    The benchmark for modern day tours/shows. People will always hate on U2 due to their opinions on Bono but this really was the greatest show on earth, the biggest, best most stimulating live show of them all. What a band, in their absolute prime here

    Agreed. Aside from Queen and maybe Pink Floyd, there was never another live band as good as they were during their peak. As good as these videos are, they don’t do it justice. The only thing I would quibble with you is about why the public feels the way they do about the band. I definitely think a part of it is the politics. But not as much as people think. I think its as much (if not more) to do about public exhaustion of how long and consistently they’ve been around with zero breaks/ departures. I view the public exhaustion as the opposite dynamic of what happens when artists/politicians/musicians/actors die when they’re young. Kurt Cobain. Janis Joplin. Jimi Hendrix. Jim Morrison. James Dean. JFK. RFK.. They’re frozen in time at the top of their game. When they die young at their peak, their legend inevitably outgrows their reality.. James Dean was only ever in 3 movies JFK was reeling from scandal after scandal RFK might not even have been the Dem nominee when he was killed. Let alone POTUS. But nobody really remembers that now. The flipside of that is every human being in the world witnessed the 4 guys in U2 ascend to the highest possible peak of musical/cultural/artistic/performative relevance.. and the world has now witnessed those 4 guys in U2 descend from that musical/cultural/artistic/performative relevance. Had they died in a plane crash in 1994, no one would really care about their politics. So there’s no doubt in my mind they would be almost unanimously considered on a Mt Rushmore of musicians/cultural icons. Ok I’ll stop talking now. I did not enter this intending to talk to your ear off✌️

    Michael Kelly their 2017 Joshua Tee 30 tour can't compare with Zoo TV, this was groundbreaking in so many ways. U2 has never reached the heights of this tour again. I was talking to a couple who went to ZooTV, and then took their kids to JT30, and they said the kids have no reference point as to what they missed. If you weren't there in 92-93, you really missed out on one of the greatest shows in rock history (I made it to the Boston show on St.Patricks Day 1992, show just blew me away)

    I've read interviews where Edge said this song was unwieldy to play live. I don't understand why. It sounds incredible and should be the centre piece of every show. To me this song IS Achtung Baby. It's stunning, absolutely stunning. U2 transcend genres, the are U2.

  • @alexandriaocasio-smollett5078

    @alexandriaocasio-smollett5078

    Жыл бұрын

    I’ve read that as well. Just like how they never played red Hill mining town live until their second Joshua tree tour in 2017, So Cruel off Achtung Baby is the biggest example that. They’ve never played that song live because they haven’t figured out how to yet. It’s going to be interesting in their Vegas residency to see how they construct that song to play it live before. It’s a top 10 U2 song for me of all time. I can’t wait to hear it. I think the reason why is because there’s so much layering and texturing that can be difficult to capture live without it sounding like a train wreck because unless the timing is perfect, the whole thing unravels quickly. As an aside, it was right around the time of that interview you’re talking about were they came out and said that when they’re writing their songs, they keep in mind that it’s important to structure them in a way to be able to play it in its album form *and* as a stripped down live form. Even going acoustic at certain times. I believe a lot of that is artistic. But I also think a lot of it is managing it because it can be unwieldy live..

    I saw U2 live in 1992 at Earls Court, London. I bought a bootleg tape of the concert shortly after and played the live version of Ultraviolet over and over and over again. I could never tire of it.There's something about the desperation and defiance in the vocal which is equally both very moving and uplifting. The song shouldn't reach the heights it does in many ways. I mean, can a love song really have the word 'baby' in it 40 odd times?! And yet it soars, with the guitar pattern building as only U2 really know how to do, encompassing every emotion of falling in and out of love, pain, joy, confusion, emptiness. It's just one of the great love songs for me...

I was recently watching the U2 360 at the Rose Bowl concert on Blu-ray and came across their amazing performance of this song from Achtung Baby. I only heard Ultraviolet at the end of January of this year. I had never heard it before. As a long time U2 lover and having said that U2 is my fav band of all time for many years, I was surprised to find this phenomenal song. I don't think it was an accident though. From above I'm sure. It comforted me greatly and still does. Why? Because my second son died from the terrible disease of Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy on January 30 of this year. I have played this song over and over again several times since. Why does it appeal to me so much? I'm not sure. If anyone is reading this, please tell me what it means to you. Maybe I'll get a glimpse into why it means so much to me. Thanks, Tim

    The Zoo TV tour was U2 at their absolute best. Bono doesn't have the same vocal as he did back then but there are moments where he can still hit amazing notes. The part at the bridge for Ultraviolet is what made me amazed in Bono's voice. I've had both a love and disappointing relationship with U2, but they will always be the most influential band I have ever loved in my life. To me, they are the best band because no other band has moved me more times in my life than U2.

    For me, Zoo TV completely changed everything, with regards to what could be achieved at stadium sized gigs. It was high tec, high concept and the Album it was touring ( Achtung Baby) was on another level. This was a band in their absolute prime, they were untouchable during this period. I don't think gigs have changed so much over the years, regardless of who the band is.....we have, the audience have. Instead of enjoying the moment and losing yourself to the music and the experience of watching a live band, we all just stand there watching it through our phones, as we record it. Very sad, I miss the old days and the songs and gigs of my youth.

    Amazing performance. When Bono screams at 0:30 his scream is perfectly in tune with the synthesizer sound in the background. That just shows how inventive and a fantastic singer he was back then.

    I love Bono's angst as he yells into the phone and @ 4:10 when he acts like a televangelist receiving the spirit, shaking and movin about to receive a blessin'. Or how about at 2:10 when he sings like a demon/angel. These two songs represent mankind's ability in creation..

    I think that this performance, of these two songs, would be representative of humans ability at music, IMHO. Clearly Bono, well the band also, are at the peak of their creativity, ambition, and drive. Zootv should be rated as one of the best tours ever.

    U2 have been with me since I was a boy growing up-they've weathered all those years and have been a source of strength when I had none. If I could say thank you I would, but I know I'd be in a very long line of people. It's being there with them at the concerts that makes the difference, feeling the atmosphere, knowing everyone standing with you feel the emotions of the lyrics & chords and that at some point they've switched off to everything else & just ramped the volume up. Thank you boys.

    Matt Wall Dude I know exactly what you're talking about, As i was contemplating jumping off a Bridge in Tijuana Mex. in 01' The Song Beautiful Day was Playing very Loud on a Red Jeep that was Passing By,, ,that Song reminded me that once Bono at an earlier Interview Explained that the Song was about A man that had lost Everything he had to live for but it was A Beautiful Day! that Night the Song at that Moment Saved My Life,, i was Able to cry for the first time in many Years....that Night i was able to leave all that i couldn't leave behind. I Cried like A baby, I was jumping into nothing at all,,, im Glad that I had that Album I remember getting home and playing that CD all night ,Bono & U2 thought me that One Night, that what I was Just Stuck in a painful Moment of my life and , that the Moment had passed .

    These concerts, in mid to late August 1992, had a fantastic acoustic set - immense and unplugged. These songs in the last 1/3 of the show were larger than life, and delivered that way. They fookin' shook the Earth with that music. Aye, it was just U2 being U2.
