I'm not African (not directly anyway), but it's not common for Africans to go to this level on the roads, because it's hard to keep it a secret from your parents past a point and this shit is massively frown upon in African families. His family probably turned their back on him at some point, so he was left to fend for himself and just got deeper into it. I can't see an African family letting him stay at home while he was carrying on with all this.
