandable. That being said, the bill passing probably terrifies Russia, and they are going to 'double down' as much as they can. Sadly, they are at maximum capacity if they are sending children to arms factories.

@@braxxian Not sure what your point is....but US and EU military budgets in 2023 were $916 and $588 billions = $1,504 trillion. There is plenty of space there to supply Ukraine weapons worth of $0,2 trillion, which would dwarf Russian military budget. It is only a matter of political decisions. BWT: Russia can produce around 390 tanks per year - including modernized or restored from depots. Russia has lost 2,619 tanks since the start of the full-scale invasion (~1,300 per year).

They've been blowing up landing ships. Russia isn't going to be landing forces anywhere anytime soon. The war is being fought in the trenches, not in Russia or on the Black sea. Ukraine's war is a one of total victory, they can (according to them) only win if Russia is removed from Ukraine and Crimea in it's entirety. For all the ATCMS, HIMARS, Drone strikes and ships sunk. They have not slowed down Russia on land at all. Not since October 2023. Russia has achieved critical mass and Ukraine even with British aid and the 60bn cannot match it, all they can do is slow it down or stop it. Stopping it is not winning, if anything it puts both parties in a position to negotiate. problem is, Ukraine will never negotiate, because they believe in total victory... but also, If Ukraine ever did negotiate, it would be because Ukraine can't fight on - aid would stop instantly, and Russia would sense this weakness and double down. It's a lose lose for Ukraine.... THE ONLY way Ukraine can win this war is if Russia mess things up so monumentally, all morale and hope is lost.

Not even newer advanced PGM based artillery, just the good old standard fare. Ukraine has and will get more material from the US. Battles are still won with bullets and hand grenades. If you aren't feeding the king of battle, you will not win the war. This is very much a land war for territorial expansion. Ukraine has shown it will fight, and I think if there is more support, more people will desire to put their lives on the line to end the bloodshed. As sad as that may be.

There's simply not enough being made or available - best case scenario, Ukraine get 2.5 million shells over a two year period. Realistically, that's 100k here, 300k there... It's just not enough for a force that believes in total victory. We're looking at Ukraine getting a good amount by June and having about 5-8k worth of shells to use per day across the whole front. it's a big improvement, especially with how many drones they have, but from having none, to enough, the tree lines will light up and their artillery pieces will be exposed, not only that, they are short supply too. They are facing problem after problem and in a war at this scale, you have to find solid sustainable solutions. Russia have ensure they have the men, shells and equipment to fight for a few years, at a consistent pace. Ukraine can't even predict what'd around the corner for their own forces. This is a lifeline for 6-8 months in my opinion - but in that time, the level of manpower losses trying to stabilise lines against an overbearing force - by spring next year, they will be filly exhausted.

Ukraine was never meant to defeat Russia, instead they were supposed to exhaust Russian resources so that the clever lads from the West could waltz in and get WHATEVER they want for a fraction of what it really costs, like the French in Africa. The business approach of giving the Ukrainians " game changing" weapons every three months, or so, cannot secure Ukrainian dominance or initiative even in Ukraine, not to mention the fact that Russia has everything it needs in abundance. All Russian defense ( or defence , so you can understand) minister Shoigu has to do is pick up the phone and inform a factory boss anywhere in Russia that starting tomorrow they are making drones, artillery shells, or whatever else they need. In the West a proper capitalist wants long term commitment from the government before they set up dedicated production lines and then they gauge the price and charge 3 -4 times more than what it costs. That way, everything looks legit, and honorable ( or honourable, so you can understand), that way there is no need to get tangled up in corruption schemes, like the Ukris, or Ruskies

Game changer😅its always a game changer, then in 2 months time when Zelensky starts moaning about not enough aid, and they get more, then its another game changer, its a pity Ukraine won't have any men left to use this game changing stuff! And anyway sunak will look after other countries first before his own

Trust the U.S. to provide just enough weapons to allow Ukraine to fight but not win and to limit the use of weapons they do provide. On top of that they want them to avoid the best targets that Ukraine can hit for no better reason than to prevent any negative monetary effects on Americans. Americans are generally unaware that the U.S. inflation rate is among the lowest in the world (about 3.5%.) It is actually at almost the ideal rate since an inflation rate below this does not provide an impetus to give workers raises. The real problem is not inflation but minimum wages being too low to provide many Americans a living wage.

Why did Uk wait till after the US put together their aid? Ukraine could have used a lot of this months ago. It seems once again the UK waits and follows the US.
