ArcDevErik If you looked closely you'll find that though Sonnen was on top position throughout the fight, he was inside Silva's closed guard. Yeah he did open it up from time to time but he always could close the guard and that's being in the most advantageous position from the bottom. And he was throwing heavy strikes from the bottom that made Chael bleed on Anderson. Anderson didn't have a scratch on him. You can be on top but being on top while your opponent on the ground has you in his or her guard is a dangerous place to be. It's neutral territory.

If this isn't evidence enough of Chael purposefully playing an eccentric character in all of his pre-fight banters, I don't know what is. He's one of the most humble and kind-hearted guys in the sport outside of the business aspect of things. Every person I've seen who's met him on the streets or trained with him or had him for a wrestling seminar has nothing but glowing words. He promotes his fights by being bombastic and fuckin' hilarious, that's all there is to it. He gave us one of the most exciting fights in history at UFC 117, and that continues on even to 2018 when I'm writing this comment.

2:57 Chael reflecting on the fight looked like his mask coming off and spilling his heart out, unlike his usual comedic self

Anderson demonstrated love and humility to his opponent, Chael became emotionally disarmed and showed his true heart - Chael too has the heart of a lion. So much respect between them.

Chael Sonnen made a fan out of me. The guy talked big trash against Anderson Silva, and backed up every bit of it, taking Silva to places he's never been. Anderson proved he's still the best in the world by overcoming tremendous adversity and finding a way to win. Definitely one of the greatest UFC fights of all time.

He figured he's up 4 rounds so he gave Silva the 5th and then it goes to the scorecards and he is crowned king. So yeah he is undefeated 👑😎

I love how these two have fought the hell out of each other and today they are friends. How amazing!

I used to hate Sonnen. Today I like him a lot. He was great in this fight.

One of my all time favorite fights in the UFC. Even though he didnt walk away with the prize, people will remember this fight and both their efforts. Chael took this fight to Silva for 4 1/2 rounds like no one had before. Chael owned the entire fight and made Silva be the champion that he is. If there was one thing that ended this fight for Chael, it was when he stunned Silva with that punch in the 5th that almost knocked him out. Chael followed him to the ground and tried to finish him. Had he just tied him up and coasted, Chael would've been the champ, but as we can see, coasted 'aint this man's style.

That punch actually didn't almost knock him out, it actually missed. Silva slipped the punch and then tripped in the process. I agree with the everything else you said.

I dont think he does. He did all the work, carried the fight, wiped the floor with the most imposing fighter....But he made one slip. From bell to bell he had to be perfect for all 5 rounds. Chael was the best fighter in the world for 4 and 3/4 that night.

One of the best fights I've ever seen hands down.

He took a 23 minute ass-whooping against unquestionably his toughest opponent, battled incredible adversity, and still found a way to win. Having said that, Chael Sonnen talked big trash and backed up every bit of it. He proved to the world that he's a force to be reckoned with.

chael sonnen came out of this fight like he got beat for 5 rounds, and Anderson looked almost normal. Even though Anderson was on the bottom of the ground and pound for all rounds, he did a very good job from his back giving sick elbows.

Chael is a Champ in my book! Back in wec when paulo the champ came in overweight and Chael whipped his ass. Also the best sportsman I've ever heard. " the best man wins every time ".

Sonnen really has got the gift to gab. he's got a good sense of humor.

Silva's training includes getting hit in the chin and he turns his head to make the blows less effective. Nearly all of Chael's punches hit Anderson on his lower face. The only usual places people get bruised or cut in at the top of the face. Mostly the eye area and nose.

Oh what a fight!.. man how I wish Chael would have won. It's weird how fate plays its own game. That was the most dominant fight in UFC history practically.. wasn't it?.. let alone against the most dominant champion ever in UFC history. It was a performance that was awe-inspiring. Yet in the last freaking couple minutes, he grabs his arm.. grabs his arm!?!! And the fight's over?. Just unthinkable
