It’s funny, I’m almost the same age as you and started playing guitar around the same time as you as well. Edge was the first guitarist I was into but I completely understand how someone could have the perspective that his playing is minimal and uses effects and thereby see that as a bad thing. Much respect to you for coming around to appreciate his playing. I could learn from your experience I think.

U2 is Bono and The Edge together it couldn't work any other way. The Edge is a genius. You cannot discredit him and say he uses too many effects bc effects are created to be used just as a guitar is. I dont know if The Edge creates his sound along with a technician but the sound along with his melodies and solos are like where the bar is set on how to use a guitar with effects and not over or under do it. I'd bet anything that it's not true. And no I'm not a musician anymore haven't played in a few years but I live in Hollywood and worked on mini docs covering tons of people in the recording/production industry as well as young artists in a ton of genres. I see a lot of the "are you a guitarist?" "how many records have you sold" arguments and they really don't hold a lot of weight. Believe it or nt they did have a guitarist who played it like Led Zeppelin, Rolling stones but his style wasn't comparable with either Edge or Bono's styles. Look fr Street Mission or the Fool on here to hear what it sounded like. It would havre ruined I Will Follow or 11 O'clock tick tock.

This is one of the greatest sounds and songs in rock in the past 30 years. A true innovator who threw away the rule book and the constraints of the guitar stereotypes - a watercolor of sound that gives U2 that something special. As a guitar player who can play Fade to Black as easily as this (and a lover of all lead guitar schools) this man and his contibutions to the rock and roll and guitar are right up there. Esge we salute you.

He has a unique guitar sound (although he has 100 different effects). He wrote and recorded lots of songs and albums that are classics in pop and rock - and his guitar sound (and bono's voice) are the marks that made U2 one of the most successful bands in the 80s and 90s. What the hell gives all these dumb assholes the right to say that he can not play guitar. He is not Satriani or Vai, he is not Knopfler or Gilmour, he is not Bonamassa or Beck, nor Clapton, Cale or Gibbons. He is The Edge - someone who deserves respect for his effective playing. That's it, you hobby guitarists and members of the music police

Edge has written some of the most iconic, riff-laden, memorable guitar licks in the history of rock. I'm a guitar snob, and I think he's a total badass. He deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as Clapton, Page, Hendrix....because he's that good. Take those classic U2 songs he played in this clip, and put your run-of-the-mill barre chords on them that most guitarists would schlep, and they become forgettable accompaniment to Bono's singing.

While I've always been an Edge fan and have found the fashionability of slating him as some kind of technically limited hack as little more than odious bullshit (ESPECIALLY when discussing this movie), it's only recently that I've begun to realise just how good he actually is. I recently got a guitar teacher and one of the first things he's made me do is to learn how to play slowly and cleanly, exposing the value and colour of every selected note and restraining yourself from whizzy frills, and I can tell you that it is actually HARDER to pull off than the traditional ideas on 'virtuosity' and 'shredding' just don't try telling that to the Jimmy Page fanboys

Slowly and cleanly is fine. But the guitar has a range of emotions that require both 'slow' and 'fast' playing...the Edge is definitely lacking one...and I love how ones with this lack of versatility lean on the 'slow playing is more soulful argument'. Yeah, I believe it when it comes from the mouth of a guitarist that can do both, but you have to be suspicious of a guitarist that can't play fast dissing fast playing.

krelbar Not sure which one you think he is lacking? The Edge is skilled at just about everything. Punk music "Exit", solo's "Bullet the blue sky" "The Fly" I could go on and on. He doesn't fit what most guitar stereotypes are and thats a good thing because frankly speaking when the world was rocking to 80s hairbands The Edge was doing something far more interesting. A good example would be Van Halens 5150 and The Joshua Tree came out about the same time. The Joshua Tree is considered a classic rock album....5150, not so much. ....wait a minute how can that be? I mean Eddie just played like a million more frantically cool notes on that album then the Edge did on the Joshua Tree. The Edge out classed him.
