Ugly Wood Is My Favourite Wood, Don't Burn It !!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this woodturning video I turn a natural edge vessel from a piece of Birch which had a burl attached. This dead fall tree was being chopped up for fire wood, but luckily I was contacted to see if I was interested in the UGLY bits. In my experience if its ugly on the outside its going to be cool on the inside so I was pleased to salvage some pieces. I had to be careful while hollowing this piece as there was a chance the burl section could have detached if I had gone too thin.. I finished it with Danish oil..

After all this time I never get bored watching your videos. You see something beautiful in everything. Then you bring it to us common folks and make it beautiful to us. What a talent

I was thinking the same thing
The moment I saw that damaged timber I knew we were in for a treat. Of all the things you make I really love the "seriously grotty chunk of wood undergoes dramatic beauty treatment" videos. It takes a connoisseur to see the promise in wood like that, and a master of his craft to fulfil it.
Nicely done Andy! Once again you prove that ducklings don't stay ugly for long. Thank you sir.
Watching your videos has taught me that each piece has an almost infinite number of possibilities for a beautiful outcome. The artistry comes in knowing how to judge just the right amount of material to remove; it's a moving target and you have to decide on the fly when to stop shaping. It's like jazz improvisation, only with wood and chisels.
The Decaying Vase is a good name for this piece. Good job. Keep up good work.
That's beautiful. I love it when you let the wood keep its character, instead of forcing it into a perfect shape.
This is the most unique piece amongst the hundreds of videos on wood turning I’ve watched for the last 10+ years. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆 I’m speechless. Very unique piece!

So true. I've said the same thing about many, many of his projects.
Always a good day when Andy puts another lathe vid up
Really beautiful! Honestly, I expected it to cut through in some places or not stay all connected. What a marvel!
Love it. Ugly wood is my favorite also. I am in awe of your control and skill with the external gouge and the hollowing tool. One thing I do with wood that is barely competent enough to support being a hollow form like this, is to bind it more firmly together on the inside of the hollow form using penetrating epoxy. Particularly when the wood is a bit punky or barky, you can easily get 1/16" and more penetration of the surface that hardens into much stronger layer supporting the piece from the inside. If the blank is particularly challenging, I will hollow well before final outside turning and finishing, and build up a significant hard epoxy layer inside before finish turning.
Andy Phillip, the Mikey of wood turning! Great work Andy!
Beautiful, Andy! Really amazing work!!! 😃 Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
You get some of the coolest wood to work with. Beautiful piece!
This one made me a bit nervous, but you ended up in perfect shape, of course! Another beauty!
The precision of your hand is amazing! Keep up the great work!
What a beautiful vase Andy! ❤❤❤❤
Love the marbling in this piece. You've worked wonders with that Medusa-lookin piece of wood!
You always manage to coax out something beautiful from unlikely pieces of wood 🙂
Magnificent, an object of beauty that is only in this world because of your creativity and skill. ❤
Wonderful! Love to see these interesting shapes in the wood...
Stunning work!! 😍🤩
Wow, what a beautiful piece. 😊
This piece sure has some character! Nice😊
So different, and so cool. Some of the wood grain patterns looks like the surface of another planet.
It may be ugly wood to begin with, Andy, but your magic touch transforms it to an object of exquisite beauty. 👍
Love that line in a half of wood, what a masterpiece - not expected :)
Beautiful, Andy. I'm glad no resin was involved with this one. Bill

Way to go Andy
I love that stepped drill bit idea! I'm going to give it a go :)
Another beautiful creation!
The Ugly duckling 'turns' into a Beautiful Swan. 😊. I have to admit, I look twice at firewood before it ends up in the fire. Quite a few pieces have been set aside.
That is pretty beyond belief! ❤
Ugly wood us my favorite wood, pretty much perfectly sums up my own philosophy. Good show!
You never disappoint sir always beautiful work.
Very enjoyable video. Also a beautiful piece. Thank you for sharing. See you on the next one
Gorgeous!
Beautiful result - excellent vision.
That is fabulous!!!
As usual, beautiful work!
There are some fantastic growth effects giving off a multitude of colours, mottles and swirls, you might not have achieved the total result you hoped for because of the way the wood had grown, but to stop when you did seems the best call from an aesthetic point of view.
Beautiful!
A thing of beauty love your videos
Great work love the wood beast to beauty 🎉❤
wow looks amazing!
Bringing out the inner beauty.
Wowzer Andy!
Stunning❤
Yeah I started to realize that too. But I definitely need to be more careful, but it's a good learning experience.😅
Gorgeous ❤❤❤
Prior to finding your channel, I was frequently having to buy new shirts. So many wood turning videos on KZread and I was struggling to watch someone else carve another vase or bowl I was vomiting constantly, ruining shirts, upsetting my wife and eventually had to replace shirts at Walmart. I am again enjoying wood turning videos and have begun again to get my shirts at higher quality stores. Thank you.

I think part of the burl section did partially detach. I was thinking you'd have cast it in resin. A nice small amount of transparent resin around the burl area to set it in place properly could have done the trick! It turned out well anyway! 😃
Love it!
Wonderful.
Stunning
That's a really interesting Burl, maybe you should name it Milton. That could be a pretty cool base for a lamp perhaps.
Beautiful

Indeed, the defects ultimately provide the beauty...it's why factory furniture is so soulless, because they cull any interesting board with a defect. Thanks for doing traditional gouge work, I've run into too many, even known name, people hacking out shapes with carbide and it irrationally irritates me. 👍 Andy.
So beautiful! I will admit....I was hoping it wouldn't detonate while turning. It proves you are a true master at your craft! J.W. in Massachusetts.

all ways like you work and the skills you have try wood turning ones my self many years a go but the tool i was using ended getting suck in the celling ops LOL :)
Nice 👍💪✌
Andy have you ever tried to create a piece of wood that had a unique burl or defect and you were able to create incorporating that into one of your masterpieces.or just not feasible to do.great video as always.just keep doing your thing and carry on.be safe.😎😎😎👍👍👍
Lovely vase Andy, Phil Anderson said you were worth watching and he was right, now subscribed. Do you ever put voice overs on, as it would be nice to hear which tool, which finish, what wood etc. Just the thought process behind the turning. I too like to rescue wood from the fire. At our local wood yard they discard and chuck on their fire small olive burls and root ends as they dont sell them for firewood (keep going out). I've had some really interesting stuff from them. Looking forward to your back catalogue and next video.

The ugly pieces usually make the best end result.
