Probably one of the saddest stories I have ever heard. I loved UB40 as a kid and still do. The music is timeless. However these two boys seem hell bent on breaking each other. Maybe when the lawyers are finished screwing them over, and they are broke with their arses hanging out of their pants back in Birmingham, they might realise what is lost and patch things up. I hope they do before it’s too late.

A true fan just knows this. UB40 is a band. UB40 is the band's name. Yes, mr. Ali Campbell has the golden voice, undeniable. He left that band. I love many songs of Ali, but I am still a fan of UB40, and Matt Doyle is the main vocalist of that band now. RIP #Astro #BrainTravers #onelove #oneblood

From what i read from this story is it all went wrong when they noticed they was not getting paid for all the hard work. But they really did have a unique sound and i bet they are still not getting the royalties to this day for the music still being played. Very sad and ironic that the band was created on loyalty and not money and money broke them.

This is very sad as the original UB40 used to be one of my favorite Reggae groups. I always appreciate their contribution to Reggae Music, particularly, bringing the forefathers of Reggae and Rocksteady to pop audiences and ensuring that they received adequate royalties for their hard work. I hope they put their differences aside and get back together someday! RIP, Astro, and Brian!

It’s sad that they don’t like their first few albums because those are hands down my favorites. Outside of that I will add this, no band has ever taken so many of other people’s songs and done what UB40 could do with them, that was make them their own, so much so that they stand up to the original versions. So much so, that I dare to say, they did some of them better than the originals. Get your shit together! Get over your crap and f#cken get the band back together! You can piss and moan when you are dead!

Oh, I didn’t know that. It sucks how it ended. It’s like if you’re in a band you need to hire a personal manager to keep an eye on the band manager 🤷🏼‍♂️ They were a great band and introduced a lot of people to reggae (my mom was one of them, she heard Kingston Town on my HiFi and the next week I found their tape in her car 😃). I’m glad I at least got to see them live once for the Labor of Love tour and would have jumped at the chance if they were still together and came to my city. Thanks for posting this video 🙏🏻

There are many sad stories about brothers in bands - the Knopflers in Dire Straits, the Davies's in the Kinks, the Gallaghers in Oasis, etc. - but this one about Ali and Robin Campbell is the saddest I've heard, as the bitterness just ripped their families apart and they seem unable to reconcile to this day. And they need each other, as UB40 isn't UB40 without Ali's voice, and Ali needs the backup provided by Robin and the others. The drugs and drink through the years certainly didn't help, as they just didn't pay attention to what was going on business-wise!

It's nothing new, everly brother's, simon and garfunkle, fell out on a regular basis, wasn't uncommon for one of the everly brothers to refuse to go on stage during a tour, so one would perform on his own. It goes with the territory, but it's often brushed under the carpet to keep it private, and keep the money rolling in

Breaking the band and the family.. Pretty sad story. The history of the music industry abounds with feuds like these unfortunately. Egos collide, money always comes into the picture then strong bonds are broken and huge falling-outs happen. Sadly this will probably never be resolved because both sides think they're in the right and feel deeply hurt. Too bad because as a band their music was special. Probably the best of its kind.

Its really sad how UB40 have ended up; Ali on his own, Astro and Brian Travers passed on while the band remained fractured. The Robin Campbell-led band is *not* UB40, in my eyes. Obviously, only a fool would believe that everything Ali's said is 100% accurate, and he's probably embellishing parts to make himself look a little better but all along Ali has insisted that there were massive financial discrepancies, and the fact that Robin and the "original" band all declared bankruptcy later, DEP went bust, and the studio was sold off, lends a lot more weight to what Ali's said on that topic. Initially Ali insisted publicly that he had left the band on amicable terms, while James Brown immediately began attacking Ali and badmouthing him (which I remember reading on the forums at the time) and that also lends a fair amount of weight to Ali's side of the story. Anyone who goes straight on the offensive has something to hide, and they're trying to get their story in first. That's basic psychology. There's a James English interview with Ali and Astro, and in it Ali sticks with the exact same statements he's made all along, which Astro backs him on completely. There are also things that Ali alleges the others said at the time, like him asking about money and saying he felt he was being lied to, and Brian Travers replied _"Sometimes you have to be lied to, Ali" _. That would set off alarm bells with anyone! kzread.info/dash/bejne/p4Oso7ZuXcvblMo.html I personally do think that something highly dodgy has gone on with their finances, because UB40 should have been absolutely minted, and I think that members of the band are involved in that. I suspect that Ali did ask about the discrepancies, and that Brian Travers (who was always more involved in the business side, film and live show video productions etc) and James Brown both dismissed him and hoped he would just forget about it. Ultimately, seeing a group of guys who grew up together, started a band and became world famous, now ruined forever is just sad.

