UK Graduate Entry Medicine Application Guide

Graduate entry medicine applicants often can be confused about their eligibility and what medical schools they can apply for.
This video I made attempts to answer the question “If I am in ‘X’ situation, where can I apply?”
I’ve categorised the universities by requirements and eligibility to help you work out where you could apply to GEM.

As an update to the Cardiff GEM course, you can now study the same course at the campus in Bangor uni in North Wales. Just as fantastic but much smaller cohort and more centred on rural medicine

Hi, thanks for the video! I have a question I was wondering if you could help me with. I am a UK citizen who lived there for 9 years before moving to Australia. I have completed high school, a degree and the GAMSAT in Aus. When applying, would I be considered an international student and need to pay international fees? Am I limited to only applying to schools that take international students?

Is it okay to apply for GEM and undergraduate med at the same University e.g. at Sheffield. if you can, then how does it work out? does the university give you an interview for GEM and if they didn't have enough places, could they offer you an undergraduate med course instead? or if you are rejected from GEM are you automatically rejected from the undergrad option too?

This is a good question, and one that I get often. Firstly you need to make sure that you meet the requirements for both degrees. If you speak to the universities, some say that there is no additional benefit to applying to both, however the universities can see that you have applied to both and will realise that you are obviously very interested in going to their University. Therefore I think it might make them slightly more inclined to invite you to interview if they were on the fence. However usually the official stance on this is that it does not confer any additional benefits to apply to both. If you'd like to ask me any further questions about this, please feel free to email me at info@futuredoc.co 😊

I have an arts degree and I know there are a limited number of unis that allow any degree on the GEM so I would also like to apply for some 5 year courses. My question is how do I know which unis I can apply to because I don’t have science A-levels so do not meet the undergraduate requirements either. I am just a little confused and would really appreciate your help.

It really depends on your individual situation, some uni’s- even if you’re applying with a degree- still want to see certain A-Level subjects/scores when applying to undergrad as a grad. Depends on your UCAT score, what sort of experience you have etc… So not a straight forward answer, but generally undergrad is easier. If you’d like some individual help with this, you can email me at info@futuredoc.co 😊

Hi !! I did an applied science and with your grades. you will need to go to uni and do a biosciences degree :) ( you don't have to, but as I can see that you're already doing applied science so u may wanna go down that path anyway) you then need to apply either with your year 2 predicted grades or year 3 final grades during/after your degree :). yes I know it's sad, I think btecs gave me a huge success with science in general but they won't be accepted. Apply to unis that take btecs ( for your biosciences degree) and then apply TO MEDICAL SCHOOLS that take no GCSE or levels into account, there are many medical schools. For example in my case. I am so eager to go to Southampton that im re-sitting one of my GCSEs, paying 235 pounds for it just to meet their last entry requirement as I meet the rest already. You need to be passionate and resilient and patient and you will get through this
