I have won with French radio 3 days with u2 in studio in Dublin, in 1997. I'm bassist, and the only thing I can say, when you look Larry plays drums on u2 songs it's very different when he plays alone. I saw him playing some very technical parts and at very high speed! Like clayton, when he plays alone, he is technical and very good in slapping! So there is a big difference when they played for shows and alone. Not the same musicians! But for their songs they want no technical aspects to be very confortable about arrangements! It's the reason why u2 songs are very powerful in live conditions.

Check this out - Larry here uses the Yamaha Piccolo snare SD-493, and it sounds awesome, not as a usual Piccolo snare (which is high pitched and "squeaky") - I would love to know which heads were used to make it sound so great and "Rockish" :-) I read somewhere that this drum is considered the best Piccolo snare ever made, due to its versatility ... so true (and, I'm lucky to have one, and will be happier once I know what Larry used to make it sound so great !!!)
@Samueldonovan2007

a lot of it also has to do with what the sound engineer did to his snare back then. They used a lot of compression to give it the sound it had. It had to have been. Piccolo snares cant sound that way on there own I dont think...could be wrong. but thats just my opinion.
@thomasstone411

Tomer Dichterman hi with your snare you need to tune the ten tension lugs to mid level. The usual snare heads that it came equipped with can produce the rock sound. But make sure you tune the tension lugs appropriately. Btw, Larry Mullen Jr is the greatest rock drummer of all time.
@TomDichter
9 жыл бұрын
Thomas Stone Thanks for the tips - For that snare, I use the Remo Emperor X Coated Batter - which is a very Rocky drum head, and really works great when tuned low - so this really helped me get a more lower tune with more volume... thanks again for the info about that :-)
