That high pitch noise is the short circuit protection kicking in so there is a short on the secondary side of the power supply. Had an identical issue with a power brick: 2 of the filtering caps were a bit bulged but the short was from a zener diode. Removed it and power supply started working again (I will eventually get a replacement).
Don't let the haters get to you, Lawrence Systems and Mactelecom Networks wouldn't use their gear if it was oh so "unreliable". Everyone is going to have gear fail, regardless of manufacture. You got years of good use from your old switch and from my understanding, the PSU issue was an issue with 1st gen gear (ones with the button instead of screen). Ubiquity sure beats having to configure your switch with a serial cable like its the 90's.

@@SimpleEnigma331 It depends on the client's needs. I'll probably never install UniFi in any data center. The main question is that do you lose hundreds to thousands of dollars per minute or hour that your network is down because it *NEEDED* a physical reboot. If that reboot doesn't cost much then UniFi is a fully featured product lineup with mostly stable firmware releases. When someone needs 99.9999% or greater uptime under a SLA then I recommend Cisco, Juniper, or Fortinet. Sometimes Dell or HP Procurve depending on the needs. If you want cheap, more complex to manage then Mikrotik makes some interesting hardware, however research the exact model for quirks like a 10 Gig SFP+ switch that can be powered over PoE and use a power supply as a backup power source (it might be vice versa) but that model whatever it was flakes out and you have to reboot it sometimes and or factory reset it and it's not too uncommon for that model. For ultimate performance Intel NIC'x and roll your own OPNSense, PFSense, Sophos, or Untangle.

I had a couple of Ubiquiti US-16-150W switches that I was using for home networking for several years. One of them failed after a disappointingly short period of time. Rather than throw it away I opened it to see if anything obvious was wrong and discovered that it uses a pretty standard off the shelf 48V PSU (I think it's used in the telecoms industry). I was able to find a new one for less than £50 in the UK, it was a plug-and-play swap (even the screw mounting holes lined up, and it's been working fine for 4 years now. The PSU I bought was a "ASP-150-48 153.6W 48V 3.2A Open Frame Power Supply"

Have had power supplies go in several brands of POE switches. AT my last MSP we deployed UNIF to over 60 sites and never had more then an AP fail. We always kept one or two spares around incase of a failure. For the cost you really cant go wrong at 1k for a 48 port POE switch.
Have a lot of unifi gear out there, it does the job well the vast majority of the time. Thanks for the teardown, I have many 16 Poe out there so curious where this leads
Little tip for racking hardware : always start with bottoms screws for the gravity to help you by having the support being pressed upon the structure. If you do the opposite you will have all the weight only on the screw and that can result in bend metal or worse

Power Supply is a common problem with Ubiquiti or UniFi POE switches. The manufacturer will replace the switch under warranty if the warranty is valid. Getting a spare part can be difficult. The manufacturer is trying to sell a new switch, but it does not fix this common problem. One way to fix the problem is to sell power supplies as spare parts and make better quality power supplies. Power supplies from larger and more expensive switches break down in the same way.
Same problem with mine. This issue is normally caused by a bad capacitor on the power supply. You can just replace it (for around $2) and it will be as good as new.

I repaired some of these and the original PSUs are not too good, they get warmer than other PSUs. I always replaced them with Meanwell PSUs, they normally don't fit to the stock position so you need to be a bit creative, but in the end it is colder and works for a longer time.

I think the quality is fine. Nothing is perfect. Things fail and thats okay. I think heat was a contributing factor but may not have been the de-facto killer like I originally assumed.
Do you have a VOM or DVM? Why not look at the voltage coming off the power supply. BTW.. Some PS will have a sense wire that won't turn on the power unless the sense sees a board out there. You see this on computer motherboards. It may not be there for this switch.

Completely out of my skill set lol. But it would be kind of fun to try out.
Meanwell makes a 48V 3.2A power supply that fits in just beautifully. The voltage on it can be turned up to 52V. There's nothing wrong with the Ubiquiti power supply - like Cisco ones they fail after 5-8 years, like most Chinese made stuff. Usually it's just a large capacitor which can be replaced if you can use a soldering iron.
