Ubiquiti Dream Machine Unboxing And Setup

Ғылым және технология

I have never touched Ubiquiti gear until I got hold of this box of random goodies.
There will be other more in depth videos once I get my head around it all and dig deeper.

Fair criticism of all the gear. Glad to see someone looking deeper than my lazy ass would do. I just like how simple it is. Although my family would disagree with all the tinkering I’ve put them through with my unifi gear.

The 4+ years I've had my Dream Machine Pro have been flawless, I'm going to upgrade my old AC-Pro access points to their new U7 's and finally upgrade my G3 cameras to the G5 Range, I recommend Ubiquiti to all of my friends and family

The devices peform their "im here! Adopt me" dance by performing a dns lookup for "unifi". They then send out a hearbeat/ im here, to the inform http (not https) port of 8080 with the result of the "unifi" lookup. Once they have been adopted, they will use the controllers address to phone home. The whole unifi ecosystem used to be really good but has since been dumbed right down so any electrician can install. Its turning into a one click solution. Good luck with ipv6.....

Cant really agree with "dumbed down" being anything bad. Its really the future of networking, as in 98% could be done in a readable GUI. Its consumer grade stuff, smb at most.

One AP can pose as 8 wifi stations. Poe switches for raspberry pi's etc. mine are setup to update themselves every night and i haven't had a problem in 7 years

Our current home system has been a Dream Machine Pro with Ubiquiti access points and cameras and its been fantastic. I currently dual wan connect Starlink and NBN fixed wireless with it as well which has been pretty slick. I have used virtual firewalls with pfsense, sophos UTM and am also familiar with Palo Alto, CiscoASA and others and this for a power user or small/medium business environment is fantastic. Look a bit deeper too, as someone that's also familiar with using linux and having a lower level access its pretty good when you get into it for us too.

Well, I like Ubiquiti but it is not everyone's cup of tea. I was going to say I wish that equipment would fall into my lap, but I don't think I could make use of much other than those access points. I would have fun playing with it though. There are reasons why it works the way it does out of the box (like not letting you choose "password" as a password) but is nicely configurable if you want to work under the hood. Would be great to see a video on what you make of it all.

You've got some good kit there. I run the Ubiquiti WAPs which have been pretty reliable. The controller software is clever and allows the same SSiDs across multiple WAPs. There's a lot of hype around their switches and they seem decent, however it does look like the intended audience is wizard driven. It would be interesting to see if you can do command line configs like Cisco and HP gear. I run my Ubiquiti units with Cisco switches and the Windows controller software (which is java!!).

Never used Ubiquiti stuff myself, but there are a couple of channels on KZread that have mentioned using them (Jeff Geerling / The HookUp) and like you said, it seems to need the Dream Machine and be an all in one management platform for your LAN, access points, cameras (with DVR functionality) and all that. Nice to see one up close and get a better idea of what it's like as a platform - I'm privacy focused like you so, don't need pics of me with my shirt off on the interwebs ;) Based on what I saw I'll be steering clear. Thanks for the heads-up

The mesh roaming works really bloody well and the external wifi access point gives good range. The roaming is better than the shit Cisco setup they have at Monash - but that'll be Monash just not knowing how to configure shit properly.

What's your thoughts on Mikrotik gear, they seem to have some fairly good value for money kit as well, however are still closed source, but ultimately I think it's fairly hard to beat the SoC performance per watt of ARM chips as opposed to full x86 CPU running Linux for routing?

I'm pretty sure the Dream Machine can locally manage the devices with no internet (after initial setup). That's what the "network" software running on it should do. It backs up configs to the cloud by default, but you can disable that feature. Slightly better than Meraki's business model, but still gives me "own nothing" vibes.
