I'm a massive fan of Nirvana and have been for a long time. Really enjoyed your reaction to this song, it was an interpretation that I hadn't really come across before so your take on the lyrics was really refreshing. And I see you've reacted to a few of their other songs - so I thought I better subscribe if you react to anymore Nirvana songs, I can watch your interpretation 🙂 A lot of the songs Kurt was reported to have written last minute, however there are some songs that he wrote with a very specific intention. If you fall down Nirvana's rabbit hole further, you'll find out which songs and what he clearly wanted to make a statement about. However (and this is my own thought) for the majority of their other songs, I think that Kurt had a sixth sense of some kind to be able to conjure up lyrics so quickly out of thin air and make them fit a melody perfectly. How Krist, Dave, other people who worked within the industry and his loved ones all described him; it sounds like he was constantly engrossed in specific ideas/concepts/themes. And then he just had this uncanny ability to be able to turn all of those things into lyrics - again a lot of it didn't really mean anything but the song lyrics still stuck to pretty consistent themes relating to birth, death, anatomy, reproduction etc; just because he could and so he that's what he did. Kurt apparently had quite an obsession with those types of themes, something I've always found interesting enough in itself. So yeah that's what I think in reference to Nirvana's song lyrics - in interviews he voiced his hatred for people trying to decipher his lyrics which is understandable, but when they are so magnetic and feel somewhat meaningful - people find it hard to resist I guess. Anyway, sorry for the Nirvana rant 😂 like I said, I'm a big fan. But I'm glad you're enjoying their incredible music 👍

Laura I think this is my favourite comment I've read so far, so well put! Many people may say its silly to interpret lyrics deeply as the musician only put the words together randomly in the last minute. Which is a valid argument. However, often artists maul over their music, writing and working constantly in their heads. So they are unconsciously developing the themes found in their work. Therefore, it may have been made last minute yet the work can be profound as it stems from something much deeper within the artist. Awesome comment Laura!

@SyedBhai awww that's so kind of you to say!! yeah that's pretty much what I was getting at, except you worded it much more concisely 😂 trust me though I love analysing lyrics of any artist or band, but there's just something unique about Kurt's lyrics, his composition of them and the endless possibilities of what they could mean. If only we could've had the privilege to witness their talent live onstage 😍 thank you for your response though, that was super kind 😄

It's well documented Kurt Cobain wrote the song by imagining a scenario where a man, grieving over the death of his girlfriend, finds solace in religion. But I didn't know kurt cobain so wont speak on his behalf

The song is about the duality of manic depressive disorder. One minute you feel good the next you are depressed. It is thought that Kurt was manic depressive. It wasn't a very known mental disease at that time.

Kurt Cobain was bipolar, like me so I totally feel the lyrics in his song, he’s describing the thought process of being in manic and depressive states. The chorus where he’s screaming YEAH is exactly how my brain has felt when both manic and depressive. Chilling and profound.

You're analysis is QUALITY. I always thought that the repeat of the first verse indicated that cyclic nature of manic depression. Manic, then depressive, then manic again. Melody + aggression are fundamental to Nirvana. It seems like no one since has quite mastered this...at least not as consistently. Cobain is also considered one of the most enigmatic/hotly debated lyricists in rock. You might love going down this rabbit hole.

I'm 22 and have been depressed since the age of 8, I've attempted suicide a number of times most recently this week. When you're as depressed as I am you start to listen to that voice in your head that tells you to end it. Not because you actually want to die but because it's telling you to let go of your pain. It tells you that everyone is lying to you and that they'll be happier without you. The voices start to sound like the only real friends you have. They're of course depressive intrusive thoughts but they have a way of convincing you. So What Lithium to me is a song about intrusive voices. Like you said about the repetition of the first verse with depression every time you feel like you've escaped it resurfaces. I'm one of the biggest Nirvana fans around but if one thing is true, we'll never understand Kurt or his lyrics only relate with him and in the end no one ever understands anyone we all just relate with each other. You seem like a really nice smart guy.

@@SyedRewinds I don’t know how you figure the songs out in such detail. You interpret cryptic and mysterious poetic lyrics and I think you’re right on target!🎯 I’m amazed at your ability to do this! I can’t figure out what the lyrics mean most of the time and it annoys me not knowing what a song is about or what it’s trying to convey. Sometimes it’s only a feeling or mood and the lyrics aren’t that important or have any message. They end up creating the atmosphere of the song like another layer of a Cake. To use an analogy but if you read the lyrics out loud, it’s nonsense. They fit the song only and separated it doesn’t work. And you do this detailed analysis without a Musical Background. There are music Scholars who couldn’t figure these details out. Just using analytical logic? I dropped out of college after two years so I’m not educated properly. I see now that I’m at a disadvantage. My analytical skills are poor. I think I’m good at comparison and contrast but that’s about it. You, my friend, are on a higher plain of thought! And I appreciate your insights into these songs and musicians. For example, I was stunned at the comparisons you made between Lennon and Cobain. It sounds on point to me. You said Lennon sings with hope in his voice and Cobain is ok with the darkness and had settled into it. That was a profound insight into their psyches from their singing. You figured that out. I never would have gotten a detail like that. Brilliant! I only said they had a lot in common. Both were the voice of their generation. Both were geniuses in songwriting abilities. Both died tragically and too young. But I can’t tell you their differences. You did that! Thanks and I wish to keep hearing your analysis of more Zeppelin, Beatles and Nirvana songs. I hope you do some Doors songs too! That would be very interesting because of the Poetic lyrics. I’d like to hear your interpretation of what they mean. Thanks, Man! Who says you can’t learn anything from KZread? They’re wrong! 👏🏻🎸😎

Lithium (the drug) tamps down the highs of bipolar disorder (aka manic depression). That’s why the verses are sung so flatly, and have such indifferent lyrics. Many creatives who have bipolar hate taking lithium and have trouble sticking with it because without mania’s highs, everything feels deadened. Hence the “I’m not gonna crack” refrain, reassuring the listener that the speaker can handle emotions without breaking down into irrationality. He wants off of lithium.

Great approach to the reaction game. Added this one, 'Teen Spirit', and 'In Bloom' to the book when I was teaching in an after-school rock-band program in the late 90s-01. We also did week-long summer-camp sessions and set-up on the front porch on the side street where we were in the east-end of Toronto, just north of the main east-west drag north of Greektown at the end of each week and played for the kids' families, and obviously anyone in earshot of the amps and drums. This one was my fave. I always took the "you" in the 2nd verse for whom he was denying himself, as no doubt there were scads of opportunities on the road, to be Courtney, don't think they were married yet, but anyway.

"Grunge" is a bit of a misnomer. It's a label that was applied to any band that came out of the Seattle scene of the late 80s early 90s. The four major bands out of this scene all had a different sound, and could theoretically be classified into subgenres. Nirvana was punk, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were hard rock, and Pearl Jam was "alternative." But they were all just rock and roll. Grunge was a term developed by suits in NYC to market their BS, not the music. ;) The music was definitely grungy sounding, tho. Ha ha haaaa Sludgy, thick, and typically depressing.