There were some extremely dodgy dealings going on with the finances that will likely never be unravelled, and the financial black hole UB40 found itself in is something both sides agree on, but I don't think as a whole they did themselves any favours by sitting back and getting baked while trusting the management to act in their interests. Real questions need to be asked regarding who gave permission for decisions to be made for the band, who ok'd loans against things like their music catalogue for a start, because that is insane! A lawyer had to be given power of attorney to act for the band in order for these decisions to be made, and the band to return from a tour to find they were skint. A forensic accountant needs to be appointed, and it needs to be thoroughly investigated. At the end of the day, UB40 was a company, and if financial impropriety has been committed by officers of the company that is a criminal offence. I think Brian Travers (RIP) possibly knew more than he ever said, and James Brown likely does too. When Ali left his public line in interviews was that the split was amicable, and even went as far as to insist fans were lucky because now they'd be getting music from both acts, whereas Travers and Brown immediately went on the offensive, libelling Ali via their forums and running him and Astro down as "being caught with their hands in the till" (which, if Ali and Mickey's allegations are accurate simply can't be true, because how can you be the thief but asking the management to show you the accounts and where all the money is going?), and thse actions say a lot. People who resort to character assassinations and badmouthing straight away are deflecting, and guilty of a lot more than they are letting on But in regards to the actual split, I don't think Ali left specifically because of the financial business, and here's why: At 36:48 Ali says *_"Because I was asking questions [about the money]....they started to demonise me and I ended up having to leave."_* In the next scene Robin says, *_"that's not what happened...he told us he'd been offered money to do a solo tour...we said "you can't" cos we've got shows, and he said "I'm leaving then""_* Following this Brian Travers confirms it, and says that all of the advances from the US and South American tours that had already been booked, promoted and were being sold had to be returned because when Ali left, those were cancelled, *_"and that money had to go back"_* Ali then denies that he left in order to pursue his own solo endeavours. However, in the James English interview with Astro, at 49 minutes Ali confirms that, because Running Free made no.9 in the album chart he wanted to go out and promote it with a solo tour, and states *_"they wouldn't let me do it, which is when I went sod you then"_* . He elaborates on this, confirming that what Robin and Brian said in this documentary about his reasons for leaving were true. Also, if you pause the video and look at the screenshot of Ali's resignation letter, the end paragraph seems to state that his "tour dates are booked and can't be changed", again reinforcing the fact that Ali booked a tour slap bang in the middle of one that UB40 had already booked! Contradictions like this from Ali don't really do him any favours, to be honest. If UB40 had a tour booked and Ali walked in and refused to do it because he wanted to do a solo tour then that's not right, and both sides have essentially said that's the case. But I think Ali's discontent began with the money situation, in his eyes refusing him permission to go and tour compounded this discontent, and it was the final straw.

@@jackiesmith3684 He did indeed, and that's why I think Brian Travers knew _something_ about these loans that were agreed against the band's assets, though exactly what that is he's likely taken to the grave, unless there's paperwork. Also, whether Brian meant "you" as in Ali in particular, or the royal "you", we'll never know the context but to even say something like to a band member who is confronting you about suspected financial impropriety just smacks of suspicious behaviour, for me anyway. Their behaviour towards Astro when he left is also why I suspect that James Brown knows something; he was far too quick to publicly crucify Astro, and accuse him of stealing on the band's messageboards, which to me reeks strongly of Brown hoping to get his story out and his digs in before anything else came out publicly. I think the timeline of the split was: Ali began asking questions about the financial situation in 2004, brought in Bill Curbishley that year to investigate more thoroughly and support his enquiries with the band, and they didn't get anywhere with the band or the current management. The "musical decisions" he was talking about being made that he didn't agree with were most likely having Dan Sprigg and Brian's son Jamie mix the album Twentyfourseven, as well as allowing them to work on recording the "uninspired" album Dub Sessions that Ali specifically mentions in his resignation letter. After getting nowhere with his inquiries about the financial position, Ali carried on touring and recording with UB40, appearing on the studio albums "Who You Fighting For?" and "Twentyfourseven". He released Running Free in 2007 and on seeing its success, decided to capitalise on it (like anyone would). But the other 7 in UB40, who were still essentially living hand-to-mouth as a business entity, had already booked a tour and wouldn't allow it _(which from a business point of view is understandable, because you don't want to put the public in the position of having to choose an act to buy tickets for, you're essentially competing against yourself, and they were trying to keep UB40 afloat as a viable business)_ , and this refusal was the final straw for Ali.

That was a completely different scenario; it was a money-grab move by Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger when they quit The Beat and formed General Public, though towards the end of the 80's, Roger met and made up with Andy Cox and David Steele - who were then in Fine Young Cannibals - and apologised for his part in the break-up of the band by going along with Wakeling, given he was the baby of the group and had just become a father.

After nearly 30 hours of flying and layovers, plus the time difference and travelling distance to my home town, I arrived home on the Wednesday midday. Totally feasible for Ali to have not been able to get home in time. Flights to the UK even these days can take up to 36 hours due to layovers.

Astro had told UB40's management in the months leading up to his departure that he wasn't happy and didn't want to feature on promotional material for the tour until things had been resolved.
