    Probably the biggest band in the world at the end of the 80s and into the 90s, then again in the early 2000s, and one of the massive bands of all time. They were commercial in that they sold, but they didn't follow a formula...as soon as they had something they had done to its end, they switched styles. And U2 is the OPPOSITE of her commercial definition...U2 was always about the message as much as the music.

    I don't know if U2 was ever really about the message. If you think of all their biggest & best tunes: Out of Control.. Day Without Me.. I Will Follow.. Electric Co... Gloria... Sunday... New Year's... Surrender... 40... Homecoming... Pride... Unforgettable Fire... Bad... Streets... Without You... Still Haven't Found... One Tree Hill... Desire... Angel... All I Want... One... Real Thing... Wild Horses... Mysterious... Beautiful Day... Vertigo... I'm not saying there wasn't meaning to Bono's lyrics, but who really gave a damn what he was singing about? For me, it was always more about the vibe. Their songs always had an uplifting power and majesty to them that picked you up & swept you along.. Bono sang with such conviction... Belting out big anthemic choruses with beautiful guitar flourishes from The Edge like an artist splashing paint on a canvas... It was a mood they created. Tapping into some universal spirit and singing hymns to a higher power in the church of rock. I realise that sounds pretty wanky, but I don't know how else to describe. It was a feeling they captured as a band that made you feel like the music they made was the most important thing ever.

    @Carl Marks that developed as Bono's lyric writing developed. Though War is nothing but a message album, from the known Sunday, Bloody Sunday, and New Year's Day to Like a Song, which is very much a personal manifesto, to Seconds, to a literal Psalm to end...

Finally saw them on Zoo TV, have seen every tour since, sometimes (often) multiple shows, and I can best describe it as "church". I am always completely taken by them live. It's become fun to hate on U2, and I get it...they were the big band. But they didn't chase it...popular music came to them.

    A lot of U2 songs have a meaning/purpose that just don't reveal themselves from a casual listen (not all of their songs). In the late 80s and 90s, U2 was a hugely popular band ... named "Rock's Hottest Ticket" by Time magazine in the 80s. People kept calling them "Pop", so the band made an album and marketed as a joke as Pop music. From there, every says they sold out and became commercial. I think the reason why you guys always have a difficult time to finger and categorize their music, is because every 2-4 albums, they reinvent their sound and make something new.

    U2 has been around since the 80s and had many different sounds. Their albums The Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby have very different sounds, all great. I think people call them commercial simply because they didn’t keep the same sound year after year. I too have loved many shows and love the band, but I've never heard or read anyone describe U2 as Nu-Wave. Those were bands like Devo, Depeche Mode, with a lot of synthesizer and often electronic drums. About as close as that got to U2 would be maybe The Cars, which was near the border between the two. But I believe the majority of people would see U2 as just rock from that era, done in U2's style.

    They were lumped in with the "new wave" that eventually was called college rock (CMJ top 40), like The Police, REM, etc. There was the new wave of MTV, the british pop stuff, but the early 80s alt bands often got stuck with the "new wave" label...it wasn 't punk, or rawk, so it wad the new wave. Alt/college rock terms eventually covered it

  • @s.mcpherson6354

    @@dougman23 College Rock I have heard applied to U2, The Police and REM. And I know some people call everything after punk 'new wave.' But at the time, the fans were often quite distinct, and were often served by completely different radio stations where the rock stations often poked fun at stations tilted toward new wave. The people who liked U2 often liked The Stones, but they were rarely into Devo or Depeche Mode. And the reverse was often true too. The latter was more ironic, and about social commentary, so it attracted more of us arty people, whereas the rock bands held the traditional blue jean let's party and rock audience. There was a lot of overlap too (like me), but otherwise the audiences for each were pretty distinct cliques in most high schools. I did like how 'new wave' took punk's rebel attitude but made it more absurdist and fun. That seemed to change more minds than Punk's anger.

  • @GayJayU26

    @GayJayU26

    2 жыл бұрын

    I’m from the U.K. and the scene here at the time was not quite the same. They were lumped with new wave over here as the New Wave of Rock coming out of the Punk scene. Too much music sadly these days has to be defined by genre and people limit their listening only when they can define the genre. We didn’t categorise so strictly and so there was room for experimentation. Groups could just offer something unique, and not feel they had to conform. We never had a genre given the name Alt College, but there were certainly many bands that college and uni students preferred. Sticking to stifling genres restricts anything new and exciting. Dee is right, but defining genre can prevent breakouts and crossover talent.

  • @s.mcpherson6354

    @s.mcpherson6354

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@GayJayU26 Yes, agreed, people seem less rigid before in that we didn't need to define absolutely everything and then have to agree on its value. Queen could have songs that sounded wildly different and that was fine--very few thought anyone was supposed to be consistent as an artist. Both artists and art lovers were freer to value what they did and allow others to do likewise, regardless of genre. And if people disagreed, most people just accepted that and got on with life. All this said, this music versus music feels like it did start to happen when rock started battling disco. But even most of that was started by radio stations trying to attract attention, it wasn't some idea people were worried about otherwise. It was just two different audiences. But now everyone's a judge, constantly comparing everything. And everyone feels the need to align with some label. It's like nothing exists anymore, tings only exist in relation to their tension with other things. No wonder younger people are so much more stressed than previous generations. There's a lot of ways to be wrong today.

