UCLA' has a deep bench of players that are contributing while Hawaii is mostly just the starting players. They were gassed out during the 3rd and 4th sets.

Gooch transferring to UCLA was big. Rowan stepping up and playing as true freshman at that level was pretty amazing. He is a lot younger than a lot of players on the court. Knight and Norris played their best matches of the year. When McHenry gets a good set, he is hard to stop. Champlin was solid on reception all night. It was a team win. UCLA didn't have one guy. Hawaii reception put them out of system a lot and they got behind in sets and it hard to come back on a team like UCLA. Hawaii traditionally is excellent at reception but maybe Penn State serving put some doubt in their minds? It was uncharacteristic how they weren't able to receive better.

good point! Penn State totally crashed Hawaii by serving super tough! both are really good team. If we play against penn state, we may lose if they keep serving good

@@locomojoboy2 I don't think you understand how important reception is for the offense to flow, and especially for the setter to be offensive. If you only make a couple good passes every set, the offense becomes predictable and there's not a lot to play from. Thelle did what he could, but what he was given was nothing close to Rowan and UCLA's receiving game. It was awfully obvious... Rowan being in-system the entire game really made his job simple. This was the difference, straight up, as the first comment pointed out.

After seeing the penn state vs Hawaii game, I knew Hawaii won’t get the three peat. The passers were not as precise as the past two years. I think one of the commentator mentioned before that the passing of gage, Colton and Chaz was the key for that 2021 championship. Passing was also good in 2022. I don’t know what happened this year but it seemed that they relied too much on their attacking skills.

@@HomieHopper2070 I agree. They actually mentioned that the game finished super late (Penn State game), and then none of them got to relax, eat breakfast, etc. It was just "go-go-go." I get that it's the life of an athlete, but when it comes to a championship game, I feel like that needs more attention from the coaches and the NCAA--the athletes can't do anything (I should know, I'm a D1 athlete too.) PLUS, my heart just breaks for them because these guys are my home state players--of course, I'm biased, but I do believe that they could've won or have been a lot more precise than they played if they just got to rest, ice, and decompress. To me, this is what's impressive: they didn't complain once and had their hearts in the game; we'll never know what truly happened, but I know the guys, and I know that if they weren't tired, they would've fought for it. I will admit: The UH guys didn't play like they wanted to win. Or at least, that's what it seems like to everyone watching. But... it was a well-deserved game for UCLA and UH. UCLA got their W, and UH can learn and improve.

@@zoechang3 they got a day break in between their match against Penn State to UCLA. I’m pretty sure the NCAA structured the men’s and women’s tournament so that they had a day off in between games 🤷🏻‍♂️ Penn state played a game before they took Hawaii to 5, your argument could be made there as well. I think the single day between games is good enough.

  • @TheTEENTOPfan

@@zoechang3 I think you’re making up excuses already. Wasn’t this the same scenario as last year? Ball state vs Hawaii went to five and finished really late. I think even later than the penn state vs Hawaii this year. Plus they have a day of rest. A full day. Same as last year. In my honest opinion, Hawaii was just over confident. Halfway through the season and you can tell that they are not the Hawaii of last year although all seven starters came back. They took this season like people are just going to give them the championship. Maybe next year wade should schedule tougher. I understand the the logic of playing teams to help them but come on. The amount of unknown and weak teams they played this year was just insulting to UCLA. You have three weak conference Carolinas teams then sfu, long island then the weak teams of big west. The lack of improvement stems from over confidence and weak schedule. I’m not sure if hawaii will be up there next year since they lost thelle and their best out of system hitter in Dimi. Might be a down year next year for Hawaii then a comeback in 2025.

I bet David thanked Knight after the 1st set. David was playing well at first. Then It was 20-20 and David hit two out in a row. Then the ball came right at him and it would have been a difficult dig but possible dig that David was not able to control and Hawaii went up 23-20. UCLA got the next point and Knight was up to serve at 21-23. Knight served a tough serve and UCLA got the point. Hawaii called time out and a big percent of the time players miss their serve out of a time out but Knight nailed an ace to get the game back to 23-23. That changed the entire match.

He is really good (he sets for the Norwegian National Team) and holds a lot of Hawai'i's records. His serve is insane, he's a lefty, he's a phenomenal setter; of course the announcers are going to talk about him. Hawai'i doesn't get this far without him, and it will be interesting to see who they replace him with this season.

Pretty much correct, except “front” is *usually* used to refer to fronting the setter specifically (eg standing in front of a front row setter to block the dump). You would do this if you’re more concerned about the dump than the backrow right side

Then to post in on YT, so that we could compare a visibility of these both types of balls on this specific court colour..

when a kid in the U.S. is super tall and athletic, they're usually pointed towards basketball and football. Because men's volleyball isn't the most popular sport in the U.S., especially at a high school level, there's not a lot of kids who commit for it. But these super tall and athletic young men from other countries where they aren't distracted by basketball and football come to the U.S. so they can play collegiat volleyball at a high level.

I got the opposite from the commentators, that they favored UCLA. They gave Jakob Thelle his just praise, but they also gave David high praise, both deserved. Thelle deserves every accolade given, he is a superior player, the likes that hasn't been seen in a very long time. David has a killer arm, but he is not as well rounded of a player as Thelle is.
