In terms of champions I think Villanova when they were an 8 seed mightve been more remarkable. In terms of just any kind of tournament run, I think both George Mason and VCU were insane tournament runs. Loyola too but its not as if they weren’t Final Four-level talented, they just got massively underseeded while the other teams gave you no reason to suspect their runs

Just another game that goes to show that experience almost always wins in the end. Still, this is where the freshmen hype got too big for UK and even though we rode the storm this season, the seeds were sown for future expectations of discontent within the program. And now look at us 7 years later...this is the last time we were in a championship game. and I doubt we’ll be back any time soon.

@@251to502 what I think is fascinating about these two Connecticut teams though is that like you said, Connecticut in 2014 was ranked in the preseason, struggled to start the year for the most part and then went on to win the championship. A modern blue blood if you ask me. Since 99 (25 years in 2024), Carolina and Duke have three titles, Villanova and Kansas have two, Kentucky only have one (the Anthony Davis led team in 2012, their other recent ones were in 1996 and 98). UCONN won 5 championships and is a serious candidate in '24 again. In a way, they've been like the Spurs in the Duncan era, always a contender despite not being a major market team, but being close to a major market. I know they faced even postseason bans in the period.

Championship games are generally nervous... And here's the thing: on tournament finals you don't play (beautifully, or even your best), you win. That was the order of the day in 2014, that was the order of the day in the last title of the Calhoum era in 2011 (only time I seen a modern game with two teams in the 50 point range or lower)... Anyway, win it. With a show, ugly... Win it
My do I miss these days… I called it the year before, then I called it the year of. I made a lot of money this year & took all bets lol and people don’t remember it, but before the ncaa tournament 1st round huskies had just got BLOWN OUT by louisville & it looked like all hope was lost & like they had nothing to lose going forward.