    This song is always connected to a specific moment in time for me. I used to walk to my aunt's house for breakfast because I didn't have a job and I didn't want to sleep in all the time. I wanted to force myself to be normal. So this one morning I was walking down and the sky was so crystal blue that I started singing this song and twirling around down the street. Then like an hour later while we were watching the Today Show they cut away because a plane flew into the World Trade Center. So it's messed up that this is what I had in my head before that happened. I'd been a U2 fan for almost 20 years at that point. They were huge since the early 80s. The song encourages us to focus on the good in life. “It’s a beautiful day/ Don’t let it get away… Touch me, take me to that other place/ Teach me, I know I’m not a hopeless case.” Bono also introduces images of hope. One that is particularly noteworthy is that of “the bird with a leaf in her mouth” followed by “after the flood all the colors came out.” This is referring to the time when God destroyed the earth by flood. When Noah sent out a dove and it returned with a leaf in its mouth, he knew there was dry ground and new life. God gave the rainbow as a sign that he would never again destroy the entire earth with a flood. (Genesis 8-9). Hence the rainbow, as God intended, is a sign of hope and regeneration.

    U2 are a commercial band in 3 major areas 1) They have always cared about being popular and always wanted to be big 2) They are smart business people and do not deny or try to shy away from or put up false pretend of their art not being commerce 3) They are massively popular and sell millions. While less so in terms of record sales, they lead in terms of concert ticket sales (sometimes in profit as well, however, they do NOT charge as much as their contemporaries who don't even sell as well or quickly in terms of concert tickets) Ironically, they have always managed to remain outside of their contemporaries in rock/modern rock/alternative. In the 80s modern rock/college was heavy into synthezed sound of British New Wave with US bands following suite. While a small handful of bands like U2 remained firmly in more traditional band instruments, but with a sound that was not the standard R&B based rock music, nor disco, nor prog rock. In the early 90s bands were returned to basic bare bones in grunge and alternative (grunge is merely a subset of alternative), while U2 had already been there done that, that gone further in that sound and even aesthetic - see the hobo-minimal western look from Unforgettable Fire and peaking in Joshua Tree and Rattle & Hum. U2, during this type released an album completely doing a 180, heavily European influenced, along with hip hop influence in rhythm, baggy, and industrial. While they were atmospheric, spacial and minimal in the 80s, during the rise of Grunge and Alt Rock U2's sound was dance and dance influenced all throughout the decade, in stark contrast not only to their own history, but to the current wave of modern rock which they were a part of. Then in early 2000s rock was starting to add more dance and industrial and euro flavor - See Killers, Muse, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs etc. U2 did another turn, stripping down, but this time drawing more influence from singer songwriter/poprock vibe. Songs that sounded like, and were very much 4 guys in a room together... Guess what types of bands started to come on the rise in the next wave of rock?

    "Gone Commercial" or "Sell out" generally refers to when artists change from producing what they really believe in to producing what is known that a large un-critical crowd will be pleased by. When artists loose their way or loose their soul. I like earlier U2, when the band members were more idealistic and had something to say and felt that they still had things to prove...that they belong on a top shelve of world stage music. Having said that, this (newer) song hits it out of the ball park, it has vibe, it has grit, a wonderful uplifting message, not afraid to express religious tones in the lyrics and singer Bono back in top shape delivering great vocals, the whole album is great and in a similar theme, it is no surprise that this was a huge hit for U2.

    Their 80s output was often great, then took it to a whole new Level with first the Joshua Tree, then made a turn from a more new wave to an industrial tinged alternative rock that was hard at times and soft and introspective in others, I would not classify them as commercial though they have had great commercial success. From their classic and ground breaking Achtung Bzby, try End of the World, The Fly, One and Mysterious Ways. This band was a awesome spectacle of a show both times I saw them and they are one of the best rock bands ever. Enjoy! 🎵

    U2 is an amazing Irish rock band with many hits in the eighties, nineties, and 2000s! All rock is not the same! They have a lot of haters calling them a commercial band! They have very deep lyrics in most of their songs, such as, Pride; In the Name Of Love (which was about MLK Jr.), Where The Streets Have No Name, Bloody Sunday (about an actual civil uprising In Ireland), With or Without You, and many more! Bono, the lead singer, is known for his amazing vocals and his activism! ❤️❤️

    Toe commercial band refers to bands that tend to make music the advertisers can buy to sell products. That being said I'll never forget their halftime show performance in the first Super Bowl after 9/11. It was also Tom Bradys first SB win. The halftime show featured this song as well as a very emotional tribute to those who died on 9/11. That earned my respect.
