UIA - Rob Ruha & The Witch Dr.

OFFICIAL VIDEO:
Written for King Tūheitia, this song is about mana. It reminds us all that only mana from our atua and tīpuna is inherent and irremovable. Only when mana across the country are in perfect alignment, we will achieve the unity we seek to address the social, cultural and environmental issues we face as a Māori nation. This notion of mana is presented in ‘UIA’ through the prophesies of Te Toiroa-ikariki of Te Māhia in 1766. He saw (through his 2 atua Hākikino and Hine-māwherangi) the coming of a new nation, a new atua and a new form of leadership needed to navigate the new waves of hardships that would befal his people.

Uia uia - ka ea, ka ea
He taupopoki mahuna, he taupopoki mahuna
Uia uia - ka ea, ka ea
He kākahu tīhore nō, He kākahu ko pūkoro
Inā rā e ia
Hākikiri kino, Hā-māwherangi!
Te Ariki e ia
Hākikiri kino, Hā-māwherangi!
Uia uia - ka ea ka ea
He kokomuka pōhata, he kokomuka ngongoa
Uia uia - ka ea ka ea
Te Tama-i-rorokutia, Te Tama-i-rorokutia
E... e whati ana rā te tai,
Whati ana rā te tai tangata
(TRANSLATION)
Speak - so shall it be done
He will wear a hat
Speak - so shall it be done
He will wear clothes with pockets
And so it has come to pass
Suffering and anguish
My king,
‘tis our suffering, our anguish
Speak - so shall it be done
He will smoke a pipe
Speak - so shall it be done
The tortured son is his god, our god
Like a raging sea
So too will waves of peoples break before you
