When this album came out I listened to it over and over for at least a year straight. It was and still is (in my opinion) U2’s magnum opus. One of those albums that you know every sound of, every word, the singer’s every breath in and every breath out of, every beat, every count. This song in particular is beautiful!

On January 23, 2019 I listened to this song and "Bad" from the Unforgettable Fire CD at work. The tears flowed freely and I wondered why I had such a reaction of all days. My beautiful daughter struggled with heroin addiction for almost 10 years and perished from that addiction sometime in the evening of the 22nd or early on the 23rd. My wife told me when I got home from work. I felt my daughter was speaking to me through this. I miss you so much Bryna Leigh. I am raising her 2 year old son now. Grampy's favorite band. Ayden will know them too....

Strangely, I think most of us (Irish people) would say we're not really U2 fans, but we still pack wherever they play to the rafters! It could be the RDS, Slane, or Croker; I've seen then at each. Never paid for a ticket, but they've been some of the best gigs I've ever been to. I too think this is their greatest song by a very long way. Something magic and spiritual happens in this song. Something I cannot explain. I'd love to know what was happening in Bono’s life when he wrote this.

And so she woke up Woke up from where she was lyin' still Said I gotta do something About where we're going Step on a steam train Step out of the driving rain, maybe Run from the darkness in the night Singing ah, ah la la la de day Ah la la la de day Ah la la la de day Sweet the sin Bitter the taste in my mouth I see seven towers But I only see one way out You gotta cry without weeping, talk without speaking Scream without raising your voice You know I took the poison from the poison stream Then I floated out of here, singing Ah la la la de day Ah la la la de day Ah la la la de day She runs through the streets With her eyes painted red Under a black belly of cloud in the rain In through a doorway She brings me white golden pearls Stolen from the sea She is ragin', she is raging And the storm blows up in her eyes She will suffer the needle chill She's running to stand still

This is the last song on Joshua Tree. I could listen to this every day for the rest of my short life. Hardly ever hear this on the radio but when I do, I close my eyes and remember the young Swiss man I feel in love with at that time. He became my addiction. I felt high. I moved away from my husband. Got a divorce. Then my Swiss man left to follow his dreams. What an amazing low for me. I was never the same! But this song with it's chords and melody and simplicity worked their way into my fingers on a piano and voice to sing the hurt away. Thank you U2!

It has helped me get through rough times ,and it says alot running to stand still means your running to find a peace of harmony from your past bad experiences. Its a deep and thoughtful song. One of there best, ever recorded. Thank you bono.

The first U2's songs, so deeply impressive, this one sounds like a sweet ballad. There's common people's life, such a variety of feelings. Bono's voice is really superb (but don't forget Morten Harket, the A-ha singer, another style, of course, my best two singers). True music and true singers.

He was a big influence on me and since he was in the Navy I grew up and decided to join the Marines. When I graduated from basic training I learned that he overdosed when I was in training. It broke my heart that I couldn’t see him as a Marine. I miss you man. To everyone struggling with addiction, I pray for you. I hope you have the strength to overcome it

I used to work as a volunteer with homeless people and a lot of them were heroin addicted. I knew this guy who I definetely knew was addicted and I was really frustrated because I knew his potential and I knew how damn hard he was wasting his life. One day we were talking about something and he was giving me bullshit and I said "Just stop, you remind me of a song (the guy used to play the guitar, as a matter of fact he carried his guitar everywhere; probably one of the few things he possessed)". And I told him about this song. He tried to know what was this song about and I just told him to just find the song and listen to it. The next day I didn't find him on the streets, neither on the next day. I didn't see him for like 9 months, I thought that he died from an overdose or something. And then he calls me (he didn't have a cellphone before, although sometimes he called me from payphones). He listened to the song and got really moved by it and I guess it was like a click he made back then. He decided to move from Lisbon to the south of Portugal so he wouldn't be around the same people as he was used to. He played the guitar for the tourists in Algarve (Portugal) and one day he was hired to play in a bar. And after that he returned to Lisbon where he managed to get a job also in a bar, playing for the customers. And as I know he is clean now, has a girlfriend he is going to marry and I just hope that the addiction is history. So, this song just reminds me how sometimes we have these moments when magic can really happen. This song for me is magical.

+chinafakeeggs There is "some" good music out there, just that what's put on the radio is absolute garbage, your Katy Perry and what not are the life suckers of music. But try giving one of the artists I mentioned a listen, I suggest Mindy Smith, the albums "One Moment More" , "Long Island Shores" are really nice albums. She's sort of country/singer/song writer/contemporary adult pop, but very stripped down and down to earth.

I was a 14 year old lad in the north of England and I heard this song. I wasn't a massive U2 fan, I generally left that to my brother. Not sure why when i heard this song it touched me so much. I wrote the full verses and chorus in the back of my Religious Education ( compulsory English education at the time ) work book. A few weeks later our RE teacher pulled me to one side and said 'Gareth, did you write them words in the back of your book? They are beautiful' I was young but I think my heart told me if my teacher was so pleased about thinking it could be me then I couldn't shatter her illusion that the next English poet was coming from Preston, England in the school she was teaching...
