Ugly Wood Is My Favourite Wood, Don't Burn It !!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this woodturning video I turn a natural edge vessel from a piece of Birch which had a burl attached. This dead fall tree was being chopped up for fire wood, but luckily I was contacted to see if I was interested in the UGLY bits. In my experience if its ugly on the outside its going to be cool on the inside so I was pleased to salvage some pieces. I had to be careful while hollowing this piece as there was a chance the burl section could have detached if I had gone too thin.. I finished it with Danish oil..

The moment I saw that damaged timber I knew we were in for a treat. Of all the things you make I really love the "seriously grotty chunk of wood undergoes dramatic beauty treatment" videos. It takes a connoisseur to see the promise in wood like that, and a master of his craft to fulfil it.

Watching your videos has taught me that each piece has an almost infinite number of possibilities for a beautiful outcome. The artistry comes in knowing how to judge just the right amount of material to remove; it's a moving target and you have to decide on the fly when to stop shaping. It's like jazz improvisation, only with wood and chisels.

Love it. Ugly wood is my favorite also. I am in awe of your control and skill with the external gouge and the hollowing tool. One thing I do with wood that is barely competent enough to support being a hollow form like this, is to bind it more firmly together on the inside of the hollow form using penetrating epoxy. Particularly when the wood is a bit punky or barky, you can easily get 1/16" and more penetration of the surface that hardens into much stronger layer supporting the piece from the inside. If the blank is particularly challenging, I will hollow well before final outside turning and finishing, and build up a significant hard epoxy layer inside before finish turning.

There are some fantastic growth effects giving off a multitude of colours, mottles and swirls, you might not have achieved the total result you hoped for because of the way the wood had grown, but to stop when you did seems the best call from an aesthetic point of view.

So many wood turning videos on KZread and I was struggling to watch someone else carve another vase or bowl I was vomiting constantly, ruining shirts, upsetting my wife and eventually had to replace shirts at Walmart. I think part of the burl section did partially detach. I was thinking you'd have cast it in resin. A nice small amount of transparent resin around the burl area to set it in place properly could have done the trick! It turned out well anyway! 😃

Indeed, the defects ultimately provide the beauty...it's why factory furniture is so soulless, because they cull any interesting board with a defect. Thanks for doing traditional gouge work, I've run into too many, even known name, people hacking out shapes with carbide and it irrationally irritates me. 👍 Andy.

Lovely vase Andy, Phil Anderson said you were worth watching and he was right, now subscribed. Do you ever put voice overs on, as it would be nice to hear which tool, which finish, what wood etc. Just the thought process behind the turning. I too like to rescue wood from the fire. At our local wood yard they discard and chuck on their fire small olive burls and root ends as they dont sell them for firewood (keep going out). I've had some really interesting stuff from them. Looking forward to your back catalogue and next video.
