The Interpretation of Dreams (German: Die Traumdeutung) is an 1899 book by Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, in which the author introduces his theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation, and discusses what would later become the theory of the Oedipus complex. Freud revised the book at least eight times and, in the third edition, added an extensive section which treated dream symbolism very literally, following the influence of Wilhelm Stekel. Freud said of this work, "Insight such as this falls to one's lot but once in a lifetime." Dated 1900, the book was first published in an edition of 600 copies, which did not sell out for eight years. The Interpretation of Dreamslater gained in popularity, and seven more editions were published in Freud's lifetime.[2] Because of the book's length and complexity, Freud also wrote an abridged version called On Dreams. The original text is widely regarded as one of Freud's most significant works. While staying at Schloss Bellevue, Freud dreamed his famous dream of 'Irma's injection'.[4] He analyzed the dream as expressing an unconscious wish to be exonerated from his mishandling of the treatment of a patient in 1895.[5] In 1963, Belle Vue manor was demolished, but today a memorial plaque with just that inscription has been erected at the site by the Austrian Sigmund Freud Society.

Interpretation of dream is a work by Sigmund Freud giving a symbolic interpretation of dreams. It's widely complex theme is not understood by common people so freud wrote an another more simpler and equivalent version "on dreams". But the original work is given significant importance now a days. He basically studied mind in terms of consciousness and unconsciousness and kind of action and reaction theory between the two. Critics have argued that Sigmund's theory needs sexual interpretation.

The Interpretation of Dreams Sigmund Freud • "The Interpretation of Dreams" (“Die Traumdeutung” ) was a book written by the famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and published on November 4, 1899. As one of Freud's earliest books, the theories, ideas, and case studies described within "The Interpretation of Dreams" helped set the stage for psychoanalytic theory. • The book introduces Freud’s theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation, and also first discusses what would later become the theory of the Oedipus complex. Freud said of this work, “Insight such as this falls to one’s lot but once in a lifetime.” Besides his later introduced structural model of the human psyche the ‘Interpretation of Dreams’ is widely considered one of Freud’s most important works. • Throughout The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud analyzes his own dreams as examples to prove his new theory of the psychology of dreams. Freud makes a distinction between the "manifest," or surface-level, dream content and the "latent," or unconscious, "dream thoughts" expressed through the special "language" of dreams. • He posits that all dreams represent the fulfillment of a wish on the part of the dreamer and maintains that even anxiety dreams and nightmares are expressions of unconscious desires. Freud explains that the process of "censorship" in dreams causes a "distortion" of the dream content; thus, what appears to be trivial nonsense in a dream, can, through the process of analysis, be shown to express a coherent set of ideas. • The "dream work" is the process by which the mind condenses, distorts, and translates "dream thoughts" into dream content. Freud proposes that the ultimate value of dream analysis may be in revealing the hidden workings of the unconscious mind. • In Freud's view, all dreams are forms of "wish fulfillment" (later in Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Freud would discuss dreams which do not appear to be wish-fulfillment). Freud states: "My presumption that dreams can be interpreted at once puts me in opposition to the ruling theory of dreams and in fact to every theory of dreams...” Sources of dream content:- Freud claimed that every dream has a connection point with an experience of the previous day. Though, the connection may be minor, as the dream content can be selected from any part of the dreamer's life. He described four possible sources of dreams: a) mentally significant experiences represented directly, b) several recent and significant experiences combined into a single unity by the dream, c) one or more recent and significant experiences which are represented in the content by the mention of a contemporary but indifferent experience, and d) an internal significant experience, such as a memory or train of thought, that is invariably represented in the dream by a mention of a recent but indifferent impression.

The Interpretation of Dreams Author - Sigmund freud Published - 4 November 1899 Language - German Translated in English - 1913 The Interpretation of Dreams is an 1899 book by Sigmund Freud, founder of 'psychoanalysis ' in which the author introduces his theory of the unconscious with respect to dream Interpretation, and discuss what would later become the theory of the ' Oedipus complex ' . Freud revised the book at least eight times. Freud reveals in this book: Why comes dreams? How comes dreams? And gives answers in these questions, says Freud : * A dream is seen by Freud as a fulfilment of a suppressed feelings, desire or wish. * Freud stated that "The interpretation of Dreams is the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind". Source of dream content: * Freud claimed that every dream has a connection with pat experience and memories. * The dream content can be selected from any part of the dreamer's life : 1. Significant experience 2. One or more recent and significanct experiences. 3. Strong desire. He considers - As long as conscious mind works in full capacity the repressed thought never comes back. When we sleep ,the ability of conscious mind to repress the desire gets reduced considerably. In such situations unconscious mind successfully slips the repressed desire back to conscious mind, that is called 'parapraxis'. He introduces contents of dreams: 1.The Latent Dreams: is the content of dreams which one forgets. 2. The manifest dreams: is that content of dreams which one remembers. * The raw material / repressed desire in unconscious mind is latent content of dreams. * The manifest content is the distorted image or the dream . He reveals - The dream work : There are two important mechanisms here through which distortion takes place: 1. Displacement 2. Condensation What is displacement? When a worse image is replaced by a softer image in dreams is displacement. What is condensation? It means represting many bad experiences with single bad image. He considers dreams as 'GUARDIANS' of sleep. The book was published in an edition of 600 copies, which did not sell out for eight years. The interpretation of Dreams later gained popularity and seven more editions were published n Freud 's life time. Because of the book 's length and complexity Freud also wrote an abridge version called " on dreams".The original text is widely regarded as one of Freud's most significant work. Freud said of this work: " insight such as this falls to one's lot but once in a lifetime ".
